ROLLER-SKATE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,523, dated October 6, 1885.

Be it known that I, XV. SCOTT CANADAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Castle, in the county of I'Ienry and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Roller-Skates, ot' which the following is a speciication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to roller-skates; and it has for its object to provide a skate whereby the user may be enabled to change the di rection ot' movement from a direct line to short curves at will, and to provide a skate whereby perfect Vfreedom of action will be allowed.

A further object of the invention is to provide a roller-skate which shall be cheap and simple in its construction, and one that will be strong and durable.

The invention consists in the details of construction and. com bi nations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a skate constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters o1" reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the footrest, which is provided on its under side, near the rear end thereof, with a downwardly-extending` iixed bracket, B, between the two arms of which, upon an axle, a, is mounted a roller, C.

D represents a plate secured tothe under side ot' the foot-rest ot' the skate, at the forward end thereof, said plate being flush with the under side of said foot-rest. The said plate is circular in contour at its rear end, as shown at b, and at the rear corners of the said plate are formed lugs or stops c.

Iivoted to the under side of the plate D, near the forward end thereof and midway between the two sides of the same, is a plate, E, having secured to its under side, near the rear end thereof, a downward]y-extending bracket, F, between the arms of which is mounted, upon a shaft, d, a roller, e. The rear end of the plate Serial No. 154,541. (No model.)

E is provided with slits or cuts, which divide its rear end into three ears or lugs, g g and g', the outer of said ears heilig turned inwardly upon themselves and iitting the under side of the plate D, thus forming guides for the plate E, said ears or lugs, when the pivoted plate E is turned to its fullest extent in either direction, being adapted to bear against the stops or lugs c. The central lug, g', is provided with a hole or opening, 71., iu which is fitted the cud ot' a lougitudinally-disposed spring, F', the rear end of which is turned at right angles to its body, and is secured to the footrest of the skate.

A loop or staple, G, is tted over the spring F', to hold the said spring in place and to bring the line of draft or strain as far as is possible in a straight line.

A skate constructed as above described may be manufactured and supplied ata slight cost, is thoroughly effective in its operation, and strong and durable.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is#

l. The combination, with the plate D, circular in contour at its rear end, and provided with stops o, formed by recessing the plate, of a plate, E, carrying a bracket having a journaled roller and pivoted to the plate D, and a spring connecting plate E with the foot-rest, as set forth.

2. In a roller-skate, the combination, with the foot-rest, of a plate circularin contour at ils rear end and having stops at its rear corners, a pivoted plate having a fixed bracket carryinga journaled roller, ears g g on said plate, said ears being turned inwardly, an ear, g', and a spring connecting said ear and the footrest, substantially as set fort-h.
