ADJUSTABLE REST FOR BOOKS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,563, dated December 1, 1885.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. SIPE, of Monterey, in the county of Highland and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Rests for Books; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and useit, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improveinentin adjustable rests to be used by book-keepers and others who have entries to make in ledgers or other large books; and it consists in the combination of the desk or table, the rest, which has a shank provided with teeth, an operating lever, and the spring actuated device for engaging with the teeth to hold the rest in position while the elevatinglever is being moved to take another hold, as will be more fully described hereinafter.

The object of my invention is to provide a rest for b0ok-keepers which can be raised to any desired height, so as to form an even extension at the bottom of the ledger or other book in which the entries are being made, and thus enable the person to write as well and as easily at the bottom of the page as at any other point.

Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of different forms of my invention. Fig. 3 is a perspective of a jointed operating-lever.

A represents a table or desk, which has an opening through it at any desired point, and down through which the toothed shank B of the rest 0 passes. The rest 0 will be of any desired size or shape that may be preferred, and is intended to form a support for the hand and wrist, so as to enable the book-keeper or other person making entries in the book to write as well and as easily at the bottom of the page as at the top. If so desired, there may be a suitable recess or depression made in the top of the desk or table, so that when the rest is not in use it will sink into the table or desk so as to be just flush with its top, and thus not be in the way at any time. The teeth upon the shank are preferably made of the shape shown, so that the jointed lever G, which is pivoted through the side of the table or upon the table at any suitable point, will engage with one of the J teeth and raise the rest upward a suitable dis- 5 5 tance, and then slide downward over the teeth,

so as to get another hold. This lever is made jointed at its inner end, and the end is provided with a spring, a. for the purpose of returning the jointed end piece, 6, to position as rapidly as it slips from one tooth to the other.

In connection with this jointed lever G is used an endwise-moving rod, I, which passes horizontally through the side of the table, and is provided with the spring-actuated pivoted 6 end piece, d. This rod 1, when pushed inward so that its end d comes in contact with the ratchetteeth, serves to support the hand rest 0 at any desired elevation after it has been raised by operating lever G. This support ingrod I may be held forced inward by means of a spring, i, like the lever G, or left entirely free to be operated by hand. When the rest 0 is to be lowered, this rod I is drawn outward by hand, and then it will not interfere with the downward movement of the ratchetbar B. In case it is not desired to raise the rest O by means of a lever,the rest will be pro vided with a ring or other similar device, N, by means of which the rest can be raised and lowered by hand. Where the ring N is used, a lever, M, which is held pressed inward by means of a spring, t, supports the rest in any desired position, when the rest is lowered so as to be flush with the top of the table, as 8 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination of the table having an opening through its top, the rest provided with a toothed shank, an operating-lever for raising the rest, and a support for holding the rest in any desired position, substantially as described.
