To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES K. GILEs, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watch-Cases, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of a watch embodying my improvements; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same on the line w of Fig. l, and on-an enlarged scale; Fig. 3, an elevation of the central portion of the box which receives the movement, on the same scale as Fig. l Fig. 4, a vertical sectional view of the case-center on the same scale, and Fig. a sectional view on the line 1) o of Fig. 4, and on the same scale.

My invention relates to watch-cases, its object being to render them dust-proof, and is in the nature of an improvement on the Batents granted to me February 19, 1884, Nos. 293,860 and 293,861.

I will now proceed to describe in detail my invention, and then specifically point out in the claims the feature which I consider to be new.

In the drawings, A denotes an inner band or ring of suitable size and shape to receive the movement of the watch. It is provided at its upper edge with an internal rabbet, a, to receive the front plate of the movement. In my patents above referred to this band is externally screw-threaded on its upper and lower edges only, the two threads running in opposite directions. In my present construction this band is screw-threaded throughout its entire depth, the threads extending from top to bottom, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, for the purposes hereinafter stated. The band A may be provided with a removable back cap, A, which is preferably sprung into place, fitting tightly within the band, as shown. The movement may be prevented from turning in the band by the ordinary notch and pin or any other suitable means. The bezel B, carrying the crystal B, is internally screw-threaded, and screws down on the upper portion of the band A, as shown in Fig. 2.

This center is screw-threaded internally to receive the externally screw-threaded band A, which is thus secured therein in any desired relative position. The front plate, D, of the case is preferably hinged in the ordinary manner to the center 0, as shown in Fig. 4, while the back plate, E, screws upon the band A, and clamps the case-center between its projecting edge and that of the bezel B.

In the application of my improvement to actual use, the movement is first placed within the band A, and the bezel B is then screwed on. The band A is then screwed into the center 0, and the back plate, E, screwed down on the band A, thus clamping the center between the bezel and back plate. By screwing the band into the center, a better connection between the two and a firmer support for the center are obtained, and the relative position of the one within the other may be varied within certain limits without affecting the clamping action of the back plate and bezel. The back cap, A, being removable, the movement maybe reached without removing it from the band; but the back cap may be made in one piece with the band without departing from the principle of my invention.

It is also obvious that that portion of my improvement relating to the screw-threaded connection between the band and center is applicable to the constructions shown in my prior patents hereinbefore mentioned. I therefore do not limit myself to the precise details of construction herein shown and described, as various mechanical modifications may be made therein without departing from the principle of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a watch-case,a movement-bandlthreaded across its entire periphery, in combination with an internallythreaded ring-center, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. In a watch-case, the externally-threaded inner band adapted to receive the movement, in combination with the internally-threaded center clamped thereon between the bezel and back plate or cap, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

3. In a watch-case, the combination, with the inner ring, adapted to receiveggthe movement IGC and screwthreadcd to receive the bezel and back plate, of the center having the front plate hinged thereto and clamped between the said bezel and back plate, substantially as and for 5 the purposes specified.

4. In a watch-case, the combination, with the externally-threaded inner ring,adapted to receive the movement, of the internally-threaded center having the front plate secured thereto and clamped between the bezel and back 10 plate, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
