CUTTER-HEAD FOR HEEL-TRINIMINGMACl-HNES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,771, dated December 8, 1885.

.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. Conserv, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Rotary Cutters for HeelfIrimminO Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full andexact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication.
Myiuventiou relates to the rotary cutter in a heel-trimming machine by which the heels of boots and shoes are exteriorly shaped, and has for its object to provide for a ready adjustment ofthe treadguard or tread-rest to cutters of different widths and the prevention of injury to the boot or shoe by reason of its contact with said tread-guard.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an adjustable cutter-holder and cutter fitted with my improved treadguard, and Fig. 2 a central longitudinal section of the same.
A represents the central rotating spindle or hub ofthe cutter. The enlarged inner end of the spindle is formed with an interiorlythreaded socket, b, by means of which it is attached to the operatingshaft of a heel-trininiing machine. Its opposite end is formed with a threaded central recess, c, to receive the central bolt or stud, D, upon which the counter-guard F is tted. The couuterguard F is by preference mounted upon a sleeve, e, so as to be free to rotate loosely thereon.
The cutter B is preferably made up of a series of disks or plates armed with a series of blades projecting each at an inclination to a radial line, and each so grooved at its outer end as that the periphery of the cutter shall have a molded or curved l'orrn longitudinally, (see Fig. 1,) the counterpart or reverse of the curve which it is desired to give to the heel laterally.
Grepresents the beveled-edge circular disk or radial flange, which is formed or tted at the inner end of the spindle A to constitute the treadguard or top-piece rest, which serves to prevent the action of the cutter upon the heel fromforciug the tread-lift outward.
The cutting-disks of the cutter, when fitted upon the spindle A, are usually confined thereon between the fixed tread-guard G and the counter-guard F by screwing up the stud or bolt D into its seat c, so that its head shall carry and force the inner end of the sleeve e against the cutter.
In my invention this guard G, constructed, as usual, in the form of a circular disk, is mounted to revolve loosely upon a collar, i, formed upon the inner end of a sleeve, K, adapted to encircle and screw upon the enlarged inner end of the spindle A, this end of the spindle being eXteriorly threaded for the purpose, asillustrated in Fig. 2. Theinner end of the collare' bears against the cutter, so that the tread-guard G may not be bound thereby,
and the guard is thus left entirely free to revolve after the cutter is iXed upon the hub or spindle A, the cutter being confined between the collar 'i at one end and the sleeve e at the other by the operation of the bolt D, as described.
The free rotary movement of the tread guard or rest G effect-nelly prevents the injury which oftentimes results from the Contact of the treadsurace or top piece of the heel with the ordinary fixed gear, especially when the heel is wet or damp. By turning the sleeve K upon its threaded seat the collar i may be adjusted to and from the opposite sleeve e, (see dotted lines in Fig. 2,) so that cutters of different lengths may be fitted upon the same hub or spindle,` A, thereby avoiding the necessity of changing the cutter-head for different sizes or descriptions of heels.
Vhile it is preferable that the guard G shall be made detachable and left free to revolve, it is not essential, and I contemplate the use ofthe adjustable sleeve K as a device for confining the cutters in position upon the spindle A in whatever manner the guard may be cornbined or connected therewith.
I claim as my invention- The combination, in a heel-trimming Inachine, with its cutter-spindle, the tread-guard at its inner end, the cutter-guard at its outer end, and means, substantially7 as described, for securing the counter-guard upon the spindle, of an internally-threaded sleeve screwing upon the inner end of the spindle, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
