UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. HANVKINS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DEODORIZING AND DISINFECTING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,645, dated November 3, 1885.
Application filed June 10, 1885. Serial No.1(i8,274. (No IDOdGLl To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. HAWKINS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Deodorizing and Disinfecting Apparatus, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an apparatus for mixing and discharging liquid deodorizing or disinfecting material in measured quantities into waste-pipes, wash-basins, sinks, waterclosets, urinals, &c.-; and the invention consists, principally, of a measuring device connected with two tanks or chambers, in which are placed, respectively, water and undiluted deodorizing or disinfecting material, the lat ter to be mixed or diluted with the water in the measuring device preparatory to being dispensed thereby into the receptacle or object to be deodorized or disinfected.
The invention also consists in the construc tion, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a broken plan view of my invention, the measuringcock being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same on the line x 00 of Fig. 1, showing also means for operating the measuring device; and Fig. 3 is a reduced sectional elevation showing my invention applied to a washbasin and the waste-pipe thereof.
A B represent two tanks, to which may be supplied, respectively, water and disinfecting material in solution. The tanks A and B are connected with the measuring device 0, the former by the pipe a, the latter by the pipe I), that is smaller than the pipe a, so that the supply of disinfecting-liquid to the measuring device 0 will be slower than that of thewater. In place of pipes a 1), different in size, cocks in pipes of equal diameters may be used for regulating the two supplies to the measuring device O.
The measuring device 0 in this instance is composed of the cylindrical case or shell e, having two inlet-ports, d d, and one outlet port, d, and the hollow cylindrical valve 6,
that fits in the shell or case e, but may be turned freely therein by the arm or lever f, attached to one end of the valve 6'. as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The hollow valve 0 is, in practice, formed with two inlet-ports, 9, only one, however, being here shown, and with one outlet-port, g, theformer to receive theliquid from tanks A B, when thevalve is turned to cause them to coincide with the ports d d, and the latter to discharge the liquid from the de vice when the valve is turned to cause portg to coincide with the discharge-port d. WVhile the valve 6 is in the latter discharge position, a solid portion of the valve closes the inletports dd, and while in the former position a solid portion of the valve closes the outletport (1", as will be understood from Fig. 2. The valve e is also formed with a vent-opening, 9 which is arranged to coincide with the vent-opening h in casing 6 when ports 9 are in line with the inlet-ports d, so that airin the valve 6' will not interfere with the filling of the valve from the tanks A B. One of the ports g is arranged to coincide with the vent h when the port 5 is line with the discharge-port d, so a vacuum will not be formed in the valve 6 at the time of discharge.
The apparatus may be applied in various situations with suitable attachments or connections for conveniently raising and lowering, automatically or otherwise, the arm or lever f at intervals. \Vhen applied to a wash basin, F, by a pipe, G, I attach to the arm or lever f for operating it and the valve 6 the connected rods t and j, the latter of which is provided at its upper end with a handle, j, and at the lower end with the weightj so that by grasping and lifting the handle the valve e will be turned and emptied, and the weightj at the same time elevated to close the valve when the handle j is released.
In place of a disinfecting material placed in the tank B,'as above stated, any deodorizing material may be used, which in like manner will be dispensed in measured and diluted quantities to produce the best results with economy in the use of material.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
6; having ports gg, and leverf, for operating the valve 6, substantially as described.
4. The shell 6, connected by pipe G to the waste-pipe F or other object to be disinfected, and by pipes a b to the chambers A B, the valve 6, and the lever f, connected thereto for operating the valve, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
