IMPROVEMENT IN STOPPING JARS, 86C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,00 2, dated August (i, 1861.

I employ a bar, C, which is of sufficient length to extend across thevcenter of the cover E of the jar D. Two curved inclined arms, A, are attached to the bar C, said arms being formed and connected to the extremities of the bars in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The arms A are curved, so that they embrace the neck B of the jar when the fastening is in its place7 and which run parallel or in the same direction with the cross-bar C. The arms A are provided on their inner surfaces with inclines a, which catch under lugs b, pro jecting from the sides of the neck, and when the'arms are turned the center of the cross-bar C is forced down upon the center of the cover, and a tight joint is produced between the latter and the jar. llhe cross-bar is provided with a bearer, c, in its center, which is made of india-rubber or some other elastic material,
so that when the same is forced down upon the center of the cover the latter has perfect freedom to adjust itself to the top edge of the jar, and the danger1 of breaking or splitting the cover is obviated.
The peculiar advantage of my device is derived from the combination of the arms A with the cross-bar C, and from the position of the inclines in regard to said cross-bar. If power is applied to my device, the center of the crossbar is slightly forced up, which will produce a tendency to throw the ends of said bar in toward the neck of the bottle or jar, and by this very tendency the inclines a' are forced out away from the sides of the neck, and at the same time the cover adjusts itself with perfect freedom tothe edge of the jar or bottle, and a tight joint is produced.
I do not claim, broadly, the employment of a central pivot in the can-top; nor do I claim, broadly, the employment of tops that have inclincs upon them fitting under lugs upon the can; but,
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent as an improved article of manufacture- A can-top that is composed of a central crossbar, an elastic bearer, and curved inclined arms A, the whole combined as herein shown .and described.
