CARL A. CARRICK, OF MARKER, MICHIGAN.
REVOLVING DIVIDER FOR MO'WIlIG-MACHINES.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL A. CARRIOK, a citizen cf the United States, residing at lllarkey, in the county of Roscommon, State of h lichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revolving Dividers for MowingMachines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable other skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same- This invention relates to revolving dividers for mowing machines and has for an object to provide a novel hinge connection for attaching the divider to the finger bar shoe, this connection preventing rocking downward of the divider below a predetermined angle relatively to the shoe, but per mitting of the divider rocking freely upward to rise over obstruct-ions.
With the above object in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts herein after fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification :F igure 1 is a plan view of the improved rotary divider attached to a mowing machine finger bar. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig.3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 33 Fig. 2. Fig. a is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4-4 Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 55 Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of several parts of the hinge. Fig. 7 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a portion of the rotary divider, parts being shown in elevation.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates the shoe of a finger bar 11, the shoe being formed with a vertical slot 12 in which a ground wheel 13 is revolubly mounted, and further being formed in rear of this slot with a vertical slot 14.
The revolving divider comprises a cen tral shaft 15 provided at one end with a securing eye 16 and a plurality of longitudinal wires 17 the inner ends of which are inserted through a washer 18 carried on the shaft and clamped thereto by nuts 19 threaded on to each wire and bearing against the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 31, 1912.
Patented Oct. 6, 1914. Serial No. 728,905.
V-shaped recesses 23 which receive the heads 1 l of the wires. The disks and washers together with the wires are all turned on the shaft in a direction opposite to the standing grain by frictional contact of the wires with the standing grain.
For attaching the rotary divider to the shoe a bolt 24: is passed horizontally through the slot 14 in the shoe and is held stationary in any adjusted the slot by means of a lock washer 25 which is provided on both faces with serrations 26 and 27 the serrations 26 on the inner face engaging with corresponding serrations 28 on the shoe, and the serrations 27 on the outer face engaging in corresponding serrations 29 on the opposing face of the flange 30 carried by a tube 31 which is fixedly mounted on the bolt 24: and is clamped against the washer by means of the retaining nut 32 on the bolt- The tube flange is provided on one side with a lug 33 the purpose of which will presently be explained.
A tubular bearing 34 is revolubly mounted on the tube 31 and is provided on one side with a lug 35 through which and the securing eye 16 of the shaft 15 a bolt 36 is passed to secure the divider to the bearing 34, the latter as above stated being adapted to rotate on the tube 31 and thus permit of the divider rocking in a vertical plane. A retaining washer 37 is held on the bolt 24 by means of the retaining nut thereof and bears against the tubular bearing to retain the latter in place.
For limiting the rocking movement of the bearing, the latter is provided on the top face with a lug 38 which extends in a plane at substantially a right angle to the lug 35 of the bearing and is adapted to contact with the above mentioned lug 33 on the tube flange 30, and limit rocking movement of the divider which as is clear is fixed to the bearing, below a predetermined angle relatively to the shoe, while at the same time the divider may rock upwardly freely to clear obstructions such as stones, stumps and the like, since the bearing rotates in a forward direction during upward rocking movement of the divider and the lug 38 of position longitudinally of the bearing moves forward out of contact with the hip; 33 of the tube. a
For permitting of the divider being adjusted laterally the lug is equipped yvitli serrations 39 and a serrated Washer 40 is fitted on the square bolt 36 and engages the I serrations 39. A Washer 41 is fitted on the bolt 86 between the nut 42 thereof and the securing eye 16 of the divider shaft. By loosening the nut the serrated Washer i0 may be disengaged from the serrations 39 and permit of the bolt being rotated to set the divider at any desired angle.
What is claimed, is
The combination With a sickle bar shoe having a vertical slot therein and having one side face roughened on the side edges of; said slot, of a pivot pin engaged through; said slot, a Washer non-rotatably mountedl on said pivot pin and having a roughened face engaging with the roughened edge portions oi said slot for adjustably anchoring said pivot pin in said slot, a sleeve nonro-tatably mounted on said pivot pin and having a roughened portion engaging With a roughened face of said Washer, a revolublehub on said sleeve, means for retaining said hub in place, stops carried by said sleeve and said hub for limiting rotation of said hub in both directions, and a divider carried by said hub.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
