STORM-COLLAR FOR OVERCOATS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,230, dated December 15, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, LOUIS M. BROOK and MAGNUS WIENER. both citizens of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Storm-Collars for Overcoats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

Our invention relates to storm-collars for garments, such as coats and overcoats, and has for its object the provision of an independent detachable collar which is readily applicable to'the garments by means of buttons or otherwise, and which shall when set in place cover both the inside and outside of the permanent collar, thus protecting it from becoming soiled when turned up against the neck of the wearer.

The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of that side of the collar which is exposed to view when turned up around the neck. Fig. 21's a reverse view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a garment with the collar applied.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures where they occur.

A is the side of the collar which is upon the exterior and is exposed to view when the same is turned up around the neck of the wearer. A is the reverse side, which lies next to the neck of the wearer. This side A is narrower than side A, as shown in Fig. 2, and is disconnected therefrom along the base, as shown, but united along the ends and across the top. This construction makes a pocket in the collar,into which the permanent collar of the coat is placed when the storm-collar is in use, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3. tects it from the weather as well as from being soiled by the neck.

The outer thickness, A, of the collar is provided with button-holes or analogous fastening means along its lower edge, as shown, to engage with buttons on the garment.

When not in use, the storm-collar may be removed or turned down to form a cape and the permanent collar turned over it.

We are aware that detachable collars have been made with two pieces disunited along one side, and with button-holes on both sides, and with both sides of substantially equal width, and we do not claim such, for our collar, being made with one side, A, narrower than the other, A, and with the button-holes in the edge of the wider side only, we are enabled to button the collar upon the coat on the exterior and place the coatcollar in the pocket between the sides at any time, and to turn the said detachable collar down with the coatcollar over it, and have only one thickness of goods in the detachable collar where it turns over, thereby making a neat and thin bend over which the coat-collar is to be turned.

WVhat we desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is A storm-collar for coats, consisting of the side A, having button-holes or analogous fastening means, and the side A, secured to the side A along the top edge and ends, but free and disconnected therefrom along the base or lower edge, and of sufficiently shorter Width along this edge to enable the collar to be turned down with only the one thickness at the bend, and to be placed over the permanent collar, in the manner set forth.
