The standard toilet bowls that, at this time, are Ibeing made and sold are composed of ceramic or vitreous china material that has been slip-cast in a mold to the desired shape. Such toilet bowls have integral water sealed traps usually of the S-trap type, that are positioned adjacent the waste outlet of such bowls, and have integral top rim flush water dispensers. A major part of the cost of manufacture of such a toilet 4bowl stems from the time required in casting the integral Water sealed S-trap and iiush water dispenser as an integral part of the bowl structure.
Applicants have found that a toilet bowl can satisfactorily be made by making a simple bowl and bowl support casting without the inclusion therein of the said integral trap and the said integral top rim flush water dispenser, thus saving much of the cost of manufacture. Such a bowl may be cast or formed in one piece, preferably of vitreous china, although any other material such as plastic or metal may be used.
A primary object of the invention, therefore, is to provide a simple ceramic toilet bowl having an integral support for said bowl and a separate top rim flush water dispenser mounted on the top rim of said bowl and a separate water trap unit that includes a deformable tube water seal aixed to the waste outlet of said bowl.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a water trapunit having a deformable plastic tube waterseal trap aiiixed to the waste outlet of a toilet bowl without an integral trap element therein, and having a linkage mechanism interconnecting said unit with a water flushing unit for said lbowl.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a water trap unit having a deformable plastic tube waterseal trap affixed to the waste outlet of a toilet bowl Without an integral trap element therein, in which said trap unit has a horizontally positioned trap actuating roller underlying said tube for opening and closing said trap and having an underlying tube cradle for said tube and with a linkage interconnection between said roller and a water flushing unit for said bowl.
Further objects of the invention reside in a toilet having a separate top rim flush water dispenser mounted on the top rim of a toilet bowl and a separate water trap unit having a deformable plastic tube water-seal trap affixed to the waste outlet thereof and a linkage water flushing unit interconnected therewith which is economic of manufacture, designed for a minimum space requirement, and a long eicient life of use and of light Weight construction, and which operates with a minimum of required iiush Water.
Other objects and advantages are more or less ancillary to the foregoing objects, and the manner in which all the various objects are described will appear in the following description, which considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, sets forth the preferred embodiment of the invention.

The toilet bowl assembly of the invention is illustrated in FIGURES 1, 3 and 5 of the drawing. It will be seen that the device of the invention comprises a bowl member A, a separate flush water dispenser top rim member B, a separate trap unit member C, a trap actuating linkage unit member D and an overow prevention member E.
The said bowl member A includes a bowl 10 having a Water ilushed bowl inner wall surface 11 and a support base 12 integral with said bowl. The said support base 12 has its side wall 13 generally U-shaped in horizontal cross section and has its open portion 14 thereof positioned toward the rear 15 of said bowl. The side wall 13 of said support base has portions 16 thereof extending rearwardly beyond the said rear 15 of said bowl and upwardly to adjacent the rim member B to provide a housing for said trap unit member C, said trap actuating linkage unit member D and said overow prevention member E. The bowl wall 11 is of generally uniform thickness with its top edge 17 lying in a horizontal plane. A circular waste outlet 18 for the said bowl 10 is provided centrally of the bottom portion thereof. Preferably the yaxis of the waste outlet 18 should be slightly oblique from the front to the rear of the bowl. The diameter of said outlet 18 is substantially the same as that of the soil pipe leading to the waste disposal.
The separate flush water dispenser top rim member B comprises a bowl contacting lower portion 21, overlying the top edge 17 of said bowl wall 11, and a seat receiving upper portion 22 mounted thereon. A channel 23 is provided on the bottom surface of said lower rim portion 21 to receive the said top edge 17 of the bowl wall 11 for engagement therewith. The upper surface 24 of said lower rim portion 21 is flat and has an upstanding side wall 25 on its outer vertical surface and a horizontal olf-set portion 26 within the bowl 10 and a like side wall 27 extending upwardly from the edge of said off-set portion 26 thereby forming a U-shaped water dispensing channel 28. Spaced apart apertures 29 are provided in said off-set portion 26 to flush the said inner surface wall 11 of the bowl with water from said channel 28.
