UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. BUNNELL, OF MEXIA, TEXAS.
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,432, dated September 29, 1885. Application filed June 19, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs F. BUNNELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mexia, in the county of Limestone and Stateof Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a part of my improved spring bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of one of the springs separated, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of one the head-rests.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to spring bedbottoms having twin springs; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the parallel longitudinal slats, 113011 the top or which the cross-slats B are secured, and the rear ends of which, or the ends at the head end of the bed, are pro vided with a series of notches, O, in their upper sides.
D are the springs, which are so-called twin springs, consisting of two helical springs connected by a connecting-piece, E, of a double heart shape.
F F are the head-rests, which consist of longitudinal pieces G, hinged at their inner ends to the cross-slat nearest to the head-rest, and of cross-slats H, each one-half of thelength of the cross-slats B.
Two rods, I, bent to form pointed bails, are pivoted with their ends upon the under sides of the longitudinal slats of the head rest, and the pointed or bent middle portions of these bails may engage the notches in the longitudinal slats of the bottom and support the.
hinged head-rests in their adjusted positions. The upper coils of the springs at the edges of the bottom are connected by means of a coiled wire, J, which is inserted around the outer side of the upper coil and through and around the bent portions of the heart-shaped connecting-pieces, which are exposed toward the edge of the bottom.
A Wide bail, K, is movably attached to the bent double heart-shaped connecting-pieces of the edge springs of each head-rest by means of eyes at its ends, and its middle portion, which lies between the coiled wireJ and the edge springs of the head-rest, is bent and curved to form heartshaped curves or coils L, the projecting bent ends of which rest upon the tops of the edge springs of the head-rest, and-thus by hearing over a large surface distributes the weight which may fall upon the said bail over a number of springs, and the coiled wire J is coiled around the straight sides of the wide bails and around the curved portions exposed at the edges of the coiled or bent middle portion of the bail, the said coiled wire connecting all the springs.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the main frame, the springs having their connecting-pieces curved or coiled to form double heart-shaped configurations, the hinged headrests, the wide bails movably attached at the ends of their side pieces to the connectingpieces of the springs at the side edges of the head-rests, and having their middle pieces curved or coiled to form heart-shaped configurations resting upon the tops of the springs of the head-rest, and
the coiled wire coiled around all the portions of the springs, and their connectingpieces exposed toward the edges of the bed, and coiled around all the portions of the wide bails exposed to the edges of the head-rests, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES F. BUN NELL. Witnesses:
