Description
Nov. 15, 1966 c.s.sP1NNEY MATTRESS HANDLES Filed Dec. 5, 1965 N P'M. am JT United States Patent C 3,285,404 MATTRESS HANDLES Clayton S. Spinney, Greenland, N.H., assignor to The Morley Company, Portsmouth, N.H., a corporation of Maine Filed Dec. 5, 1963, Ser. No. 328,253 1 Claim. (Cl. 20G-56) This invention relates to mattress handles of the type disclosed in the patents to Bechiik 2,355,200 (Re. 23,500) and Poupitch 2,876,465 which comprise a ilat plastic strap with enlarged ends and lmeans for attaching the ends to a strip of mattress covering material. More particularly it relates to handles adapted to be attached to such strips by machines such as disclosed in my Patent 3,064,264.
Objects of the invention are to produce the handles in sets which can be manufactured more conveniently, which can be handled more expeditiously and which can be applied more expeditiously by the aforesaid machine.
This invention involves a set of mattress handles comprising a plurality of parallel straps having their opposite sides in parallel planes and having spaces between their opposed edges, with necks bridging said spaces to hold the straps in parallelism, the necks being disposed between said planes land being severable to separate the handles from each other. Preferably the straps have enlarged ends and the necks interconnect said ends. In the preferred embodiment the straps and necks comprise a unitary piece of plastic material.
For the purpose of illustration a typical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which FIG. 1 is a plan View of a set of mattress handles;
FIG. 2 is an end view of the set;
FIG. 3 is a plan View of the lower part of a mold for making the sets of handles; and
FIG. 4 is a section of the complete mold taken on the line 4--4 of FIG. 3.
T-he particular embodiment of the invention chosen for the purpose of illustration comprises a set of mattress handles, each handle comprising a strap 1 and enlarged 3,285,404 Patented Nov. 15, 1966 rice ends 2 as disclosed in the aforesaid patent. According to this invention the enlarged ends 2 are interconnected by necks 3 to hold handles in spaced relationship so that the handles can be separated easily. While each set may comprise any desired number of handles, a convenient number is twelve. Each set, including the necks 3, are preferably formed in a unitary piece of plastic material in a mold such as shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 comprising upper and lower parts 4 and 6 having opposed recesses 7 to form the straps and recesses 8 to form the ends 2, with an inlet 9 through which the plastic material may be injected.
When formed according to this invention the handles may be -fed to a press such as shown in the aforesaid patent in groups instead of being handled separately. When the press descends to attach a handle it may either break or cut the necks joining the foremost handle to the next handle of the set. Preferably each neck is severed at both ends so that no parts of the necks remain on the handles after they are attached.
It should be understood that the present disclosure is for the purpose of illustration only and that this invention includes all modifications and equivalents which fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I cla-im:
A set of lmattress handles comprising a plurality of parallel straps having their opposite sides in parallel planes and having spaces between their opposed edges, each strap having enlarged ends for -attachment to mattresses and an intermediate hand-grip section of lesser width, and severable necks bridging said spaces between said planes, said necks being disposed between said enlarged ends so as not to project from the hand-grip section when severed.
