No. 410,610 10 Claims. (Cl. -100) The present invention relates to a convertible crib bed in general, and to a bed which is changeable from a crib into a youth bed and in turn into an adult bed, in particular.

It has been proposed before to provide a combination baby crib and youth bed construction, which includes a foot board having a detachable upper section and side rails having detachable foot board sections which permit the device to be converted from a baby crib to a youth bed.

It is one object of the present invention to provide a bed structure which is convertible from a crib bed to a youth bed and, furthermore, from a youth bed into an adult bed.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a convertible crib bed, wherein the head board comprises two sections and the food board comprises three sections, and upon conversion of the crib bed into a youth bed, the uppermost of the three sections of the foot board is removed, so that the head board is of greater height than the foot board, and upon further conversion from the youth bed into an adult bed, the uppermost section of the head board and the intermediate section of the foot board are removed, so that the head board is again of a greater height than that of the foot board.

It is still another object of the present invention to provide a convertible crib bed, wherein the crib bed is equipped on one side with an immovable side gate consisting of three parts, which immovable side gate is disposed adjacent the wall at which the crib bed is located, while another side gate is movable upwardly and downwardly, an expedient which is conventional in crib beds.

It is still another object of the present invention to provide a convertible crib bed, in which the immovable side gate, which comprises three sections, has two bottom sections, one of which is removed and attached permanently to the opposite side of the bed upon conversion into a youth bed, while the top section of the immovable side gate is discarded.

:It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a convertible crib bed, which has a pair of longitudinal side rails which can be extended telescopically at both ends, in order to enlarge the distance between the bead board and the foot board upon conversion of the crib bed into a youth bed and capable of further enlarging upon conversion from the youth bed into an adult bed.

With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the subject matter of the present invention, show-n as a crib bed;

FIG. 2 is a section along the lines 2-2 of FIG. 1;

FIG. 3 is a side elevation of. a youth bed designed in accordance with the present invention after conversion from a crib bed;

FIG. 4 is a side elevation of an adult bed designed in accordance with the :present invention, after conversion from a youth bed into -an adult bed;

Referring now to the drawings, and in particular to FIGS. 1 to 3, the bed designed in accordance with the present invention, comprises a head board 1, a foot board 2, and the head board 1 is connected with the foot board 2 by means of a pair of side rails 3 (FIG. 3), which are not shown in FIG. 1 for the purpose of better demonstration of the present invention.

The head board 1 comprises two sections including a pair of parallel lower posts 4 which carry between them a lower panel 5, which lower posts 4 are connected by means described in better detail below with upper posts 6 which carry between them an upper panel 7.

The foot board 2 comprises three sections including a pair of lower posts 8 which carry between them a lower panel 9, the lower posts 8 being connected with intermediate posts 10 carrying between them an intermediate pan-e1 11. The intermediate posts 10 are connected with upper posts 12 which carry between them an upper panel 13.

As clearly indicated in FIGS. 1 and 2, the rear side gate is permanently secured to the corresponding

6 and 12, respectively, by means of screws 15 or by any other suitable means. The rear side gate .14 comprises two lower sections 1 6, which have curved upper rails 17 and which are of identical 'and particularly of mirror image configuration. A top section 18' is disposed on the lower sections 16 and has a bottom rail 19 which is integrally formed and complementary to the two top rails 17 of the lower sections 16, while the top rail 20 of the top section 18' is conventionally extending horizontally.

Referring now to FIG. 3, the bed is shown after its conversion into a youth bed.

Referring now again to FIG. 1 of the drawings, it will be apparent that the front

8 and 12 have secured thereto guide rods 21. The latter are equipped with compression coil springs 22 and the guide rods 21 permit raising and lowering of a front side gate 23 of conventional rectangular configuration. The front and rear side gates are preferably formed of a plurality of vertical members in' conventional manner. The front side gate 23 can be retained in an upper position and a lower position or even intermediate positions by means conventional in the art, which means are not shown in the drawing, since they do not constitute part of the present invention.

In order to convert the crib bed as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, into a youth bed as shown, for instance, in FIG. 3, the top section 18' of the rear side gate is removed and discarded and in addition, the front side gate 23 is likewise removed and discarded, as well as the guide rods 21, and one of the lower side gates 16, which is disposed adjacent the foot board 2 is likewise removed and rigidly secured to the front lower post 4 and the front upper post 6, respectively of the head board 1, as indicated in FIG. 3 of the drawings by means of screws 15 or the like.

Referring to FIG. 9 of the drawings, the side rails 3 have extension members 3' preferably at both ends thereof, which are preferably of angular cross-section complementary to the angular cross-section of the side rails 3 and which can be telescoped relative to the side rails 3, so that the length of the bed, that means the distance between the head board 1 and the foot board 2, can be easily adjusted to the required length. For this purpose, the side rails 3 have at both ends a plurality of bores 3 and complementary bores 3 are disposed at the same spacing from each other in the extension members 3, so that the latter can easily be secured by means of bolts (not shown) to the side rails 3. In this manner, the youth bed can be arranged at any predetermined length.

Referring now again to the drawings and in particular to FIG. 1, it is preferable to provide decorative top members 24 on the crib bed shown in FIG. 1, which is properly secured to the

6 and 12, respectively. Upon conversion of the crib bed into a youth bed, the top members 24 are removed from the top posts 12 together with the panel 13, so that the foot board 2 is slightly lower than the head board 1 upon conversion into the youth bed.

Referring now again to the drawing and in particular to FIG. 4, the conversion from a youth bed into an adult bed is shown. In this case, the .members 16 of the side gate are removed and the side rails 3 with the extension 3 which carry the bed spring 25 can be mounted in a lower position by any conventional means (not shown). The upper posts 6 with the panel 7 of the head board, as well as the intermediate posts 10 with the panel 11 have been removed, so that the head board 1 comprises now merely the lower posts 4 with the panel of the head board 1 and the lower posts 8 with the pane-l 9 of the foot board 2. 4 and 8 preferably the top members 24 are again attached. It is, thus, apparent that the head board 1 and the foot board 2 are still lower in the adult bed than the head board and foot board applied in the youth bed. In order to make possible the lowering of the head board 1 and the foot board 2 in the youth bed compared with the crib bed, it is apparent that it is required that the head board 1 comprises two sections and the foot board 2 comprises three sections. In order to obtain the normal height of the head board and of the foot board of the adult bed, it is then required to remove the top section of the head board 1 and additionally the intermediate section of the foot board 2 to arrive at an arrangement as indicated in FIG. 4, where the head board and the foot board are of a height conventional in adult beds.

Referring now to FIGS. 5 and 6, it will be also apparent that the height of each of the sections in the foot board, as well as in the head board can be varied according to requirements. FIGS. 5 and 6 disclose an elevation of the foot board indicating the posts, 8, 10, and 12, and 8', 10' and 12, respectively, the difference between the showing of FIGS. 5 and 6 being merely in the height of the respective sections. The top members 24 and 24', respectively are, however, identical in both embodiments.

Referring now again to the drawings, and in particular to FIG. 7, the crib bed structure is substantially identical with that shown in FIG. 1 and the

8, 10 and 12 for the foot board 2.

The rear gate 18 is of conventional structure, yet permanently secured to the

4 and 6, respectively of the head board 1, as well as to the

8, 10 and 12, respectively of the foot board 2. FIG. 7 also indicates conventional hook means 26, which permit to raise or lower the bed spring 27 into any required position. In addition, FIG. 7 also indicates a spring-biased lever 28 which cooperates with brackets 29 secured to the lower rail of the front gate 23'. The rear gate 18 is rigidly secured by means of bolts to the respective

4 and 6 of the head board 1 and to the respective

8 and 12 of the foot board 2. The rear gate 18 is of conventional structure and does not require any detailed description.

Referring now again to the drawings and in particular to FIGS. 9 to 11, means are shown for connection of the respective posts to adjacent upper or lower posts, which posts are in superposed position relative to each other. FIG. 10 shows an exploded view of the foot board indicating again the

In order to connect each pair of adjacent posts, a pin member 31 extends from the bottom face of each of the posts which is received in a complementary bore 32 of the top face of the adjacent post disposed therebelow. The posts are equipped with vertical grooves 33 which receive the lateral edges of the panels disposed therebetween. The upper edges of the panels are received in shoes 34, such that the U-shaped shoes 34 of each pair of adjacent panels engage each other at the base of the U and secure thereby the panels in their positions.

Referring now again to FIG. 2 of the drawings, a cover plate 35 of a suitable material, as plastic or the like, and of a configuration similar to that of the top section 18 is mounted over the top section 18. This cover 35 plate is adapted to prevent that the child attempts to step on the bottom rail 19 of the top section 18 and would be then subjected to injuries. By covering up the top rail with a cover plate, it is safely prevented that the child steps on the top section 18, and climbs up on the bottom rail 19 of the top section 18. It is, however, also possible to make the top section 18' of full material instead of providing a plurality of vertical bars, in which case the cover can be disposed with.

While we have disclosed several embodiments of the present invention, it is to be understood that these embodiments are given by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the present invention being determined by the objects and the claims.

We claim:

1. A convertible bed comprising a head board,

a foot board,

a pair of side rails releasably connecting said head board with said foot board,

a first side gate disposed between said head board and said foot board,

a first guide rod secured to one side of said head board, and

a second guide rod secured to one side of said foot board, a second side gate disposed between said head board and said foot board opposite said first side gate,

said head board comprising a lower section and an upper section removably disposed on top of said lower section,

said foot board comprising a lower section, a median section removably disposed on top of said lower section and an upper section removably disposed on top of said median section, and

means for releasably connecting each of said sections from its adjacent lower section, and

said upper section of said head board being adapted to be removed upon conversion of said bed from a youth bed to an adult bed,

said upper section of said foot board being adapted to be removed upon conversion of said bed from a crib bed to a youth bed, and

said median section of said foot board being adapted to be removed upon conversion of said bed from a youth bed to an adult bed.

2. A convertible bed comprising a head board,

a foot board,

a first side gate rigidly secured to and between said head board and to said foot board, respectively,

a first guide rod secured to one side of said head board, and

a second guide rod secured to one side of said foot board,

a second side gate movable vertically along said guide rods,

said head board com-prising a lower section and an upper section removably disposed on top of said lower section,

said foot board comprising a lower section, a median section removably disposed on top of said lower section, and an upper section removably disposed on top of said median section, and

3. The convertible bed, as set forth in claim 1, wherein said first side gate is of rectangular configuration, and

which includes another side gate of a length shorter than the length of the bed and to be secured selectively to said head board in place of said first side gate.

4. The convertible bed, as set forth in claim 1, wherein said first side gate comprises two bottom sections of mirror image configuration and extending for half of the length of the bed and a top section extending for the entire length of the bed and having a bottom configuration complementary to the top configuration of both of said bottom sections,

a first rail disposed on top of each of said bottom sections and a second rail disposed on the bottom of said top section of said first side gate and complementarily engaging both of said first rails, and said bottom sections to be applied to opposite sides of said head board and said top sections to be discarded, upon conversion of said bed from a crib bed to a youth bed, 5. The convertible bed, as set forth in claim 4, which includes a board removably secured to and of a configuration substantially identical with said top section of said first side gate, in order to cover said top section of said first side gate.

6. The convertible bed, as set forth in claim 4, wherein said top section comprises a plate having a bottom edge complementary to the top edges of said bottom sections.

' 7. The convertible bed, as set forth in claim 1, wherein said pair of side rails has an extension member at least at one end of each of said side rails,

said extension member being telescopically connected with said side rails, and

means for selectively securing said extension member to said side rails in any one of a plurality of positions.

8. The convertible bed, as set forth in claim 1, wherein each of said sections comprises two posts disposed parallel to and spaced apart from each other, and

a panel secured at its lateral ends to said posts, and

each of said posts having a pin extending substantially centrally axially from the bottom end face of said posts, said first pin being adapted to be received in complementary openings of the top end face of an adjacent post therebelow.

9. The convertible bed, as set forth in claim 1, wherein each of said sections comprises two vertically disposed opposite posts, and

a panel secured between said opposite posts,

each of said posts has a vertical groove in the face opposite said panel to receive the lateral edge of the latter, and

U-shaped shoe members disposed on and receiving the top and bottom edges, respectively, of said panel, and the base of each of said shoe members engaging the base of the adjacent shoe members in order to retain the panels in position between said posts.

10. A convertible bed comprising a head board,

a foot board,

a first side gate disposed between said head board and said foot board, a second side gate disposed between said head board and said foot board opposite said first side 'gate, means for lowering at least a part of at least one of said side gates,

. said upper section of said head board being adapted to be removed upon conversion of said bed from a youth bed to an adult bed,

Claims

1. A CONVERTIBLE BED COMPRISING A HEAD BOARD, A FOOT BOARD, A PAIR OF SIDE RAILS RELEASABLY CONNECTING SAID HEAD BOARD WITH SAID FOOT BOARD, A FIRST SIDE GATE DISPOSED BETWEEN SAID HEAD BOARD AND SAID FOOT BOARD, A FIRST GUIDE ROD SECURED TO ONE SIDE OF SAID HEAD BOARD, AND A SECOND GUIDE ROD SECURED TO ONE SIDE OF SAID FOOT BOARD, A SECOND SIDE GATE DISPOSED BETWEEN SAID HEAD BOARD AND SAID FOOT BOARD OPPOSITE SAID FIRST SIDE GATE, SAID HEAD BOARD COMPRISING A LOWER SECTION AND AN UPPER SECTION REMOVABLY DISPOSED ON TOP OF SAID LOWER SECTION, SAID FOOT BOARD COMPRISING A LOWER SECTION, A MEDIAN SECTION REMOVABLY DISPOSED ON TOP OF SAID LOWER SECTION AND AN UPPER SECTION REMOVABLY DISPOSED ON TOP OF SAID MEDIAN SECTION, AND MEANS FOR RELEASABLY CONNECTING EACH OF SAID SECTIONS FROM ITS ADJACENT LOWER SECTION, AND SAID UPPER SECTION OF SAID HEAD BOARD BEING ADAPTED TO BE REMOVED UPON CONVERSION OF SAID BED FROM A YOUTH BED TO AN ADULT BED, SAID UPPER SECTION OF SAID FOOT BOARD BEING ADAPTED TO BE REMOVED UPON CONVERSION OF SAID BED FROM A CRIB BED TO A YOUTH BED, AND SAID MEDIAN SECTION OF SAID FOOT BOARD BEING ADAPTED TO BE REMOVED UPON CONVERSION OF SAID BED FROM A YOUTH BED TO AN ADULT BED.
