UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrcE.
DANIEL A. CARTER, OF CAMDEN, NE JERSEY.
CHILDS NURSERY-COMMODE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,866, dated December 8, 1385.
Application filed July 3, 1885. :Scrlnl No. 170, 586. (Kb model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL A. CARTER, of
Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Nursery- Commodes; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in chihlrens nu rsery-connnodes.
hen a child is too young to be placed in a bath-tub, the mother or nurse commonly washes the child while lying in her lap. The articles which furnish a childs toilet are liable to become scattered, and the mother or nurse is required to leave her chair to find t-hem,or,having them collected in a basket, to bend down to get them. This arrangement is hard for both mother and chi1d,tiring the one and causing the other to become impatient and frctful.
The object of my present invention is to provide a combined wash-stand, toilet, and commode, which shall be adapted to support a basin and the articles commonly employed in furnishing a child s toilet, at a convenient height for the mother or nurse while in a sitting posture, and to further provide a convenient support for a childs chamber, and means for holding the child thereon.
A further object is to provide a support for the several articles mentioned, and for a slopbuckct, towel-rack, and articles of dress, which shall be compact, convenient, and present a neat appearance when not in use.
WVith these ends in view my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the commode as it appears when closed and not in use. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same with the covers opened. Fig. 3 shows the chamber drawn out in position for use, with the supporting bar or strap adjusted to hold the child on the chamber; and Fig. 4 is a vertical sect-ion showing the location of the slop bucket, wash-basin, and chamber when the commode is closed.
A represents the frame-work of the comframe-work A,immediatel y beneath the covers\ C, a tray,D,is located. The front central portion of the tray is provided with a washbasin, at, about four inches deep and twelve inches in diameter. Arranged around the basin in convenient order are the compartments E F G H,for the reception of soap, puffbox, comb and brush, pins and wash-rag. The bottom of the basin (Z is provided with a wastepipe leading over or into a slop-bucket, I, located in the rear lower portion of the commode. Doors i,of any approved construction, either on the back or on the rear portions of the sides, are adapted to open and admit of removing or adjusting the bucket I. In the lower front portion of the commode is a drawer, K, which extends rearwardly about one-half the depth of the frame A, and is sufficiently deep to hold a childs chamber, the rim of which should be on a level, or nearly so, with the front edge of the drawer. To the front of the drawer two uprights, 7c, are secured, far enough apart to admit the body of the child freely between them. Side rails, L, are socured at their front ends to the tops of the uprights It, and extend through sockets Z in the front of the casing a, rearwardly beneath the tray D. As the drawer K is drawn out, the rails L slide out and form side rests to hold the child in position.
A band, M, is removably secured to the side rails in such a position as to prevent the child from pitching forwardly. The means for securing the band M to the rails may consist of snap-hooks on the band, adapted to engage eyes in the rails, or any other approved means may be employed.
The right and left front corners are provided with rearwardly-extending sockets m,in which rods or bars .N are secured in sliding adjustment, to serve, when drawn out, as towel-racks.
ICO
The drawer K is preferably inclosed in a tight box fitting closely about it.
The spacewithin frame A and casing a not occupied by the fittings heretofore described is adapted to receive towels, wash-rags, diapers, pitchers for hot and cold water, bay-rum bottle, &c., and may either be partitioned off to accommodate them,or n0t,as found expedient.
The childs nursery. commode thus constructed may be either portable or stationary. If used in connection with a house water-supply, the waste-pipe from the basin may lead to the drain-pipe, and the hot and cold water be led to the upper edge of the basin, as is usual in city wash-stands.
Having fully described 'my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A childs nursery-commode consisting, essentially, of a main frame provided in its upper portion with a wash'basin, and a series of compartments for toilet articles, a pair of doors hinged to the top of the frame and forming a cover for the basin and compartments, and adapted, when open,to form tables, a pair of doors or wings opening from the sides of the main frame and forming supports for the doors when the latter are in open adjustment, a drawer located in the lower portion of the frame and adapted to hold a childs chamber, uprights secured to the front of the drawer, and side rails secured to the uprights and having a sliding movement in the frame, substantially as set forth.
2. In a childs nursery-commode, the combination, with the main frame and easing, of a drawer adapted to hold a childs chamber, uprights secured to the front of the drawer, and side rails secured to the uprights and having a sliding movement in the casing, for the purpose substantially as set forth.
3. In a childs nursery-commode, the combination, with the main frame and casing and a sliding compartment adapted to hold a childs chamber, of the uprights, the side rails, and the front strap, for the purpose substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL A. CARTER.