The seat receiving upper portion 22 of said top rim member B is mounted on said lower portion 21, so that the top Wall 30 thereof p-rotrudes above the s- ide walls 25 and 27 of the llower portion 21, and is provided with top and side Walls that are somewhat thicker than the Walls of said lower portion 21. The said top wall 30 has a horizontal top surface 31. The outer side Wall 32 and inner side Wall 33 depend vertically from said top wa-ll 30 and have their respective outer surfaces in vertical alignment with the outer surfaces of said si-de Walls 25 and 27 of said `lower portion 21. The outer O side wall 32 thereof has a peripheral shoulder 34 on its outer surface in alignment with the top edge of the outer side wall 25 of the lower rim portion 21 to receive said outer side wall 25. Preferably the shouldered portion 35 of the side wall 32 extends to a point adjacent t-he upper surface 24 of said lower portion 21.
The said inner side wa-ll 33 of said upper portion 22 has a like 4peripheral shoulder 36 in its outer surface in ali-gnment with the top edge of the inner side wall 27 of the lower rim portion 21 t-o lreceive said inner side wall 27 and preferably also the shouldered portion 37 of the side wall 35 extends to a point adjacent the upper surface of the offset portion 26 of said lower portion 21.
The said top wall 30 has an outer periphery that generally follows the curvature of the bowl top edge a'long the forward half thereof, and rearwandly kfrom the side midpoints of the bowl it follows :an arcuate curve to the rear of the extensions 16 of the support base 12 of the bowl 10. The portion 38 of the said top wall 30 between the said extensions 16 has apertures 39 therein adapted to receive seat bolts for a toilet seat not shown. Preferably the porti-on 38 ybetween said extensions 16 may be slightly recessed as at 40. The periphery of the inner surface 41 of said top wall 30 generally follows the curvature of the bowl top edge throughout.
The said trap unit member C comprises a deformable plastic tubular S-trap 50 and a support cradle 51 therefor. The said tubular S-trap has an upper end portion 52 that is substantially vertical, a mid-portion 53 that is substantially horizontal when the trap is open and a lower end portion 54 that is substantially vertical. The diameter of said tubu-lar S-trap 50 is sufficiently large at its upper end 55 t-o receive the ,waste o-utlet 18 of the bowl 10 and at its lower end 56 to receive the upper end of a soil pipe 57. Strap clamps 58 and 59 are respectively mounted on said tubular S-trap adjacent the said upper and lower ends 55 and 56 respectively to provide leak proof connections between the said tubular S-trap and the said bowl 10 and soil pipe 57.
The tubular wall of said vertical lower portion 54 of said S-trap 50 has annular afccordian folds or bellows 60 therein spaced above the said strap clamp 59 mounted on the soil pipe 57 to provide :an expansion `in the length of said S-trap 50 and thus permit the mid-section 53 thereof to close when the lower half 61 of said mid-section 53 is raised above the normal open horizontal position.
A suitable material for use as an S-tr-ap 50 must be deformable and resistant to solvents however used in cleaning the flush toilets or disinfecting the disposal area. It is also important that such material shall be dur-able for a long life of use without replacement. It `has been found that urethane elastomer plastic is a suitable material although other plastics or materials having similar characteristics rnay ybe used.
The said support cradle 51 for said tubular S-trap 50 is provided to maintain the horizontal position of said mid-portion 53 thereof during the flush operation. The said cradle 51 has an arcuate shape to conform to the contiguous portions of the outer surface of the tubular S-t-rap 50 and is positioned to underlie the said horizontal mid-portion 53 of said S-trap 50 adjacent the upper vertical portion S2 thereof.
A support bracket 62 for said cradle 51 has a straight upper portion 63 and a lower arcuate portion 64 and is positioned along the front `of the upper vertical portion 52 of the tubular S-trap 50. The bracket 62 is preferably welded adjacent its lower end 65 to the lower surface of said cradle 51 and adjacent its upper end 66 to the said strap clamp 58. A reliever stud 67 may be provided on said bracket 62 opposite said `cradle 51 to contact the forward portion of the support base 12 of the bowl 10 and thereby reduce the strain upon the said strap clam-p 58 and waste outlet 18 during the ush operation.
