- the electromagnetic means used for this purpose must have substantial dimensions since a minimum cross section of the magnetic core, and of the windings is required to assure an absolutely reliable operation of the coupling elements. Since each electromagnetic means is substantially wider than the correlated coupling element and type lever action, it is not convenient to arrange all electromagnetic means in one row. In known constructions, the electromagnetic means are arranged in at least two rows and staggered to each other. This construction has disadvantages, inasmuch as the rows of electromagnetic means have to be arranged along an arc with armatures moving in radial direction corresponding to the arc of the type levers. A construction of this type is disclosed in the US. Patent No. 1,520,478 which discloses eight rows of electromagnetic means.
