(Cl. 15S-116) The present invention relates to a gas burner and has for its primary object Ithe provision of a new and improved gas burner of the type used as a top burner on a domestic gas range.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a new and improved gas burner characterized by its small size, small port area and high B.t.u. rating.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a gas burner operating with good aeration and flame stability and with a minimum of ashback.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a gas burner having an annular discharge port defining region including a plurality of angularly spaced apart circular por-ts and a pair of discrete slots between each pair of ports, wherein said slots are narrow and elongated and extend a-bove and below the circular ports and wherein, further, the pair of slots between each pair of Circular ports are inclined upwardly and away from each other and also converge toward each other in the direction of the exterior of the burner, i.e., in the direction of the ow of gas therethrough.
In brief, the gas burner of the present invention includes a cap having an annular discharge port defining region. This region is provided with a plurality of angularly spaced apart circular ports 'and a pair of discrete slots between each pair of ports. These slots are elongated and narrow and have their extremities above and below the level of the circular ports. The slots of e'ach pair are inclined upwardly and away from each other. They also converge toward each other in the direction of the exterior of the burner. The lower ends of the slots of each pair are spaced apart from each other and the upper ends are laterally spaced from an adjacent port.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become 'apparent from the ensuing description of an illustrative embodiment in the course of which reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is an elevational View of a gas burner constructed in accordance with the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a fragmentary, enlarged cross sectional view taken along the line 2 2 of FIG. l;
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary, enlarged elevational view better illustrating the port defining region; and
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal cross sectional View taken along the line 4 4 of FIG. 2, illustrating further details of the construction of the circular ports and slots.
Referring now to the drawings and first to FIG. 1, the burner of the present invention is indicated as a whole by the reference character 10. It includes a burner b'ase 12 upon which is detachably supported an annular burner cap 14 constructed in accordance with the present invention and defining with the base an annular burner charnber 16 to which gas is supplied in suitable manner as through a side portion 18 of the burner base. The base includes an annular inner wall 20 'and an annular outer wall 22, these having upper surfaces 24 and 26, respectively, upon which the burner cap 14 is adapted to seat.
The cap 14 is preferably made, as by 'a series of stamping operations, of some thin material, such as aluminum, while the base 12 may be cast or otherwise formed of aluminum.
The burner cap 14, in 'accordance with the present invention, is provided with lan annular discharge port delining region indicated as a whole by the reference character 30 and formed by an outer wall 32 having an upward and inward inclination of about 5. The lower part of the port defining region (wall 32) terminates in a horizontal ledge 34 seating upon the base surface 26. The cap has an inner wall 36 that is inclined slightly upwardly and outwardly and connected to a top 38 having an over-hanging ledge 39. The inner wall 36 has at its lower end a shoulder 40 seating upon the top of the base inner wall 24, a downwardly extending portion 42 iitted closely into the central wall 20 of the burner, and a horizontal flange 44 providing a central aperture 46 providing secondary air to the burner.
The burner defining region and preferably the cap 14 in its entirety is made of aluminum having a thickness of about .050 inch. The mean diameter of the port defining region`30 is about 2% inches.
In accordance with the present invention the port defining region is constructed and arranged to provide a small high rate burner and 'a low turndown with no flashback by virtue of improved aeration and flame stabilization. These results are achieved through the use of a plurality of angularly spaced Iapart circular ports 50 between each pair of which is arranged a pair of inclined narrow elongated discrete slots S2 and 54 that converge toward each other in the direction of the exterior of the burner, i.e., in the direction of the flow of gas therethrough. The slots 52 Iare formed with rounded ends that project respectively above and below the ports and the upper ends of which are laterally spaced from an adjacent port 50 and the lower ends of which are spaced from each other. In a cap constructed in accordance with the present invention there have been provided nineteen circular ports 5t) and nineteen pairs of slots 52 and 54.
The circular ports 50 may be constructed as by a No. 58 punch providing holes with a diameter of .O42 inch, and in the illustrated embodiment there are nineteen of the ports. The slots have a width of .039 inch, a total length of .203 and are inclined 11 from the vertical so that the included angle between adjacent slots 52 and 54 is 22. The slots are spaced apart 5%4 inch at their lower ends and 3/,6 inch 'at their upper ends, as measured from their center lines. The upper ends are laterally spaced 1/16 inch from an adjacent port.