The said trap actuating linkage unit member D as shown in FIG. 2 of the drawing comprises a pair of linkage chains '70 and 71, each such pair having a like straight forward link 72 and a like rearward link 73 having a converging mid-portion, a tie r-od 74 connecting forward and rearward links 72 and 73 as well as said pair of linkage cha-ins land 71, a roller 75 mounted on said tie rod 74 and an actuating lever 76 for said linkage chains 70` and 71.
Each said straight link 72 has an outwardly extending pin 77 adjacent its respective free front end. Said pins 77 are pivotally mounted in apertures 78 i-n the side wall 13 of t-he bowl support base 12, forward of and above the waste outlet 18 of said bowl 10 for vertical hinge movement of said straight links 72 along each side of said tubular S-trap 50. The said straight links 72 have apertures 79 adjacent the rear ends thereof and said converging links 73 have similar apertures 80 adjacent the lower forward ends thereof t-o hingedly receive said tie rod 74. The said converging lin-ks 73 have apertures 81 adjacent the upper rear ends thereof to receive the said actuating lever 76.
The roller is a hollow cylinder and is mounted for rotation on said tie rod 74 between said linkage chains 70 and 71. Preferably said roller 75 and tie rod 74 should be of sufficient length toV provide a seat for the tubular S-trap 50 in its collapsed upper position 4for sealing the trap as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4\of the drawings and to maintain each pair of linkage chains 70 and 71 in parallel vertical planes during actuation thereof.
The said actuating lever 76, as shown, has right and left laterally extending end portions 82 that are journaled with the opposite ends exposed in aligned journals 83 the wall of each of the rear extensions 16 that form the said housing of the support base side wall 13. The said journals 83 are in parallel axial alignment with the pins 77 of the straight links 72 and are adjacent to the bottom of the rear portion 38 of the top wall 30 of the top yri-rn member B and are spaced apart slightly from the rear 15 of the bowl 10. The mid-portion 84 of said lever 76 is U-shaped. In the construction shown the converging links 73 have the said apertures 81 adjacent the upper ends thereof by means of which they are mounted on the base of the U-shaped mid-portion 84.
The said actuating lever 76 may be made in two parts to :facilitate mounting the lever 7.6 in the said journals 83 and the said links 73 with the juncture thereof at the middle of the base of said U portion. The two parts may he secured together in the usual -rnanner such as a threaded lock nut 85.
A lever handle 86 may be provided through an extended end portion of one of the said exposed ends of said actuating lever 76. The said handle 86 extends forwardly along the side of the top rim member B in a direction opposite to that of the U-shaped mid-portion thereof for best leverage results.
In the open position of the tubular S-trap 5t) the said U-shaped mid-portion 84 of the lever 76 is in a downward substantially vertical position with the roller '7S slightly below the bottom of the said mid-portion of the S-trap. In the closed or sealed position of the tubular S-trap 50 the said U-shaped mid-portion 84 of the lever 76 is in a rearwardly extending substantially horizontal position with the roller 75 having raised the lower half 61 of the mid-portion 53 of the tubular S-trap to a point that is above the waste outlet 18 of the bowl and where the said mid-portion 53 of the tubular S-trap is in its said collapsed position and where the upper and lower halves of the said mid-portion 50 are in contact adjacent the roller 75. The said -upper tubular portion 52 of the S-trap `50 may thus retain the flush water added to the bowl after the said S- trap is closed to provide a water seal `for the toilet.
As shown in the closed or sealed position of the S-trap 50, the lever handle 86 extends in a forward horizontal position along the side of the top rim member B and the Ushaped midportion 84 extends in a rearward horizontal position. The S-trap may be opened by raising said lever handle 86 to a substantially vertical position which causes the said U-shaped mid-portion 84 of the lever 76 to assume the said downward substantially vertical position and the said roller 75 to assume its low position spaced slightly apart from the wall of said tubular mid-section 53.
The overow member E comprises a polyvinyl chloride tube 90, a upper elbow 91 mounted on the upper end of said tube 90 and a lower elbow 92 mounted on lower end thereof. The rear wall of the bowl 10 has an aperture 93 therein adjacent the bottom of the top rim member B into which the said upper elbow 91 is mounted. The said upper portion of the tube 90 depends downward along the outer surface of said rear wall 15 to a point adjacent the upper position of said roller 75 where it has a vertical loop trap 94. From said trap 94 it follows the rear contour of the tubular S-trap to a point below the said bellows 60 where there is an aperture 95 in the wall of the tubular S-trap 50 into which the said lower elbow 92 is mounted.
