Description

Dec. 20, 1966 s, PlKE 3,292,839
BOX SPOUT Filed Nov. 25, 1964 United States Patent 3,292,839 BOX SPOUT Sophia E. Pike, 3705 Northern Pike, Mom-oeville, Pa. 15146 Filed Nov. 25, 1964, Ser. No. 413,933 1 Claim. (Cl. 229-7) This invention relates to pouring attachments for boxes and the like.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a box pouring spout which may be easily opened for pouring the contents from the box and will be attached to the pleated sides of the box lining at the upper extremity of the box at one end, to allow the contents to be poured easily from the box.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a box spout which may be opened conveniently by means of a plurality of perforations which may be broken by hand.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a box spout which will be formed partially, when open, by the lining of the interior of the box which will form a web-like structure to form sides of the spout.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a box pouring spout of the above mentioned type which will have upper tab means secured to the spout panel which will allow closing the spout when desired to keep the contents of the box intact and unexposed.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a box pouring spout bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and eflicient in operation and use.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the present invention shown before being opened;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the invention shown in the full open position; and
FIGURE 3 is a cross sectional view of the invention shown prior to opening.
Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a box spout made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a panel 12 of rectangular configuration which may be bent outwardly along a bend line 14 on the end of box 16. Box panel 12 forming the major portion of the spout 10 is opened by means of a plurality of perforations 18 extending from the upper end corner down to the bend line 14 which will thus define an opening for emptying the contents from box 16. Box panel 12 is provided with a tab 20 of L-shaped cross sectional configuration which is secured on the inside of box 16 to panel 12. Tab 20 is fixedly secured to panel 12 at its upper extremity and is made of plastic or other suitable material which may be easily reinserted into box 16 for closing box 16. Tab 20 abuts with the upper portion of lining 24 of the box 16 beneath top 22 of box 16 and lining 24 is provided with a plurality of pleats 26 which form web-like sides for spout 10 to prevent the spilling of the contents of box 16 from the sides of spout 10.
In use, perforations 18 are broken and the finger is inserted along the tab 20 which is grasped and pulled outwardly. When box panel 12 is pulled outwardly by means of tab 20, the pleats 26 of the lining 24 spread out to form the side walls of spout 10, whereupon the contents of box 16 may be easily poured from within. In order to close box spout 10, panel 12 is urged inwardly of the opening, and the tab 20 is urged inwardly to close off the box until it is used again.
It shall be recognized that the pleats 26 of lining 24 are secured to box panel 12 at its sides, and the sides of box panel 12 overhang the pleats 26 lining 24, allowing pleats 26 not to rupture when closing spout 10.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be Within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claim.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patents of the United States is:
A box spout for container comprising, in combination, a rectangular panel, a L-shaped cross-sectional oonfigurated tab member secured to the upper extremity of the inside portion of said panel, thereby providing lip means for grasping and opening said spout and closing when said spout is not in use, an area of lining secured beneath the top portion of said box, the outer most portion of said tab member adapted to abut the edge of said lining when said spout is in a closed position, the perpendicularly extending side of lining forming foldable web-like pleats, the side portions of said panel secured to said pleats for preventing the spilling of the contents of said box from the sides of said spout, the outside edges are perforated by a plurality of perforations to allow manual rupturing of the edges of said spout in order to pull out said panel, the lower extremity of said panel is provided with a bend line which is in parallel with the upper corner defining the opening from which the contents of said box are poured and the side perforations of said panel extend down to said bend line to prevent further rupturing and said pleats formed in such a manner as to allow to fold easily when said panel is pushed into the box for closing said spout.
