(Cl. 229-38) This invention relates to a blank for erecting a cardboard box in the form of a parallelepiped having end tabs glued together for forming the end walls of the box. In boxes of this type it is often important to have the end tabs and the side walls of the box cooperate for obtaining a box as tight as possible. The object of the invention is to provide simple means for obtaining an elfective seal of a box of this kind cOrnprising two opposite side walls having end tabs and a bottom having end tabs which together with the end tabs of the side walls form a continuous wing flap at each end of opposite edges of the box blank, wherein each of the end tabs of the bottom has two triangular side panels located one on each side of an intermediate triangular panel bounded by two fold lines each of which extends at an angle of 45 to the longitudinal direction of the end tab of the bottom and the intersectional point of which lies at the edge of the end tab of the bottom, and wherein the width of the end tab of one side wall and the width of the end tab of the bottom are substantially equal to half the width of the bottom, whereas the end tab of the other side wall is wider and overlaps the narrower end wall and is attached thereto by means of an adhesive stripe. In such a box, especially if used for deep-frozen products, there is a certain risk of the contents of the box leaking out through the narrow passage located at the apex of the intermediate panel between the opposing edges of the side panels and extending out through the gap between the intermediate panels and the side panels folded thereover. In accordance with the invention this narrow passage is obstructed by the provision of an adhesive stripe on the walls and end tabs of the box or on the blank for making the box as indicated in the appending claims.
Two suitable embodiments of a box and blank according to the invention are exemplified in the annexed drawmgs.
FIG. 1 illustrates an embodiment of the blank according to the invention, FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the blank in FIG. 1 in a position to facilitate understanding the way how the adhesive stripe will seal the narrow pas- "sage at the apex of the intermediate panel, FIG. 3 is a perspective view of an intermediate position during erection of the box immediately before the intermediate panel and the side panels of the bottom are folded in wards toward each other and the wide end tab is turned over the narrow end tab, FIG. 4 is a diagrammatic broken perspective view of the box as viewed from the bottom and illustrates the outside of one end wall and the inside of the other end wall of the box, FIG. 5 shows another embodiment of the blank according to the invention, FIG. 6 is a diagrammatic perspective view of the blank according to FIG. 5 in a partially erected position similar to FIG. 2, and FIG. 7 is an end view of the box from the blank in FIG. 5 shown in a view similar to FIG. 3.
By means of longitudinal and transverse fold lines 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, 6, respectively, the substantially rectangular blank is subdivided into panels corresponding to the bottom 7 and two opposite side walls 8, 9 of the box to be made. The longitudinal edges of the side walls have wing flaps 10, 11 which together are to form the closure or cover of the box. The end walls of the box are formed by end tabs 12, 13, 14 in the form of extensions of the :bottom and the side walls at the end edges thereof. In the following description reference will be had only at the end tabs for forming one end wall of the box, the other end wall being identically formed.
As will be seen from FIG. 1, the end tabs 12, 13, 14 form a continuous wing flap along one end of the blank. The end tab 13 of the bottom is foldable about the fold lines 2, 3 relative to the end tabs \12, 14 of the side walls, the last-named end tabs being foldable relative to the side walls along the fold line 5. Further the end tab 13 of the bottom is divided, by means of two fold lines 15, 16, into three triangular panels 17, 18, 19, said fold lines making an angle of 45 with the longitudinal direction of the bottom.
The end tab 14 of one side wall 9 is of the same width as the end tab 13 of the bottom 7. The Width of the end tab 13 is equal to half the length of this tab 13, i.e. equal to half the width of the bottom 7.
The end tab 12 of the other side wall 8 is wider and preferably of the same width as the bottom 7 so that this end tab 12 will cover the whole end side of the box.
