HYDRANT AND PLUG.
.JPEUIFIQATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,983, dated October 27, 1885.
Application filed March 14, 1885. Serial No. 158,552. (ModeL) a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hydrants, of which the following is a specification, reference .being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in hydrants; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, andlparticularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectional'view of a hydrant embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same on the line 00 a; of Fig. 1.
A represents an inclosing-casehaving an inverted conical central opening, in which is placed a turning plug or valve, B. This valve is secured in the case by an annular interiorlythreaded flanged ring, 0, that is screwed to the upper threaded end of the case. A vertical central opening is made through the valve 13, and through this opening passes a vertical pipe, D. A packingbox, b, is located in the upper portion of the valve, and in the luWGl end of the case is made a circular recess to receive packing a, which is compressed by the bottom E, that has an annular interiorlythreaded vertical flange on its upper side for securing the bottom to the lower threaded end of the case A.
To the upper side of the valve B, near the outer edge thereof, is secured a vertical stand ard, b, which has a vertical slot, b
To the outer side of the case A is secured a vertical standard, a, which has a slot, to", that extends obliquely across the standard a from the lower to the upper end thereof.
Thepipe D has an opening, d, near its lower end, and a projecting pin or arm, d, near its upper end, that passes through the slots 22' and a An inlet-pipe, F, is connected to the case A, and an opening, b is made through the valve B, which, when the pipe D is drawn upwardly, registers with the pipe F and with the opening d, and thereby the Water from the pipe F can freely flow up through the pipe D.
When the pipe D is lowered, the pin d is caused by the slot a to partially rotate the pipe D, and the standard 1) causes the valve B to also partly rotate, which outs offcommunication between the pipe D and the pipe F.
To the lower side of the bottom E is secured a cylinder, G, and to the lower end of the pipe D is secured a piston, II, that works in the cylinder.
NVhen pipe D is raised, the piston l-I forces the water out of the pipe D, and when said pipe is lowered the water remaining in it is received in the cylinder, and thus danger of the water freezing in the pipe is avoided.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination of the case having the obliquely-slotted standard and an inlet, the turning valve located in the case and having the vertically slotted standard, and the vertical pipe passing through the valve and having a projecting pin that works in the slots, and an opening, 02, whereby, when the pipe is raised, the valve will be partially rotated in the case, and the opening d in the pipe will register with the inlet-opening in the case and the opening in the turning valve, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE A. WARNER.
Vitnesses:
MATILDA GASTON, MARY STURGUs.
