WATERIVIELON CARRIER.
Application filed October 22, 1921.
To all who-m itmay concern/f Be it known that SUMNER F. CALL, 2. citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watermelon Carriers, of which the'following is a specification.
This invention relates to a watermeloncarrier. I use the term more or less for convenience, and for the further fact that the article has been found of particular advantage for supporting and transporting a watermelon. It is conceivable that said device can be utilized with equal advantage in connection with other fruits, such as casaba melons, cantaloupes and fruit of the same general character, although it is of peculiar importance when employed for carrying a watermelon. While I have a number of objects in view, the more important of them, are the provision of means of a proper nature which can be readily, and practically instantly operatively associated with a fruit, such as a watermelon, and by which the fruit can be carried in a satisfactory manner without possibility of loss. It is a matter of fact that on the purchase of a watermelon, the purchaser ordinarily has it sent home by truck or otherwise. I provide a device which can be quickly connected with a watermelon, and by which it can be easily carried.
In the drawings accompanying and forum ing part of the present specification I have shown in detail a form of embodiment of the invention which to enable those skilled in the art to practice the same will be set forth fully in the following description. Obviously I am not restricted to the exact disclosure thus made. I may depart therefrom in a number of respects within the scope of the invention defined by the claim following said description.
Referring to said drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of a watermelon-carrier involving the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation and Fig. 3 an end view of the same.
Fig. a is a top plan view of a strap.
Fig. 5 is an edge view of the same.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of a handle.
Figs. 7 and 8 are end and top plan views of the handle.
Fig. 9 is a view on a small scale showing a manner of using the article.
Serial No. 509,543.
The device includes in its structure desirably two straps which may be of any suitable material. The elongated straps 2, of which there are two generally in practice and of some galvanized sheet metal answers satisfactorily in this connection. The straps 2 arefurnishedwith some suitable means for their positive connection with a watermelon or like fruit, and the spurs 3 which may be punched from the stock of the straps or strips 2 answers satisfactorily in this connection. Obviously there may be any number of these spurs. In some cases there may be but one; as a matter of fact it may not always be necessary to provide spurs for positively connecting the straps or strips with the melons. When the straps are connected to the article to be carried, the spurs 3 are thrust into the melon and are then wrapped transversely about the same at longitudinally separated places as shown for instance in Fig. 9.
Associated with the straps or strips 2 is a suitable handle such as that denoted in a general way by 4 and which will hereinafter he more fully described. One end portion of each of the'straps 2 has as shown a single hole or perforation as 5 although if desired a number may be formed therein. The other end portion of the respective straps has a row of holes 6 so as to provide for adjustment to conform to the size of the melon to be carried.
In connecting up the straps with amelon, one of them will be wrapped about the melon at one side of the transverse center line. thereof and the spurs or prongs 3 of it will be thrust into the melon. The same procedure will be repeated with the complemental strap on the opposite side of said transverse center line. This will bring the single hole 5 of each of the straps on what is for the time being the upper side of the melon, the row of holes 6 being opposite thesingle hole 5 as shown for instance in Fig. l.
The handle comprises a bail or yoke like of the feetv8, asshown Figure 8, will be thrust through the single perforations, of
hole 5 of each of the straps 2 after which erativ e1yc0nneets the handle with the straps 2nwhieh "at this time are rigidly associated with the melon.
What I claim 1s:-. v t A watermelon-earner comprising two strips to'eneirele the watermelon and'provided with spurs for detachably connecting thestrips with said watermelon, the strips having aperforation at one-end portion and a series of perforations at their opposite end portion, and a bail-like handle having flat ends lying in a horizontal plane when the handle is 'in use, said ends being provided with upstanding lugs adjacent their edges whiehare adapted respectively to extend through end perforations in the strips when the latter overlie'said ends i "In testimony whereof-I a'iiix my signature.
