SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,206, dated November 10, 1885.

Application filed June 27, 1885. Serial No. 169,917.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LEMUEL A. OHIcHEs- TER, of Phoenicia, county of Ulster, and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chairs; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates particularly to the attachment of the table for a high chair; and the invention consists in a childs high chair combined with a table,which is hinged to one arm of the chair on one side,and which enters into a slot on the other side formed in the opposite chair-arm, to which it is secured by a spring and button, as is with greater particularity hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of my invention; Fig. 2, a section taken on the line or as, Fig. 1, Fig. 3, an under side View; and Fig. 4, a section taken on the line y y, Fig. 1.

Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.

This invention relates, particularly, to that class of high chairs the back and arms of which are made from apiece of bent wood. The difficulty experienced in attaching tables to chairs having this construction arises from the fact that the bent-wood arms and back are easily influenced by changes in the state of the atmosphere, so that it is difficult to fit a table to such arms accurately, or so that it can at all times be easily adj ustedthat is, opened from the chair to admit its occupant and closed to confine him. My chair, therefore, having its back and arms A and A made from steamed and bent wood by the ordinary process, is providedwith a table, B, made of any desirable shape or material. To one side of this table, and at or near its inner edge, is fixed a hinge and swivel, G. The opposite side of the table is formed with a projection, D, and the arm A has made in it a slot, E, of sufficient (No model.)

width and depth to receive within it the projection D. To the under side of the table B, and extending beneath the projection D, is secured a spring-rod, F, one end of which protrudes through the upper surface of the table and terminates in a knob, a. To the under side of the arm A, and beneath the slot E, formed therein, is formed a notch, b, and is fixed a button, 0.

Now,when my chair is constructed, substantially as I have described it above, its table 1s operated by simply inserting the projection D into the slot E, the under part of the arm A or the under part of the slot E passing between the under side of the table 13 and the spring F, the spring in that case entering into the notch b, in which it is retained by turning the button 0 over it. To remove the table or open it out from the chair, the button 0 is turned back, the knob a depressed until the springrod F is forced out of the notch b, and the table pulled outward, disengaging the projection D from the slot E, and permitting it to turn and swing on its hinge 0 without difficulty.

Now, since the projection D extends somewhat beyond the slot E, it is evident that the contraction or expansion of the arms A and A can have no material effect upon the ad justment of the table, since the expansion and contraction of the arms are amply provided for by the length of the projection, and any change in the width between the arms is therefore immaterial.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A chair with the end of one of its arms provided with a slot, E, a notch, b, and combined with a table, B, constructed with a projection, D, on one side of the same, so that said projection may enter within said slot,and a spring, F, beneath said projection, as and for the purpose described.