A comparatively wide and thick adhesive stripe is indicated by a full, thick line. The adhesive stripe is preferably of a glue that adheres upon heating. This adhesive stripe consists of two substantially straight and parallel, but transversely offset portions 20, 21 and an intermediate portion 22. The portion 20 extends along the major part of the length of the end tab 12 to .a point 23 where it merges into the oblique intermediate portion 22 which at the end tab of the bottom joins the end 24 of the second straight portion 21 which extends across the end tab 13 of the bottom. The distance between the straight portion 20 of the adhesive stripe on the wide end. tab 12 and the fold line 5 of the end tab is greater than the width of the narrow end tab '14 so that during erection of the box the wide end tab 12 can be glued to the outside of the narrow end tab 14, as will be seen from FIGS. 2 and 4.
It will be seen from the figures that the other straight portion 21 of the adhesive stripe on the end tab 13 is located near the free edge of this end tab and extends across the triangular side panels 18, 19 and across the intermediate panel 17 near the apex thereof.
The oblique intermediate portion 22 of the adhesive stripe is located such that during erection of the box the apex of the intermediate panel 17 will come into contact with said portion 22 of the adhesive stripe, as will be clearly seen from FIG. 2. And as a result a gap, if any, between the opposing edges of the side panels 18, 19 at the apex of the intermediate panel and in the region around this apex will be filled up so as to provide an effective seal of the leaking passage in consideration at the apex of the intermediate panel. The gluing of the side panel contributes to this sealing effect. This is due to the fact that the portions 25, 26 of the adhesive stripe which are applied to the side panels 18, 19 are utilized to attach these side panels to the insides of the end tabs, as will be seen from FIGS. 2 to 4. The portions 25, 26 provide a sealing glued connection along each edge of the side panels to the region around the apex of the intermediate panel where the adhesive stripes are pressed against the end tabs 12, 14 and flow slightly out laterally and cooperate with the portion 22 of the adhesive stripe which also is slightly forced out laterally so as to form a practically completely tight closure.
The configuration of the blank shown in FIG. 5 is somewhat modified as to the end closure formed by the tabs 28, 29, 30 and 31. This end closure is sealed by means of short adhesive stripes 32 at the ends of the tab 28.
For the sake of simplicity, details of the blank in FIG. 5 identical with details of the blank in FIG. 1 are denoted 3 by the addition of an a, such as the bottom 7a, side walls 8a, 9a, end tabs 12a, 13a, 14a and fold lines 111, 2a, 3a, 4a, a, 6a 15a, 16a, triangular panels 17a, 18a, 19a. Further, the portions 21a of the adhesive stripe extending along the free edge of the end tab 13a of the bottom 7a is also identical with the portion 21 in FIG. 1.
The difference between the adhesive stripes in FIGS. 1 and 5 is that in FIG. 1 the stripe is composed of two straight and parallel portions 20, 21 interconnected by the oblique intermediate portion 22 ending at the point 23, whereas the adhesive stripe in FIG. 5 is composed of three straight and parallel portions, namely the first portion 2111, a second portion 33 located substantially on a line in the extension of the free edge of the end tabs 13a and 14a, and a third portion 34 which corresponds to portion in FIG. 1 but is located somewhat closer to the free edge of tab 12a. These portions are interconnected by intermediate portions 35 and 36.
As will be understood from FIGS. 5 to 7, the portion 33 will be located so that it completely fills any possible gap between the free edges 37, 38 of the triangular panels 18a, 1911 (FIG. 7) along their whole length to the apex of the triangular panel 17a. Accordingly, the inner and outer end points 39 and 40, respectively, of the portion 33 are so located that point 39 will lie close to the free end edge of end tab 12a and point 40 (in FIG. 5) has a position which substantially corresponds to point 23 in FIG. 1.
Both in FIG. 1 and FIG. 5, the adhesive stripes are applied to the blanks by means of conventional glue applying wheel. The adhesive stripes 34, 36, 33, 35, 21a and 32 are applied at the same station, and at the next station the box is erected and filled with its content. In the meantime the adhesive stripes 32 have cooled, but are readily reheated at the final station where the tabs 28, 29, and 31 are closed and sealed.
In order to facilitate a high feeding speed it is also possible to have the intermediate portions and 36 equally long so that the portions 21a, 33 and 34 are equally ofiset relative each other. In this case the portion 34 will have substantially the same position as in FIG. 1, that is close to the free edge of the end tab 14a in the erected box. However, the end tab 12a may then be provided with a second adhesive stripe (not shown) running near the free longitudinal edge of end tab 12a between its free end edge and the fold line 1a.
