(Cl. 118-316) This invention relates to an automatic apparatus for filling with an adhesive the seams and stitching perforations, which are produced during the sewing of two pieces of a synthetic resin film together by an industrial sewing machine. In describing this invention, I have made frequent use of the expression, synthetic resin film, but it is to be understood that the term has been used such that a cloth made with a synthetic resin yarn or a synthetic resin covered yarn, a cloth covered by a synthetic resin, and the like are included in the synthetic resin film.
Heretofore, two pieces of a film are sewede up together so that two rows of stitches are made. A pipe is inserted between the two pieces and between the two rows. An adhesive is applied there through the pipe which is drawn out gradually. Corresponding to the drawing out of the pipe, pressure is applied on the outer surfaces of the two pieces so that the two pieces are bound together and the two rows of stitches are filled with the adhesive flow out of the pipe whereby an article which is water-proof along the seam may be obtained. Such a method requires a long time for operation. In addition, an incomplete seam is apt to be produced. Therefore, it is impossible to keep a film sewn as above water-proof sufficiently because of the leakage of water along such a seam.
One object of this invention is to provide an apparatus in which two pieces of a film may be bound so as to obtain a water-proof complete seam between the two pieces.
Another object of this invention is to provide an apparatus in which two pieces of a film may be bound so as to obtain a more well-made seam between the two pieces.
Still another object of this invention is to provide an apparatus in which two pieces of a film may be bound more easily and more inexpensively.
Briefly stated in accordance with one aspect of this invention, there is provided an automatic apparatus for filling seam, particularly stitching perforations, with an adhesive for sewing up two pieces of a synthetic resin film together by an industrial sewing 'machine, which comprises a liquid adhesive applying means and a guiding means. The liquid adhesive applying means comprises a reservoir for storing the liquid adhesive and a forked pipe for taking it out of the reservoir. The guiding means comprises two folded back metal plates. The metal plates are arranged oppositely with each other and overlappingly, on the face plate of the sewing machine in such a manner that each branch of the forked pipe is terminated inside the folded plate so as to jet the'liquid adhesive on the margin of the piece when the margin is guided along the fold. When the two pieces of the film are bound together by using the apparatus in accordance with this invention, the liquid adhesive is applied on each upper surface of the two pieces, subsequently in a moment the two pieces are sewed together, and further then in a moment, they are pressed against each other so that the adhesive is penetrated into the stitching perforations and spread throughout the bound area resulting in obtaining a completely bound and water-proof seam.
The invention will be better understood and other objects and additional advantages of the invention will become apparent upon perusal of the following description taken in connection with the drawings in which:

FIG. 3 is a perspective view similar to FIG. 1 but showing another embodiment of this invention.
Referring now to the drawings, preferred embodiments in accordance with this invention will be explained. Two guide plates 7 and 8 of a suitable metal are provided on the face plate of an industrial sewing machine 1. The guide plate 7 is fixed adjustably on the face plate by means of studs passed through slots provided in the guide plate 7 and has a folded edge 7'. The folded edge 7' is positioned so as to guide a margin 10 of a piece of the film towards the needle plate of the sewing machine, that is, the fold of the guide plate 7 is arranged in parallel with the direction of feeding the piece of the film. The guide plate 8 is also fixed adjustably on the face plate by means of studs passed through slots provided in the guide plate 8 and has a folded edge 8. The folded edge 8' is also positioned so as to guide a margin 11 of the other piece of the film towards the needle plate of the sewing machine, but the folded part of the guide plate 8 is arranged oppositely to the folded part of the guide plate 7 and somewhat turned up so as to enable one to insert the other guide plate 7 therebetween and the face plate. Thus the fold of the guide plate 8 is directed in parallel with the direction of feeding the piece of the film and also with the fold of the other guide plate 7 so that the two margins of the pieces of the film are guided along the folds in an overlapping relation towards the needle plate of the sewing machine. Each of the folds is formed by turning up the edge of the guide plates '7 and 8 along an angle of about There is provided a reservoir 2 for storing a liquid adhesive on the body of the sewing machine 1 and a forked pipe 3 which leads the adhesive towards the two guide plates 7 and 8 by gravity. The pipe 3 is forked into branches 4 and 5 and terminated at two nozzles 4' and 5 with nozzle 5 being positioned inside the folded edge 8 of guide plate 8 so as to jet the the liquid adhesive on the upper surface of the margins of the two pieces, respectively. By virtue of the folded guide plates 7 and 8, the liquid adhesive is prevented from scattering excessively farther. The two margins 10 and 11 of the pieces of the film are directed to the stitching 'points under the needles 12 and 12' which carry threads 14 and 13, and stitched up there in a conventional manner before the liquid adhesive evaporates which has been spread on the margins. Just after the stitching operation, the .sewed margins are pressed by a pressing roller 15 provided bhind the needles 12 and 12' so as to bind the two margins 10 and 11 together with each other more completely by virtue of the further spread, further penetrated liquid adhesive. The pressing roller 15 functions also as the feeding means for the pieces in the direction shown by an arrow in FIG. 1.
The quantity of the liquid adhesive is adjusted manually by means of an adjusting means 6 provided intermediate the pipe 3.
In FIG. 3 another embodiment of this invention is illustrated, in which the manually operating adjusting means is replaced by an automatic feeding means for the liquid adhesive. The automatic feeding means comprises a pump having a piston rod 16 extending into the reservoir 2 through a cover thereof. The tension regulator has a shaft mounted for rotation about an axis perpendicular to the plane of wheel 18. A shaft 17 mounted substantially perpendicular to the tension regulator shaft is coupled thereto by means of a beveled gear arrangement (not shown). An elliptical cam 19 is fixedly mounted at the end of shaft 17 whereby cam 19 is caused to rotate in synchronism with the tension regulator shaft.
Reservoir 2 includes a pump 20 of the reciprocating piston type well known in the art, for pumping the liquid adhesive from resevoir 2 through pipe 3, to be fed to margins and 11 as described herein above. Pump 20 includes reciprocating piston 16, which is spring mounted such that it is urged upwardly, to bring the flat surface head portion 21 in flush abutment with the cam surface 22 of cam 19. Thus, as the thread tension regulator shaft is driven, cam surface 22 rides on the flat surface of head portion 21 causing piston 16 to reciprocate vertically in synchronism with the speed of the sewing operation as determined by the thread tension regulator. Accordingly, the adhesive is fed through pipe 3 at a rate determined by the speed of the sewing operation,
While particular embodiments, of this invention have been illustrated and described, mosifications thereof will readily occur to those skilled in the art. It should be understood there-fore that the invention is not limited to the particular arrangements disclosed but that the appended claims are intended to cover all modifications which do not depart from the true spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim is: V
1. An automatic apparatus for filling with an adhesive, the seams and stitching perforations, produced by the operation of sewing up two pieces of a synthetic resin film together by an industrial sewing machine, comprising a guiding means and a liquid adhesive applying means, said guiding means comprising two folded back metal guide plates arranged on the face plate of said sewing machine in such a manner that said folds are arranged in parallel with the direction of feeding said pieces and the folded parts of said two guide plates overlap each other and are arranged oppositely to each other, and said liquid adhesive applying means comprising a reservoir for storing said liquid adhesive, a forked pipe for taking itout of said reservoir, each branch of said forked pipe being terminated inside a respective folded plate so as to jet said liquid adhesive on such a part of each piece as to be seamed when each piece is fed along its respective fold, and manual ad-l justing means for said liquid adhesive provided on an inter? mediate portion of said pipe to control the feed thereof;
2. An automatic apparatus for filling with an adhesive,:
the seams and stitching perforations, produced by the operation of sewing up two pieces of a synthetic resin film together by an industrial sewing machine,vcomprising a guiding means and a liquid adhesive applying means,
said guiding means comprising two folded back metal it out of said reservoir, each 'branch of said forked pipe being terminated inside a respective folded plate so as to jet said liquid adhesive on such a part of each piece as to be seamed when each piece is fed along its respective fold, and an automatic feeding means for said liquid ads hesive including a piston rod which is vertically reciprocated in said reservoir and driven by a shaft of a thread tension regulator of said sewing machine.

Claims (1)

1. AN AUTOMATIC APPARATUS FOR FILLING WITH AN ADHESIVE, THE SEAMS AND STITCHING PERFORATIONS, PRODUCED BY THE OPERATION OF SEWING UP TWO PIECES OF A SYNTHETIC RESIN FILM TOGETHER BY AN INDUSTRIAL SEWING MACHINE, COMPRISING A GUIDING MEANS AND A LIQUID ADHESIVE APPLYING MEANS, SAID GUIDING MEANS COMPRISING TWO FOLDED BACK METAL GUIDE PLATES ARRANGED ON THE FACE PLATE OF SAID SEWING MACHINES IN SUCH A MANNER THAT SAID FOLDS ARE ARRANGED IN PARALLEL WITH THE DIRECTION OF FEEDING SAID PIECES AND THE FOLDED PARTS OF SAID TWO GUIDE PLATES OVERLAP EACH OTHER AND ARE ARRANGED OPPOSITELY TO EACH OTHER, AND SAID LIQUID ADHESIVE APPLYING MEANS COMPRISING A RESERVOIR FOR STORING SAID LIQUID ADHESIVE, A FORKED PIPE FOR TAKING IT OUT OF SAID RESERVOIR, EACH BRANCH OF SAID FORKED PIPE BEING TERMINATED INSIDE A RESPECTIVE FOLDED PLATE SO AS TO JET SAID LIQUID ADHESIVE ON SUCH A PART OF EACH PIECE AS TO BE SEAMED WHEN EACH PIECE IS FED ALONG ITS RESPECTIVE FOLD, AND MANUAL ADJUSTING MEANS FOR SAID LIQUID ADHESIVE PROVIDED ON AN INTERMEDIATE PORTION OF SAID PIPE TO CONTROL THE FEED THEREOF.
