7 Claims. (Cl. -2)
This invention generally relates to a bed construction and more specifically provides a combination baby crib and youth bed.
An object of the present invention is to provide a combination baby crib and youth bed construction involving improved and novel structural details which permit the device to be utilized either as a baby crib or as a youth bed, and which may be easily and quickly converted from one type of unit to another type of unit.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a combination baby crib and youth bed including a foot board having a detachable upper section and side rails having detachable foot board sections which permit the device to be converted from a baby crib to a youth bed.
Other important objects of the present invention will reside in its simplicity of construction, ease of conversion from a baby crib to a youth bed, long lasting qualities, its adaptation for its specific purposes and its relatively inexpensive manufacturing costs.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present invention showing the device utilized as a baby crib;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal, vertical sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 22 of Figure 1 showing the details of construction of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a transverse, vertical sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 3-3 of Figure 2 showing the means for supporting the side rails in elevated position when used as a baby crib;
Figure 4 is a detailed vertical sectional view showing the detachable means for retaining the upper section of the foot board on the lower section of the footboard;
Figure 5 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially upon a plane passing along section line 55 of Figure 1 showing the means for attaching the head board sections of the side rails to the foot board sections of the side rails; and
Figure 6 is a perspective view similar to Figure 1 showing the present invention utilized as a youth bed with the upper section of the. foot board being removed and the foot sections of the side rails being removed.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, it will be seen that the numeral 10 generally designates the combination baby crib and youth bed of the present invention which includes a pair of longitudinal side rails 12 and 14 secured to a head board generally designated by the numeral 16 and a foot board generally designated by the numeral 18. The head board 16 includes a pair of vertical members 20 together with panel sections 22 having recessed areas 24 and a shelf 26 on the top thereof. Closure doors 28 are provided for providing compartments in the head board 16. Exteriorly of the side rails 14, the head board 16 is provided with cabinets 30 having compartments 32, a drawer 34 and a closure door 36 for a lower compartment. While this particular form of head board 16 is illustrated, it will be understood that any type head board may be utilized having simply a plain panel or one constructed of 'skeletonized framework.
The footboard, as illustrated, is provided with a pair of vertical leg members 38 engaging and supporting longitudinal rails 12 and 14 together with central panels 40. The central panels 40 and the vertical leg members 38 are provided with a separation line 42 substantially at the center portion thereof, thereby forming a lower foot board section 44 and an upper foot board section 46. On the upper edge of the upper foot board section 46 is provided a removable round member 48 which may be inserted in a slot 50 in the top of the lower section 44 of the foot board 18 when the upper section 46 is removed therefrom.
For securing the upper section 46 to the lower section 44, a pair of depending brackets 52 are provided and are attached to the upper section 46 by fasteners 54. Projecting fastening members 56 are provided on the lower section 44 and wing nuts '58 are provided for selectively retaining the bracket 52 in the undercut portion 60. provided therefor on the bottom section 44. It will be seen that the bracket 52 is provided with an inwardly extending notch 62 from the bottom edge thereof for slidable. engagement over the stationary fastening members 56 whereby the section 46 may be moved by a vertical movement thereof. Also, it is noted that the dividing .line 42 where it intersects and cuts the members 38 is downwardly sloped for providing smooth upper surfaces to the bottom section 44.
The foot board 18 and the head board 16 are provided on the corner members 20 and 38, respectively, with an inwardly projecting bracket 64 having an aperture therein for receiving the terminal end of an elongated vertical guide rod 66 having a right angular horizontal end portion 68 at its upper end secured to the members 20 and 38., respectively. Secured to the upper end of the brackets 64 is a compression coil spring 70 having an abutment washer 72. on the .upper end thereof. Slidably positioned on each longitudinally aligned pair of guide rods 66 is a side. rail 74 in the'form of askeletonized framework. The framework is provided with a plurality of vertical members 76 joined together by sectional upper and lower rails 78. that are joined together at substantially their centers by diagonal lines of division 80 and fastening members 82 secured to one of the members and projecting through the. other together with wing nuts 84 for securing the sectional rails 78 inassembled position. The upper of the rails 78 is provided with a pivotal link 86 bridging the line of division 80 and secured at one end by pin 88, and removably attached at its other end by fastening means 90, thereby forming a reinforcement for the upper rails 78. The rails 78 are provided with apertures which slidably receive the guide rods 66 for vertical movement thereon. The abutment washer 72 and the spring 70 form a cushion for the side rail 74 when it reaches its lowermost position.
When the side rail 74 is in its uppermost position, as illustrated in Figure 1, an abutment member 92 that is hingedly connected to each of the side rails 12 and 14 by hinge means 94 is pivoted outwardly and is provided with a fastening member 96 which engages the lower rail 78 thereby retaining the side rail 74 rigidly in its uppermost position. When it is desired to lower the side rail 74, it is necessary to pivot the abutment 72 back into the notch formed therefor in the side rails 12 and 14, respectively.
It will be understood that allcorners of the device are rounded for providing a safe combination crib and youth bed for children.
Transverse supporting members 98 are provided for supporting a mattress 100 on the upper surface of the frame rails 12 and 14 and the mattress 100 may be of any conventional construction. Further, feet 102 may be provided at the bottom end of each of the corner members 20 and 38 respectively for providing supports for the device.
When it is desired to change the baby crib, as illustrated in Figure 1, to a youth bed, as illustrated in Figure 6, it is necessary to remove the upper section 46 of the foot board 18 by loosening the fastener wing nuts 58 which will permit vertical detachment of the upper section 46. The guide rods 66 will move upwardly and be detached from the bracket 64 whereby the upper section of the foot board is then removed. The round member 48 is detached from the upper edge of the upper section 46 and attached to the upper edge of the lower section 44 and the foot section of the side rails 74 are detached by removing the wing nuts 84, thereby permitting the foot sections of the side rails 74 to be removed along the dividing line 80. The head sections of the side rails 74 are then moved upwardly, thereby permitting the abutment 92 to be pivoted inwardly to a position flush with the side rails 12 and 14 which will permit the head sections of the side rails 74 to be moved downwardly until the lower edge thereof engages the abutment washer 72 on the spring 70, substantially as illustrated in Figure 6, after which the head sections of the side rails 74 may be rigidly secured to the frame 12 by utilizing fastening screws 79.
The mattress 100 and the supporting members 98 may be vertically adjusted by the use of a flexible chain 97 attached at one end to the supporting members 98. A bracket 99 having a plurality of spaced hoooks 101 thereon are secured to each vertical leg member 20 and 38 for supporting the chains and supporting members in vertically adjusted positions. The brackets 99 on the vertical leg members 38 are provided with a notch 103 in the lower end thereof for detachable engagement with a headed fastener 105 on the lower portions of the leg members 38 for permitting detachment of the upper panel 46.
Also, the side rails 74 may be lowered when the device is constructed as a crib, as illustrated in Figure 1, by first lifting the side rails 74 upwardly and then pivoting the abutment member 92 upwardly into the notch provided therefor in the side rails 12 and 14.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the appended claims.
