This invention relates to leather articles and the method of making the same and the object of my invention is to provide a method of makin leather articles by weaving together small units formed of leather to produce an attractive and novel article.

Another object of my invention is to provide a series of dies for producing leather units which can be woven by hand into a new and attractive article of manufacture.

Another object of my invention is to provide means for forming leather articles from small scraps of leather.

Still another object of my invention is to produce a leather article having different colored leathers woven together to provide an article of attractive and novel appearance.

I accomplish the above, and other objects of the invention which will be apparent as the description proceeds, by means of the construction disclosed in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 shows the outlines of a pocketbook, partly woven according to my invention- Figure 2 shows the manner of weaving together certain of the units to form the desired article; 7

Figure 3 shows the method of weaving together certain other of the units to form a design;

Figures 4, 5, 6 and 7 are detail views of the dies for making the leather units.

On the drawings, in which like reference characters indicate like parts on all of the views thereof, 1 indicates the die for making what will be termed a single unit, 2 indicates a die for making what will be termed a double unit and 3 indicates a die for making what will be termed a triple unit. These units are provided with apertures 4 at both extremities and with fold lines 5. In making up an article from the leather units, which are stamped from the dies, a unit is bent upon itself along the fold line corresponding to the dotted line 5 so that the apertures 4 at the extremities register with each other. Another unit is then passed through the registering apertures 4L and this process is continued until a continuous strip is formed. ItRis apparent that when the single units are thus interwoven, a chain will be formed. If it is desired to "Work in a design having different colored -leathers,'this may be accomplished as is indicated 'in Figure 3 where a triple element 3 isshown as interwoven with one double unit 2 of one color of leather and another unit 20f a different color of leather. The elements 2 are arranged soas to form a pattern-as is shown in the lined parts of Figure in Figure 2'is shown the means for joining the edges of a bag, wherein one side edge A is joined to the opposite edge B by means of a series of double units 2, one series :of apertured portions of the double units being interwoven with the-side edge And the other series of apertured portions being in terwoven "with the side edge B. A strap handle for the bag may be made by interweaving double units in a similar manner. The single units 1 will extend around the top edge of the bag asis shown in Figures 1 and 3.

Strip .6-shownin Figure 7 is used primarily to reinforce the top edge of an article, the units being woven through the apertures 7 in this strip being aligned with the registering apertures 4 at the top of the bag and the strip 1 being woven through all of these apertures.

It is apparent that articles of many kinds can be made from the units interwoven as indicated in the various figures of the drawings, for example, a belt might be formed by interweaving double units 2.

While I have referred throughout the specification to the article being made entirely from leather, it is apparent that my same method could be employed for making articles from other flexible materials and I do not desire to be limited except within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and Patent is:

1. A bag, the-main body portion comprising a series ofelongated units, each of said units having a plurality of apertures in one end thereof and a plurality of apertured tabs at the other end thereof, each unit being folded centrally upon itself and looped through the apertures of adjacent folded units, the apertures in the said one end of each unit being in register with the apertures in the tabs of the unit, means for joining the r side edges of the bag body, and means for finishing the top of the bag body, said last named means comprising a series of multiple folded units with the line of fold constituting the top edge of the bag, a series of single units disposed at right angles to the units comprising the bag body, said single-units and said multiple units being interwoven with the units constituting the top of the bag,

the superposed side edges of the body being in alignment, said main body portion consisting of a series of elongated units, each of said units having a plurality of apertures in one end thereof and a plurality of apertured tabs at the other end thereof, said units being interwoven with each unit folded centrally upon itself and having one tab looped through the aperture of an adjacent folded unit and another tab loopedthrough the aper ture of another adj aoent' folded unit, the end apertures of a tab being in register with the apertures in the tabs of a unit, means for joining the side edges of the bag body, said means comprising a strip of folded and interwoven double units, one tab of each of said double units being also looped through the adj acent side aperture of the unit forming part of the side edge of the bag, and the other tab of each said double unit being looped also through the adjacent side aperture of the unit forming part of the other side edge of the bag.