It will -be seen that the said member E will function to prevent an overflow of the bowl since it by-passes the said S-trap and is not sealed against water ow therethrough at any time.
The water supply unit, not shown, may be any one of the standard units which have a delayed closing supply valve to provide a reservoir of water in the bottom of the bowl between the flush periods. The said valve is lconnected to the said actuating lever 76 so that such valve will open as the said handle 86 thereof is raised -from its horizontal position and will close shortlyy after it is returned to said horizontal position. The said top rim member B is provided with a water supply aperture 96' in its outer rear wall and which opens into the water channel 28 thereof. A water4 supply pipe (not shown) is mounted in said aperture 96 to bring the flush water to the water channel 28 of the said top rim member B from said water supply dispensing valve.
It will be sen that the actuating 'lever 76 controls both the operation of the S-trap and the water supply. When the handle 86 thereof is raised, from its usual horizontal closed position for the water supply valve and S-trap, the roller begins to descend causing the tubular S-trap to open and at the same time causing the water supply valve to open and flush water to flow into the water channel 28 of the water dispenser top rim memberB and flow out of the apertures therein and down the inner surface of the bowl wall. This continues un-til |the handle 86 is returned to its horizontal position. As the handle 86 is lowered the roller is raised to a position which closes and seals the S-trap while the delayed action of the said water valve permits the liush water to .continue to flow for a short period to retain a supply of water in the bottom of the bowl until the next operation thereof. v
Although the foregoing description is necessarily of detailed character, in order that the invention may be completely set forth, it is to be understood that the specific terminology is not intended to be restrictive or confining, and that various rearrangements of parts and modifications of detail may be resorted to without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention as herein claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A toilet -bowl device of the water flush type comprising:
(a) a bowl having a thickness,
(1) a waste outlet in said bowl, (2) an overflow outlet in said bowl adjacent the rim thereof,
(b) a support base integral with said bowl substantially U-shaped in a horizontal plane cross section with the open end thereof at the rear of the bowl,
(1) said support base having side walls of subwall of substantially uniform` stantially uniform thickness extendingbelow said waste outlet and beyond the rear of the bowl .and forming a housing therefor.
(c) a flush water dispenser means mounted on the rim of said bowl,
(1) connecting means in said dispenser means for a water supply,
(d) a solvent resistant deformable tubular trap in said housing and connecting said waste outlet and a waste disposal pipe,
(1) clamp means for mounting said tubular trap on said waste outlet and said disposal pipe,
(e) a trap actuating lever means mounted in aligned apertures in the side walls of said housing adjacent the said water dispenser rim and adapted for connection with a regulating valve for said water supply to said water dispenser means,
(f) linkage means within said support base housing having an end pivotally mounted in the side walls thereof for hinge movement thereof .and an end mounted on said trap actuating lever for actuating said deformable tubular trap,
(g) overflow prevention means in said support base housing connecting said bowl overow outlet and said waste disposal pipe, and
(h) a trap in said overflow prevention means intermediate the terminals thereof.
2. The toilet bowl as defined in claim 1 wherein the flush water dispenser means comprises a continuous rim member overlying the said bowl rim and having a at top wall, substantially vertical side Walls, a bottom wall having a depending portion with an open channel therein to receive the said bowl rim, a water dispensing channel within said walls and apertures in said bottom wall adjacent the inner side wall for dispensing water on the inner bowl wall.
3. The toilet bowl as defined in claim 2 wherein the continuous rim member comprises a lower portion contacting the 'bowl rim :and having upstanding side walls and` an upper portion to receive a toilet seat mounted thereon having mating rabbeted depending side walls to receive said lower portion side walls and a rear portion thereof overlying said support base housing having apertures therein to receive toilet seat bolts.
4. The toilet bowl as dened in claim 1 wherein the deformable tubular trap comprises a substantially vertical forward upper section attached to said bowl waste outlet, a substantially horizontal collapsible cylindrical midsecton and a substantialy vertical rear lower section attached to said waste disposal pipe.
