ESPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,703, dated December 1, 1885.

Be it known that we, PETER GRATER and JACOB SEIBEL, citizens of the United States, residing at Napoleon, in the county of Henry and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Straw-Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Our invention relates to an improvement in endless belts, adapted particularly for useas straw-carriers on thrashing'machines, the object being to so construct the sections composing the belt that the same may be readily connected or disconnected, and yet be held securely against accidental detachment.

A further object of the invention is to pro vide the sections or links composing the belt with thimbles or sleeves for the reception of the ends of the connecting-slats, and to provide said thimbles or sleeves with slots adapted to receive pins projecting from the slats, whereby the sections or links in passing over pulleys will be allowed to fleX, and without any strain to the different parts of the belt.

\Vith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

Each of the sides of the sections is composed of a series of sections or links, D, which comprise in their body a rectangular open frame, having at one end a hook, E, which is adapted to engage the end of the adjacent section. The hook is engaged with the end of the adjacent section by engaging the hook therewith from one side thereof, a notch being provided-on the upper and under sides of the hook at one corner thereof, as shown at a. they cannot possibly be accidentally disconnected, forthe reason that the slats hold the sides against lateral movement,while the opening communicating with the hook is slightly smaller than the cross-bar or end of the frame.

Projecting inwardly from the inner side of the frame D is an extension, F, upon the upper side of which is arranged a thimble or sleeve, G. Fitting in this thimble or sleeve is the end of one of the transverse slats connecting the sections. An elongated slot, 12, is made in the thimble, and projecting upwardly from the slat is a headed pin, 0, which works in said The slat is loosely fitted in the thimble, and when the beltwhich, as before stated, is endless-passes over pulleys, it will be seen that the slats will work in the slots, and thus prevent any undue strain or wrenching of the parts.

The improvements before described are simple in their construction, may be manufactured and supplied at slight cost, are strong and durable, and thoroughly efficient for the purposes intended.

Having thus described our invention, we

- claim- 1. A straw-carrier composed of two sides, each comprising a series of flexible connected sections, each section having a hook at one end and an inwardly-extending thimble having aslot, and slats fitting in the thimbles, and having projecting pins engaging the slots in said thimbles, as set forth.

2. A straw-earrier composed of two sides, each comprising a series of flexible connected sections, each section having a hook at one end and a notch at its other end, extensions projecting inwardly from the inner sides of each section, thimbles on the extensions, said thimbles having slots, slats connecting the sides and having their inner ends engaging the thimbles, and pins in said slats engaging the slots in the thimbles, as set forth.
