SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,895l dated October 20, 1885.

Be it known that l, ANTON KULICH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bureau-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

rlhis invention relates to an improved bureau-bed, which can be readily changed from a bureau to a bed and back again to a bureau, and which serves also as a storage-receptacle for the bed-clothes, pillows, Src., the whole being arranged in a cheap, compact, and durable manner.

The invention consists of a casing having side walls, transverse front and rear panels, a front wall hinged to the front panel,and atop panel hinged to the front wall. To the inner side of the hinged front wall is attached the middle bed-section, the head-section being hinged by side sir-aps and links to iixed inclined straps ofthe front wall, so as to be supported in inclined position on the middle section when the sections are arranged as a bed, and on the rear panel of the casing when the sections are folded up. A foot-section having hinged legs is hinged to the opposite end of the middle section, and provided at the under side with a fixed angle-iron that serves as a stop or abutment for the top panel when the same is used as a support for the middle section of the bed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front elevation of my improved bureau-bed, showing it in folded-up position. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same on line w w, Fig. 4, showing it eX- tended into a bed. Fig. et is a plan of Fig. 3, with parts broken away; and Fig. 5 are details showing the hinge-connection of the headsection with the middle section of the bed.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the casing of my improved bureau-bed, which casing is made of two upright side walls, A', that are connected at their lower parts by a bottom, a, a front panel, a', and a rear panel, a2, and at the upper part by a transverse top piece, a3, which latter is of somewhat smaller width than half the width of the side walls A.

To the front panel, a', of the casing A is hinged a movable panel, A2, which fornis,wi th the panel a', the front wall of the casing A, and which serves also as a support for the middle section of the bed. The panels a and A2 are provided at the outside with knobs and key-holes in imitation of a bureau.

To the upper edge of thehinged front pan l, A2, is hinged atop panel, A3, which, together with the top piece, cl3, forms the top of the bureau-bed when the same is folded up as a bureau.

To the inside of the hinged front panel, A2, is attached, by angle-irons d d, or otherwise, the upholstered middle section, B, of the bed, which middle section is of nearly the same size as the hinged front panel, and provided at the end next to the casing A with a headsection, B, which is hinged by side straps e e and pivot-links e2 to inclined side straps e e', attached to the frame of the middle section and to the panel A2, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3. The side straps e and c are provided with stop-plates e3 at their adjoining edges, which stop-plates abut against each other when the front panel, A2, and section B are lowered, so as to hold, together with the pivot-links e2, the head-section B in an inclined position, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. When the bureau-bed is closed, the head-section B assumes a position at right angles to the middle section, B, and rests on the rear panel, a2, of the casing A, as shown in Fig. 2.

To the opposite end of the middle section, B, is hinged an upholstered footsectio'n, B2, which is provided at its outer end with a hinged foot-board, f, and hinged legs f The foot-board f and legs f are folded, respectively, on the top and bottom-of the foot-section B2, which latter is again folded over the middle section, B, when the bed is to be folded up.

To the under side of the frame of thel footsection B2 is attached a downwardly-extending angleiron, g, which serves as a stop or abutment for the top panel, A3, when the same has been placed in a verticalposition, so as t0 support the middle and foot sections, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

Below the rear top piece, as, may loe arranged drawers h, as shown in the drawings, and the same may be used as a support for a IOO looking-glass, book-case, or other suitable attachment, whereby the appearance of the bureau-bed is improved. The entire bureaubed may also be placed on rollers or casters when it is desired to facilitate the moving of the same.

My improved bureau-bed is operated as follows:

First. For changing it into a bed, the top panel A2 isftaken hold of and moved on its hinges in outward direction, as indicated by the arrow in Fig.' 2, until it abuts against the front panel, A2. The front panel, A2, is then loswered until it is supported by the top panel, A head section B is simultaneously raised by its hinge-connection with the middle section into inclined position, as shown in Fig. 3. The foot-section B2 is neXt turned on its hinge connection with the middle section, B, into line therewith, and then supported by the legs f of the same, as shown in Fig. 3. The bed-clothes and 4pillows are then taken from the storage-space at the lower part of the casing' A, and placed in sections B B B2. c

Second. For changing the bed into ,a bureau, the bed-clothes are rst removed and placed intothe storage receptacle at the lower part of the casing A. The foot-section B2, with its hinged foot-board and legs, is then folded up over the middle section, B, and lifted, with the front panel, A2,V into vertical position, whereby the head-section B is moved in backward direction until supported by the rear panel', a2. The top panel, A3, is then swung on its hinges into line with the top piece, a3, whereby the casing is closed at the front and top and made to present the appearance of a bureau. The bureau-bed takes up acomparatively small space, owing to its compact form, and can be easily and conveniently extended into a bed and folded up as required.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- By ,the lowering of the front wall, A2, theV position on the bed ll. The combination of a casing, A, having a xed transverse front panel, ci', and hinged front and top panels, A2 A3, a middle section, B, attached to the front panel, A2, a head-section, B', hinged by 'side straps e e to inclined side straps e e of the middle section, and a foot-section B2, hinged to the middle section, and provided with hinged supporting-legs f', substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the casing A, having a hinged front panel, A2, a hinged top panel, A5, and a iiXed rear panel, a` middle section, B, attached to the front panel, and having xed inclined side straps e e', a headsection, B', having side straps e e, pivot-links e2 for connecting said straps, and stop-plates e2, attached to said rstraps for supporting the head-section in inclined position, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of the supporting-casing having hinged front and top panels, a

-middle bed-section attached to the .front panel, a headsection hinged to the middle section, and a foot-section also hinged to the middle section, and provided with a fixed stop or abutment for the top panel, substantially as set forth.

4.. The combination of a supportingcasing having fixed front and rear panels, hinged front and top panels, and a transverse top piece, with' a middle bed-section attached to .the front panel, a head-section hinged to the middle section by pivoted straps having stop plates, and a foot-section hinged to the middle section, and provided vwith folding legs and a fixed stop or abutment, substantially as set forth.
