United States Patent 3,279,663 UMBRELLA AND SLING THEREFOR Ruben J. Torres, 13 Rue des Marronniers, Paris, France Filed Dec. 21, 1964. Ser. No. 419,811 Claims. (Cl. 224-5.1)
This invention relates to an umbrella and a sling or strap therefor and has as its primary object the provision of a detachable sling which may be readily attached to or detached from an umbrella for the purpose of supporting the umbrella on the person of the user in a variety of positions.
A 'further object of this invention is the provision of a sling or strap of this character adapted to be used in conjunction with an umbrella which will support the latter in such manner as to leave both hands of the user free and unencumbered.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a strap or sling of this character which is adjust-able to a variety of lengths and which may be attached in various positions to the umbrella.
Still other objects reside in the combinations of elements, arrangement of parts, and features of construction, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter as the description of the invention proceeds and shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the umbrella and sling of the instant invention shown in full line as supported over the shoulder of an individual, the latter being indicated in dotted lines, additional positions of support for the umbrella being also indicated in dotted lines;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevational view of the sling of the instant invention detached from the umbrella; and
FIGURE 3 is a front elevational view of the strap.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Having reference now. to the drawing in detail, an umbrella in accordance with the instant invention is generally indicated at and includes a shaft or shank 11 and a handle 12 of any desired conventional configuration but provided with a straight elongated portion 13 aligned with the shaft. The umbrella also includes a conventional pointed ferrule 14 having an enlarged end cap 15, and the usual rib structure 16 and a cover 17.
Adjacent the juncture of the elongated portion 13 of handle 12, and shaft 11 is a swivel link 18.
The sling comprising an important feature of the instant invention is generally indicated at 20 and comprises an elongated strap 21 having a reverted end portion 22 which is secured by rivets 23, in the bight of which is loosely supported a ring 24. The ring 24 is of greater diameter than the ferrule 21, but is of less diameter than the enlarged socket 15, so that it will pass over the ferrule, but not over the rib structure of the umbrella, for a purpose which will appear hereinafter.
The opposite end of the strap is reverted as at 25 and has an elongated end portion 26 which is re-reverted as at 27 through a conventional adjusting buckle 28, the arrangement being such that the efiective length of the strap may be varied as desired. The reverted end portion 25 swingably supports a rectangular loop 29 to which is attached a snap hook 30 having a spring finger 31 therein.
In the use and operation of the device when it is desired to employ the strap as a sling the length may be suitably adjusted and the snap hook 30 engaged with the link 18. The ring 24 is then slipped over the pointed ferrule 14 and stopped at the end of the ferrule by the enlarged cap 15, the arrangement thus being such that the umbrella may be supported over the shoulder of an individual, generally indicated in dotted lines at P as shown in FIGURE 1.
3,279,663 Patented Oct. 18, 1966 Alternatively the ring 24 may be engaged by the snap hook 30 and the strap 21 positioned about the waist of the user to be worn as an umbrella supporting belt, the snap hook 30 being engaged in the link 18, as indicated in dotted lines in FIGURE 1. When it is desired to carry the umbrella in the conventional fashion by supporting the handle 12 in the hand H of the individual the ring 24 may he slipped over the handle 12, if the configuration of the handle 12 is such as to permit this, as shown in dotted lines in FIGURE 1, or if the handle is large or ornate, the ring 24 may be engaged by the snap hook 30, which may be then additionally connected to the link 18, so that the sling is doubled and hangs loosely along the shaft 11 of the umbrella.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved supporting sling or strap for an umbrella, which accomplishes all of the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. In combination with an umbrella including a shaft, a handle at one end of said shaft, a ferrule at the other end of said shaft, a collapsible rib structure on said shaft, and a cover for said rib structure; a sling comprising an elongated strap, means for securing one end of said strap to said handle adjacent its juncture with said shaft and means for securing the other end of said strap to said fer rule, said ferrule comprising an elongated pointed member and said means for attaching said other end of said strap to said ferrule comprising a ring carried by said other end of said strap 'engageable over said ferrule and of less diameter than said rib structure when folded, whereby said ring is stopped from sliding up said shaft, said means for attaching said ring to said ferrule being detachable and selectively engageable over said handle, whereby said strap may be extended around the waist of the user as a belt, so that the umbrella carried by said strap may be either supported over the shoulder as by a sling, or from the waist as by a belt.
2. The structure of claim 1 including means to vary the effective length of said strap.
3. The structure of claim 2 wherein said last mentioned means includes an adjusting buckle movably mounted on said strap and having a reverted end of said strap extended therethrough.
4. The structure of claim 1 wherein said means for securing said one end of said strap to said handle are releasable.
5. The structure of claim 4 wherein the releasable means securing said one end of said strap to said handle included a ring pivoted on said handle, and a snap hook secured to said one end of said strap engagable with said ring.