A5. The toilet lbowl as defined in claim 4 wherein the tubular wall o-f the said vertical rear lower section of the deformable tubular trap has annular folds therein.
A6. The toilet bowl as defined in claim 1 wherein the linkage means within said housing comprises a pair of linkage chains adjacent the side walls of said support base that are movable in substantially vertical parallel planes, each said chain extending between aligned journals in said side walls and said trap actuating lever, a tie rod underlying said tubular trap connecting said chains and a trap actuating roller mounted for rotation on said tie rod for raising said trap to a water seal closed trap position.
7. The toilet bowl as defined in claim 6 wherein the said actuating lever has a handle mounted on an extended end portion thereof adjacent the outer surface ofone of said side walls.
8. A toilet bowl device of the water flush type cornprising:
(a) a bowl having a wall of substantially uniform thickness,
(1) a waste outlet in said bowl, (2) an overflow outlet in said bowl adjacent the rim thereof,
(b) a support base integral with said bowl substantially U-shaped in a horizontal plane cross section with the open end thereof at the rear of the bowl,
(1) said support base having side walls of substantially uniform thickness extending below said waste outlet and beyond the rear f the bowl and forming a housing therefor.
(c) a ush water -dispenser means mounted on the rim `of said bowl,
(1) connecting means in said dispenser means for a water supply,
(d) a solvent resistant deformable tubular trap in said housing and connecting said waste outlet and a waste disposal pipe,
(1) clamp means for mounting said tubular trap on said waste outlet and said disposal pipe,
(e) support means for said deformable tubular trap underlying said mid-section thereof,
(f) a trap actuating lever means mounted in aligned apertures in the side walls of said housing adjacent the said water dispenser and adapted for connection with a regulating valve for said Water supply to said water dispenser means,
(g) linkage means within said support base having an end pivotally mounted in the side Walls thereof for hinge movement thereof and an end mounted on said trap actuating lever for actuating said deformable tubular trap,
(h) a handle mounted on the extended end portion of said actuating lever adjacent the outer surface of one of the side walls of said housing,
(i) overiiow prevention means in said support base housing connecting said bowl overflow outlet and said Waste disposal pipe, and
(j) a trap in said overflow prevention means intermediate the terminals thereof.
9. The toilet bowl as defined in claim 8 wherein the support means for said tubular trap comprises a support cradle underlying said trap adjacent to the waste outlet of said bowl and a support bracket attached to said cradle and mounted on said waste outlet of said bowl.
10. A toilet bowl device of the water flush type comprismg:
(a) a bowl having a wall of substantially uniform thickness,
(1) a waste outlet in said bowl,
(2) an overflow outlet in said bowl adjacent the rim thereof,
(b) a support base integral with said bowl substantially U-shaped in a horizontal plane cross section with the open end thereof at the rear of the bowl,
(l) said support base having side walls of substantially uniform thickness extending below said waste outlet and beyond the rear of the bowl and forming a housing thereof,
(c) a flush water dispenser means mounted on the rim of said bowl comprising a continuous rim member overlying the said bowl rim, a lower portion thereof having a bottom wall and upstanding side walls, said bottom wall having an open channel in the lower surface thereof to receive the bowl rim, said side walls forming a water dispensing channel, apertures in said bottom wall adjacent the inner side wall for dispensing water on the inner bowl wall, an upper portion of said continuous rim mounted on said lower portion to receive a toilet seat and having mating rabbeted depending side walls to receive said lower portion side walls, said upper portion having a rear portion thereof overlying said support base housing with apertures therein to receive toilet seat bolts.
