UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE,
GEORGE WASHINGTON HU'IGHINS, OF NEWBURYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM C. PLUMMER, OF SAME PLACE.
KEY-RING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 331,301, dated December 1, 1885. Application filed August 3, 1885. Serial No. 173,344. (Il'o model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HUTOHINS, of Newburyport, in the county of Essex, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Key- Rings;- and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing,
which is a side View of a key-ring of my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claim hereinafter presented.
The body A of the ring is a bow of horseshoe form, having connected integrally with it at its ends or heels two converging inturned free ends or prongs, B, that extend therefrom within the opening of the bow at an acute angle to each other, and butt or nearly butt together at or near their ends without being there in any way connected, and forming a converging opening, which facilitates expansion of the bow by a key when forced between them so as to press them' apart. By introducing the annular handle of a key down between and beyond the prongs, so as to cause such handle to enter the space within the ring, such handle may be coupled to or engaged with the ring, so by turning it over between the prongs and drawing it downward the key may be disengaged from the ring.
I do not claim a key-ring having a contracted loop to support a key, and opposite thereto an inward bend having in one side of it an opening, and lapped to open by contracting the ring, and to prevent expansion of the ring, all being as represented in the United States Patent No. 196,418, for my key-ring does not open by contracting it or pressing it together, but only by pressing its heels apart, and it has no laps or devices to prevent expansion of it.
I claim- An improved key-ring,consisting of a body or loop, A, having inturned free ends, which abut or nearly abut Within the open portion of the body or loop, and provide a converging opening between such inturned portions for the introduction of a key, substantially as shown and described.
GEORGE WASHINGTO) HUTCHINS.