The convergence of adjacent slots S2 and 54 toward each other is accomplished by a series of punching operations in each of which two slots and a circular port are formed. Several such series are indicated by the reference characters I, II, III, etc. The circular port is, as best illustrated in FIG. 4, located lon and normal to a radial line through the center of the burner and the associated slots punched at the same time are parallel to the port. This method provides the desired convergence about nineteen degrees in the described construction be- -tween adjacent slots so that the flames issuing therefrom impinge upon each other, -as indicated by the two flames indicated yby reference character 56 in FIG. 4.
A burner constmcted as described above has been found to provide as high a B.t.u. output `as previous larger size burners. They also provide lower turn down operation with no flashback. Also, good aeration has been achieved along with stability of operation. Good aeration is provided for the circular ports and the slots on either side thereof by virtue 'of the inclined relationship of the slots and the location of port 50, which is located somewhat closer to the upper ends of the slots than to the lower ends. Also, the flames projected from adjacent slots 52 and 54 between ports converge so that mutual stabilization is provided from the convergence of the llames issuing therefrom. Also, the burner actually has less port area than equal rate prior burners because of the improved secondary aeration. l
While the present invention has been described in connection with the details of an illustrative embodiment these details are not intended to be limitative of the invention except insofar as set forth in the accompanying claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is: y
1. A gas kburner cap h-aving an annular discharge port dening region including a plurality of angularly spaced apart circular ports kand a pair of discrete sots between each pair of ports, said slots being narrow and vertically elongated and extending above and below the circular ponts, and the pair of slots between each pair of circular ports being inclined upwardly and away from each other and also converging toward each other in the direction of the exterior of the burner.
2. A gas burner cap having an annular discharge port rdening region inclu-ding a plurality 1of pairs of narrow elongated discrete slots that are inclined upwardly and away from each other and that also converge toward each other in the direction of the exterior of the burner.
3. A gas Aburner cap having an annular dscharge port defining region including a plurality of angularly spaced apart circular ports and a pair or" discrete slots between each pair of ports, said slots being narrow and elongated and extending above and below the circular ports, and the pair of slots between each pair of circular ports being inclined upwardly and away from each other and also converging toward each other in the direction of the exterior of the burner, the lower ends of the slots of each pair being spaced apart from each other, `and the upper ends being laterally spaced from an adjacent port;
4. A gas burner comprising a burner cap having an yannular discharge port dening region about 21/s inches in diameter and inclined ve degrees upwardly and inwardly including nineteen angnlarly spaced apart circular ports .O42 inch in .diameter and .a pair of )discrete slots between each pair of ports, said slots each being .O39 inch wide and having a total length of .203 inch and extending above and below the circular ports, and each of the pair of slots lbetween each pair of circular ports being inclined eleven degrees from the vertical upwardly and away from each other to have an included angle of twenty-two degrees lbetween them, said pair of slots also converging toward each other in the direction of the exterior of theburner with an included angle of about nineteen degrees between them, the lower ends of the slots of each pair being spaced apart inch from each other, the upper ends being spaced apart 5l/1G inch on their centerlines, and `the upper ends being laterally spaced 1/16 inch from an adjacent port.

Claims (1)
1. A GAS BURNER CAP HAVING AN ANNULAR DISCHARGE PORT DEFINING REGION INCLUDING A PLURALITY OF ANGULARLY SPACED APART CIRCULAR PORTS AND A PAIR OF DISCRETE SLOTS BETWEEN EACH PAIR OF PORTS, SAID SLOTS BEING NARROW AND VERTICALLY ELONGATED AND EXTENDING ABOVE AND BELOW THE CIRCULAR PORTS, AND THE PAIR OF SLOTS BETWEEN EACH PAIR OF CIRCULAR PORTS BEING INCLINED UPWARDLY AND AWAY FROM EACH OTHER AND ALSO CONVERGING TOWARD EACH OTHER IN THE DIRECTION OF THE EXTERIOR OF THE BURNER.
