Be it known that I, HENRY R. BoBINsoN, of Golden, in the county of Jefferson and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Im proved flame-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to fasteners particularly adapted to secure the lower ends of hames to the collar of a draft-animal, but applicable as a saddle-girth fastener, or for other analogous uses.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts of the fastener, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a front perspective View of the lower end parts of a pair of hames with my improved fastener applied thereto, and as the fastener appears when unfastened; and Fig. 2 is a front view showing the hames fastened and representing the fastener in longitudinal sectional elevation.

The fastener consists of three parts-a barplate, A, a hook-plate, B, and a locking and releasing lever, G. The bar-plate A has at its one end an eye, a, which is engaged pivotally with the eye or loop d of the left hame-bar, D, (facing the horse,) and the hook-plate B has at one end an eye, I), which pivotally engages an eye or loop, 6, of the right hame-bar, E. As seen best in Fig. 1, the plate A consists, mainly, of opposite side bars, a a, connected by cross-bars a spaced about one-half inch (more or less) apart, and at the outer or free end of the plate A its side bars are extended downward or outward to form cheek-pieces a which act as guides to and at the opposite edges of the hook-plate B,which, as shown, is about as wide as the space between the side bars, co a, of the plate A. The plate B is provided at its outer portion with the central lengthwise slot, 1), and the end of the plate is bent upward and over to form a hook, b-',which is adapted to engage any one of the cross-bars a of the plate A, and the hook has-at its extremity a cross-bar, 72 which is adapted to be engaged by the hook 0 of the lever O,while the opposite hook, c, of the lever engages one of the cross-bars a of the bar-plate A. The lever O is of proper width to slide or move freely in the slot b of the hookplate B, and projecting pins or studs 0 at the opposite edges of the lever at both its ends prevent accidental displacement of the lever from the hook-plate. At the base or throat of the hook c of the lever 0 there is a groove, 0 made across the lever, so as to more completely inclose or retain a cross-bar, a, of plate A at the base or throat of the hook a when the lever is swung on said bar o to disengage the hook b of plate B from the bar, as presently explained.

The operation is as follows: After the hames have been placed on the collar of the horse, the hook-plate B and lever G will be held in positions relatively to each other, about as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2,with the end cross-bar, b of the hook I) resting on the side 0 of the lever O, and the hook a will be engaged with the proper cross-bar a" of plate A, and as the lever is swung over or forward in the direction of the arrow 1 the hook-plate B will be drawn inward as the cross-bar b rides along the face 0 of the lever to the position shown in Fig. 1, and by continuing the movement of the lever until its face 0 lies flat against the plate A, as in Fig. 2, the hames will be drawn up tightly on the collar, and the cross-bar of the hook I) of plate B will slip into the hook c of the lever C, while the hook c and notch c" engage the cross-bar a of plate A, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. It is evident that by the pressure of the crossbar b on the hook c, the hook c of lever 0 will be held securely on the crossbar a and the greater the strain the more snugly will the lever C be held to the cross-bar a and against the plate A, so that the fastener cannot be loosened to remove hames until the lever O is swung backward on the crossbar a as a fulcrum, which causes the hook c of the lever to push back the hook I) of plate B by bearing on its cross-bar I) with a powerful leverage, and when the hook is swung down to the position shown in Fig. 1, the plate B may be drawn back sufficiently as the crossbar b of the hook r00 whichever of the series of cross-bars at of the plate A be engaged by the hook 0' of the lever C, hence the fastener, as shown, has a wide range of expansibility or lengthwise adjustment; but the plate A may be made with but a single cross-bar a for any special use.

Although I have particularly described the fastener as applied to hames, it is obvious that it may be applied at the opposite ends of a rope, chain, or saddle-girth to form an adjustable and secure fastening which it is desirable to release or loosen very easily and quickly.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A fastener comprising a plate, A, provided with one or more crossbars, a", and a plate, B, provided with a slot, b, and hook b N, and said plates A B adapted to be held to the opposite hame-bars or parts to be secured, and a lever, 0, provided with a hook, 0, adapted to engage a cross-bar, a", of plate A, and a hook, 0, adapted to lock against the hook I) of plate B, substantially as herein set forth.

2. In a fastener comprising a plate, A, provided with one or more cross-bars, a a plate. B, provided with a slot, 1), and hook I) I), and said plates A B adapted to be held to the opposite hame-bars or parts to be secured, and a lever, 0, provided with a hook, 0, adapted to engage a cross-bar, a of plate A, and a hook, 0, adapted to lock against the hook b of plate B, said lever 0 having retaining pins or lugs c -at the ends, substantially as herein set forth. 4o