(1) connecting means in said dispenser means for a Water supply,
(d) a solvent resistant -deformable tubular trap in said housing and connecting said waste outlet and a waste disposal pipe, said deformable tubular trap having a substantially vertical forward upper section attached to said bowl waste outlet, a substantially horizontal collapsible cylindrical mid-section and a substantially vertical rear section attached to said waste disposal pipe, the tubular Wall of said vertical rear lower section having annular folds therein in suflicient number whereby the lower wall of the said collapsible midsection thereof when it is raised above the horizontal plane passing through the waste outlet of said bowl will close the said trap and provide a water seal in said` upper forward section of the tubular trap and said waste outlet,
(e) support means for said deformable tubular trap underlying said mid-section thereof,
(f) a trap actuating lever means mounted in aligned apertures in the side walls of said housing adjacent the said water dispenser rim and adapted for connection with a regulating valve for said water supply to said water dispenser means,
(g) linkage means within saidsupport base housing having an end pivotally mounted in the side walls thereof for hinge movement thereof and an end mounted on said trap actuating lever for actuating said deformable tubular trap,
(h) a handle mounted on the extended end portion of the said actuating lever adjacent the outer surface of one of the side walls of said housing,
(i) overflow prevention means in said support base housing connecting said bowl overflow outlet and said waste disposal pipe, and
(j) a trap in said overow prevention means intermediate the terminals thereof.
11. The toilet lbowl as defined in claim 10 wherein the linkage means within said housing comprises a pair of linkage chains adjacent the side walls of said support base that are movable in substantially vertical parallel planes, each said chain having two movable links and extending between aligned journals in said side Walls and `said trap actuating lever, a tie rod underlying said tubular trap and pivotally connecting said links and connecting said chains, and a trap actuating roller mounted for rotation on said tie rod for raising said trap to a Water seal closed trap position.
12. The toilet bowl as defined in claim 10 wherein the support means for said tubular trap comprises a support cradle underlying said trap adjacent to the waste outlet of said bowl and a support bracket attached to said cradle and mounted on said Waste outlet of said bowl.

Claims (1)

1. A TOILET BOWL DEVICE OF THE WATER FLUSH TYPE COMPRISING: (A) A BOWL HAVING A WALL OF SUBSTATIALLY UNIFORM THICKNESS, (1) A WASTE OUTLET IN SAID BOWL, (2) AN OVERFLOW OUTLET IN SAID BOWL ADJACENT THE RIM THEREOF, (B) A SUPPORT BASE INTEGRAL WITH SAID BOWL SUBSTANTIALLY U-SHAPED IN A HORIZONTAL PLANE CROSS SECTION WITH THE OPEN END THEREOF AT THE REAR OF THE BOWL, (1) SAID SUPPORT BASE HAVING SIDE WALLS OF SUBSTANTIALLY UNIFORM THICKNESS EXTENDING BELOW SAID WASTE OUTLET AND BEYOND THE REAR OF THE BOWL AND FORMING A HOUSING THEREFOR. (C) A FLUSH WATER DISPENSER MEANS MOUNTED ON THE RIM OF SAID BOWL, (1) CONNECTING MEANS IN SAID DISPENSER MEANS FOR A WATER SUPPLY, (D) A SOLVENT RESISTANT DEFORMABLE TUBULAR TRAP IN SAID HOUSING AND CONNECTING SAID WASTE OUTLET AND A WASTE DISPOSAL PIPE, (1) CLAMP MEANS FOR MOUNTING SAID TUBULAR TRAP ON SAID WASTE OUTLET AND SAID DISPOSAL PIPE, (E) A TRAP ACTUATING LEVER MEANS MOUNTED IN ALIGNED APERTURES IN THE SIDE WALLS OF SAID HOUSING ADJACENT THE SAID WATER DISPENSER RIM AND ADAPTED FOR CONNECTION WITH A REGULATING VALVE FOR SAID WATER SUPPLY TO SAID WATER DISPENSER MEANS, (F) LINKAGE MEANS WITHIN SAID SUPPORT BASE HOUSING HAVING AN END PIVOTALLY MOUNTED IN THE SIDE WALLS THEREOF FOR HINGE MOVEMENT THEREOF AND AN END MOUNTED ON SAID TRAP ACTUATING LEVER FOR ACTUATING SAID DEFORMABLE TUBULAR TRAP, (G) OVERFLOW PREVENTION MEANS IN SAID SUPPORT BASE HOUSING CONNECTING SAID BOWL OVERFLOW OUTLET AND SAID WASTE DISPOSAL PIPE, AND (H) A TRAP IN SAID OVERFLOW PREVENTION MEANS INTERMEDIATE THE TERMINALS THEREOF.