What I claim is:
1. A blank for making a cardboard box in the form of a parallelepiped comprising two opposite side walls having end tabs and a bottom having end tabs which together with the end tabs of the side walls from a continuous wing flap at each end of opposite edges of the box blank, wherein each of the end tabs of the bottom has two triangular side panels located one on each side of an intermediate triangular panel bounded by two fold lines each of which extends at an angle of 45 to the longitudinal direction of the end tab of the bottom and the intersectional point of which lies at the edge of the end tab of the bottom, and wherein the width of the end tab of one side wall and the width of the end tab of the bottom are substantially equal to half the width of the bottom, whereas the end tab of the other side wall is Wider and is provided with an adhesive stripe for gluing together the end tabs of said side walls whereby to form the end walls of the box during erection thereof, characterized in that the adhesive stripe on the Wide end tab extends over the end tab of the bottom and that said stripe on the wide end tab passes through a point thereon located such that during erection of the box the apex of the intermediate triangular panel comes into contact with said point whereby to have adhesive fill up a gap, it any, between the opposing free edges of the side panels at and in the proximity of the apex of the intermediate triangular panel.
2. A blank as defined in claim 1, in which the adhesive stripe comprises three straight and parallel portions interconnected by oblique portions to provide a continuous stripe, the first portion extending along the free edge of the end tab of the bottom, the second portion being located substantially on a line forming an extension of the free edge of the end tab of the bottom, and the third portion being offset relative to the second portion to form the adhesive connection between the end tabs of the side walls.

Claims (1)

1. A BLANK FOR MAKING A CARDBOARD BOX IN THE FORM OF A PARALLELEPIPED COMPRISING TWO OPPOSITE SIDE WALLS HAVING END TABS AND A BOTTOM HAVING END TABS WHICH TOGETHER WITH THE END TABS OF THE SIDE WALLS FROM A CONTINUOUS WING FLAP AT EACH END OF OPPOSITE EDGES OF THE BOX BLANK, WHEREIN EACH OF THE END TABS OF THE BOTTOM HAS TWO TRIANGULAR SIDE PANELS LOCATED ONE ON EACH SIDE OF AN INTERMEDIATE TRIANGULAR PANEL BOUNDED BY TWO FOLD LINES EACH OF WHICH EXTENDS AT AN ANGLE OF 45* TO THE LONGITUDINAL DIRECTION OF THE END TAB OF THE BOTTOM AND THE INTERSECTIONAL POINT OF WHICH LIES AT THE EDGE OF THE END TAB OF THE BOTTOM, AND WHEREIN THE WIDTH OF THE END TAB OF ONE SIDE WALL AND THE WIDTH OF THE END TAB OF THE BOTTOM ARE SUBSTANTIALLY EQUAL TO HALF THE WIDTH OF THE BOTTOM, WHEREAS THE END TAB OF THE OTHER SIDE WALL IS WIDER AND IS PROVIDED WITH AN ADHESIVE STRIPE FOR GLUING TOGETHER THE END TABS OF SAID SIDE WALLS WHEREBY TO FORM THE END WALLS OF THE BOX DURING ERECTION THEREOF, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT THE ADHESIVE STRIPE ON THE WIDE END TAB EXTENDS OVER THE END TAB OF THE BOTTOM AND THAT SAID STRIPE ON THE WIDE END TAB PASSES THROUGH A POINT THEREON LOCATED SUCH THAT DURING ERECTION OF THE BOX THE APEX OF THE INTERMEDIATE TRIANGULAR PANEL COMES INTO CONTACT WITH SAID POINT WHEREBY TO HAVE ADHESIVE FILL UP A GAP, IF ANY, BETWEEN THE OPPOSING FREE EDGES OF THE SIDE PANELS AT AND IN THE PROXIMITY OF THE APEX OF THE INTERMEDIATE TRIANGULAR PANEL.
