CHECK STAMP.
Patented Nov. 24, 1885.
I f 1 v NITED STATES ATENI FFICE CHECK-STAM P.
:fiPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 331,227, dated November 24, 1885.
Application filed July 2, 1885. Serial No. 170,501. (N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAM. W. BUZARD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jamesport, in the county of Daviess and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Stamps, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in implements for stamping bank-checks or documents, so that figures or marks may be indented or impressed upon the paper; and to this end my invention consists in an implement having pivoted jaws and handles, the ends of said jaws being bifurcated and carrying between them disks, one of said disks having attached thereto dies for operating upon the material to be stamped, the disks being provided with ratchet-wheels, which are rotated in opposite directions by means of spring-pawls, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a side view of my improvement, showing the pawls partially broken away and in sections. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view, the handles being broken away.
A A represent handles of the stamp, which are pivoted to each other at a, said handles being held apart by a spring in the usual manner. The jaws B B are bifurcated at their ends, so as to provide openings, between which are pivoted disks 0 G. The disk 0 is provided with a series of projecting dies, 0, said dies being preferably the numerals, and the opposite disk, 0, is preferably copper or other comparatively softmetal, and forms the surface against which the dies operate. Each of the disks 0 C have rigidly attached to one side of the same ratchet-wheels D D, the ratchets of which are turned in opposite directions, so that when said wheels are rotated by their pawls they will turn in opposite directions, or away from each other. Between the bifurcated portions of the jaws are secured spring-pawls E E, the outer ends of said pawls being notched, as shown at 6, so as to engage with the ratchet-teeth of the wheels D. These pawls are held against ratchetwheels by springs f, which bear against the inner sides of the jaws B. The jaws B B are secured to each other, so as to limit their outward play by means of a bar G, which is pivotally secured to one of the jaws at one of its ends, while its opposite end is provided with a slot, through which passes the pivot-pin g.
The operation of my invention is as fol-- lows: When the jaws are brought together, one of the jaws of the dies which projects from the disk 0 will bear upon the paper, so as to hold the same against the opposite disk, 0, and when the handles are pressed together the impression will be imparted to the paper, and when the handles are allowed to open each of the disks will'be rotated or turned the space of one ratchet, thus bringing a new figure or emblem in position, and a further outward movement then to accomplish this object is prevented by means of the bar G.
The device hereinbefore described forms a handy implement for bank use for impressing figures to indicate value upon checks or drafts, and the proper figures will be readily brought into position by simply bringing the handles of the jaws together.
I claim 1. In a device orimplement for forming impressions in or upon papers, the disks provided with ratchet-wheels and pivotally secured, so as to be capable of a rotary motion between the bifurcated jaws, and spring-pawls for engaging with the ratchet-wheels, so as to cause the disks to move in unison, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device for forming impressions upon paper or similar substances, the jaws B B, pivotally connected to each other and provided with handles, which are normally held apart from each other by aspring, the outward movement of the jaws being limited by the slotted bar G, which is pivotally connected to one of the jaws, and passes over a pin attached to the opposite jaw, in combination with the disks 0 0, provided with ratchet-wheels D D and spring-pawls, the parts being organized substantially as shown, and for the purpose Set forth. and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a device for makingimpressions upon In testimony whereof I affix my signature paper, the bifurcated jaws B B, pivotally sel in presence of two witnesses. cured to each other, and the disk 0, having dies 1 V SAM. W. BUZARD. projecting therefrom, in combination with the W'itnesses: opposite disk, the ratchet-wheels D D,attached H. BUNKER, to the disks, and a spring-pawl which engages JAMES GUINN.
with said ratchet, so as to cause the said disks :0 to rotate in unison, substantially as shown,
