SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,916, dated Qctober 27, 1885.

Application filed July 11, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOSEPH A. BRYAN and JAMns B. FIELDING, citizens of the United States, residing at Prescott, in the county of Nevada andState of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oattle- Cars; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Our invention has relation to cattle-cars; and it consists of a new and improved arrangement for feeding cattle while in transit.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the inside of the car with our invention attached. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the roof. Fig. 3 is an end view of the roof. Fig. A is a detail View of Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the troughs. Fig. 6 is an end view of one of the troughs.

Our invention is described as follows:

The entire top of the car is made so as to form a watertank, 1, and is so constructed as to be removed at pleasure, and has an opening, 2, at the top to admit the water, and one or more openings, 3, on the side,to which a hose may be attached to convey the water to any part of the car. It also has a horizontal flange on its front end, which fits under the front cross-beam of the car, and perpendicular flanges on the sides and rear end, which fit between the top, side, and rear beams of the car and hold the tank in positio-n.

Our troughs 4 are made in five pieces, and hinged together and secured by clasps 5, as shown in Figs. 1, 4, and 5. The bottom a has its edges a a beveled. are hinged on their inner face to the inner face of one of the sides,b,bya hinge, d, which allows the end to fold in close to the said side. A clasp, 5, is hinged to the upper edge of one of the sides, and bent at its loose end to clasp the other side of the trough when the same is closed. These troughs are arranged on the inside of the car, as may be seen in Fig. 1, and are held in position by means of guides 12, to which the top leaf of the trough is held by means of an eye, 6, secured in the back part of the same. raised or lowered by means of cord 13, Winding shaft 14, beveled gearing 15, ratchet wheel, foot-dog, and hand-wheel 16, the operation of which needs no description. These troughs may also be attached to the outside of the ear, in which case they are held in position by means of guards, and are drawn up and let down by means of cords, winding-shaft, ratchet-wheel, dog, and spring.

WVe do notin this application claim the mech anism for attaching these troughs to the outside of the car, nor the mechanism for winding up and down, as the same is claimed in our application filed June 15, 1885, Serial No. 168,708, stock-cars.

Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with a cattle-car for watering and feeding stock, the combination of the troughs 4, having the bottom a, the leaves or sides b If, ends d, and clasps 5, eyes 6, secured in either end, one near the upper edge and the other near the lower edge on the back of the top leaf, 1), guides 12, secured perpendicularly in said car and running through said eyes, cords 13, their lower ends attached to the upper edge of said top leaf, b, and their upper ends to the winding-shaft 14, which is operated by the beveled gearing 15 and hand-wheel 16, substantially as shownand described.
