Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a dust removing ar rangement for circular knitting machines, and more particularly to apparatus for preventing dust developed by thread passing through thread guides at the top of the knitting machine to settle in the working area of the knitting machine.
  • Circular knitting machines have a plurality of knitting stations arranged around the circumference of the ma chine. At each knitting station, a thread package is mounted on a spindle, and the thread is guided upwards to a support on which a number of thread guides corresponding to the number of knitting stations are mounted. The thread passes through the thread guides and then downwardly again to thread transporting rollers, at least one of which is provided at each knitting station of the circular knitting machine.
  • the thread guides on top of the machine are part of electric thread breakage indicators which may indicate a thread breakage or stop the machine when one of the threads is broken, or when the thread supply on the respective spindle is exhausted.
  • Another object of the invention is to blow air outwardly from the center of a circular row of thread guides on top of the machine so that dust produced by threads passing through the thread guides is blown in outward direction away from the machine and cannot settle on the same.
  • Another object of the invention is to place a blower which blows air in tangential directions along the entire periphery thereof at the center of the circle of thread guides on top of the circular knitting machine, so that the air stream produced by the blower reaches simultaneously all thread guides.
  • Another object of the invention is to mount the motor of the blower in a dust proof inner chamber located within the annular row of thread guides and thread breakage indicators.
  • one embodiment of the invention comprises a plurality of thread guides arranged in a circle, and means at the center of the circle for blowing air outwardly past all thread guides and beyond the same, so that dust produced by threads passing through the thread guides is blown away from the machine in outward directions and cannot settle at the working areas of the machine.
  • housing means are mounted on an upwardly projecting support on top of the machine, and include an inner annular wall forming an inner chamber for a ice tangentially operating blower, and an outer wall forming an annular chamber surrounding the inner chamber and supporting a plurality of thread guides which outwardly project from the wall and are circumferentially spaced from each other. Both walls are formed with circumferentially spaced openings so that air passes from the inner chamber into the outer annular chamber and through the openings in the same.
  • the air is guided by the openings, and preferably also by suitably shaped wall portion of the housing toward the outwardly projecting thread guides and beyond the same in outward directions so that dust blown off the thread guides is carried away from the center of the machine and cannot settle on the Working areas of the same.
  • the inner chamber has a closed chamber portion in which the motor of the blower is located, and another chamber portion provided with an axial inlet, preferably covered by a filter, so that the rotor of the blower sucks the air in in axial direction and blows the air outwardly in tangential directions through the openings in the inner wall.
  • the outer wall preferably forms an annular gap with the inner wall, and part of the air blown into the annular chamber passes below a free annular edge of the outer wall where the thread guides are mounted so that also the inner portions of the thread guides are passed by air streams.
  • FIG. 1 is a fragmentary elevation illustrating the top of a circular knitting machine
  • FIG. 2 is a fragmentary axial sectional view taken along line XX in FIG. 1 and illustrating an embodiment of the invention with which the knitting machine of FIG. 1 is provided.
  • a housing 16 is located at the top of a circular knitting machine, and carries a plurality of thread trans porting rollers 17 spaced about the circumference thereof.
  • the spacing between the transporting rollers 17 corresponds to the circumferential spacing of the knitting stations of the machine and a thread 67 is transported by each transporting roller 17 toward the needles which are located at the respective knitting stations.
  • a thread guide 17a is mounted adjacent each thread transporting roller 17.
  • Housing 16 carries a corresponding number of out wardly projecting supporting rods 18 on which spindles carrying thread packages 61 are mounted. Each thread package 61 supplies the thread required at the respective knitting station.
  • a central post 21 upwardly projecting along the main axis XX of the machine, is provided.
  • a ring 63 has a hub portion secured to post 21, and a plurality of radially projecting circumferentially spaced supporting rods 64 at whose outer ends thread guides 65 are mounted.
  • a housing 62 is mounted on the top of post 21 and has circumferentially spaced openings 71.
  • a plurality of thread guides 66 are mounted circumferentially spaced from each other and outwardly projecting from an annular outer wall of housing 62, one thread guide 66 being associated with each knitting station, and correspondingly with each thread package 61 and transporting roller 17.
  • a thread supplied by package 61 passes through a thread guide 65, upwardly toward a thread guide 66 and then down again to a thread guide 17a and to a transporting roller 17.
  • Supporting post 21 is shown broken off in FIG. 1 and actually the post is much longer in vertical direction so that the slant of the thread portion between each thread guide 66 and each thread guide 17a is much steeper than illustrated.
  • Post 21 is hollow and mechanical force transmitting linkages and electric cables are guided through the interior of post 21 into housing 62.
  • housing 62 The construction of housing 62 is best seen in FIG. 2.
  • An inner housing 68 is mounted on top of post 21 and includes an annular wall 68a, a bottom wall secured to post 21, a filter plate 72, and a transverse wall 68a dividing the inner chamber 6817 into a lower chamber portion and an upper chamber portion.
  • the rotor 690 of a tangential blower is located in the upper chamber portion, and the motor 69a is connected to rotor 690 by a shaft located in a bearing'passing through a central opening in the intermediate wall 68a.
  • a flange outwardly projecting from the bearing is secured by screws to the intermediate wall filia' so that the blower and its motor are supported within the inner housing 68.
  • the flange construction seals the lower chamber portion from the upper chamber portion.
  • the blower has no outer housing so that the rotor 69 draws air in axial direction through the filter 72 and blows the air outwardly in tangential direction along the entire outer periphery thereof.
  • the annular inner wall 68a has a plurality of circumferentially spaced openings or slots 70 communicating with the inner chamber portion surrounding rotor 69c.
  • An outer annular wall 680 surrounds the inner annular wall 68a and is spaced from the same.
  • a plurality of circumferentially spaced thread guides, forming port of thread breakage indicating devices, are mounted at the lower annular free edge of wall 680, outwardly projecting from the same in radial directions.
  • An annular gap is formeed between the inner annular wall 68a and the lower annular edge of the outer annular wall 68c.
  • a top wall 68d extends between the upper annular edges of wall 68a and 680 and forms an annular chamber 74 with walls 68a and 680.
