Description

j aura sata f anni* didn,
GOTTLIEB ROST, OF UNION HILL, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, XVILLIAM AUSTIN, JR.,.AND JOI-IN JUNGERMANN, OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVEMENT IN` HAND-STAMPS.
The schedule referred te in these Lettere Patent ena making peut ef'tne seme.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gommnrnn Ros'r, of 'Union Hill, in the county of Hudson and State of New J ersey, have invented a new and improved Canceling- Stamp; and I do hereby declare that-the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make andf use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specication.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction and arrangement of self-inking and revolving hand-canceling stamps, for stamping letters, bills, notes, and the like; and
It consists in the improved construction and arrangement hereinafter described.
Figure l is a side elevation, with some of the parts vsectioned Figure 2 is an elevation perpendicular to iig. l, and
also partly sectioned i Figure 3 is also a sectional elevation; and
Figure 4 is a face view'of one of the stamps.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A double-headed lettered stamp, A, and a plain double-headed stamp, B, are mounted at the center transversely on the shaft C, which is journaled at each end in the end ot'a sliding piston-rod, D, which rods workin tubes E attached one to each end 11 of the T-headed stock, of which G is the handle, so as -to be parallel with each other and the handle, in
which tubes above the piston-rods are spiral `springs H,'which force themdowuward when the stamp is raised.
Between the stamps A'and B the shaft O is prol vided with radial projections N, at opposite points, and above theni'a hooked paw), O, is jointed to the part F of the stock, and provided with a spring, P, which keeps the pawl, which has a long curved end, @projecting beyond the hook, bearing against the projections on the shaft C.
The part E of the stock constitutes the ink-reservoir, which is filled through the tubular part R of l the handle .into which the part G screws, and at the under side of the part F are two hiking-pads, S, coinciding with the ends of the stamps, and either let into the bottomv flush with thesurface, or slightly projecti'ng therefrom, through which the ink with which they are in contact at the inside flows slowly, to be imparted to' the faces of the stamps when forced up against the pass.
The lettered stamp carries three detachable dies, a b al, which indicate respectively the month, day, andr the hour of the day.
The instrument being held in the hand and the lower ends violently struck upon the letter or other article to be stamped, (the latter preferably laying .ou a soft bed,) the impressions required -will be imparted by the blow, and 'at the same time the uppermost ends will be forced vup against the inking-pads, the springs being forced back by the pistons D.
At the same time, also, the hook of the pawl O-will be forced below the end of' the lower projection 'N and will engage it, so that as soon as the instrument is raised, which should be done quickly, the springs H, forcing the pistons out ofthe tubes, and the pawl holding the projection N, the shaft O and the stamps will be turned a half revolution, while the iattened end I of the shaft is passing through the wide part M of the slot in b'ar K, and then the said part I, dropping into the narrow part Lat the lower end, will hold the stamps against turning too far, and lock them in the required vertical position, so that they will strike fairly upon the article to be stamped.
The narrow part L ofthe slot, at the upper end, also locks the stamps at the right position to strike the inking-pads fairly, and holds them at the beginning of the downward movement until they have' moved sufficiently to swing clear of the inking-pads or part F of the stock.
Having thus described my invention,
. I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The stamps A B, shaft- O, projections N, hooked pawl O, grooved bar K, pistons D, tubes E, springs H, and stock F R G, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this Sth day of October, 1870.
