WARREN G. SLATER, OF FREMONT, MICHIGAN,"ASSIGNOR OF THREE FOURTHS TO JAMES R. ODELL, SALMON P. ODELL, AND LORENZO V. DAVIS, OF SAME PLACE.
SHOE-UPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 327,114, dated .Eieptemberjz) 1885.
Application filed February 7, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WARREN G. SLATER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe- Uppers, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadtherein to theact'ompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to imprt ve nents in shoe-uppers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter more Iully explained, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a side View of the shoeupper with the front open, showing the inside thereof and Fig. 2 is a detail face view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of oneside only of the upper, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the shoe-upper, which is provided with the usual buttons, at, and the overlapping fly-buttoning portion 12, having the button-holes 0, corresponding to the number of buttons on the upper. This fly portion is separated from the main part of the upper in front of the same, and it is provided on its inner side with loops d, which form a part of the inner facing of the strengtheningstrip of the button-holes, and said fly portion is further provided with openings or slits e,opposite to the loops above mentioned, but are arranged alternately therewith, as shown in the drawings. Directly opposite to these slits or openings are arranged similar openings,f, in which extends one end of a series of straps, g, the ends therein being stitched to the upper proper. These straps extend from the upper through the slits e to the inside of the fly, and are provided at their free ends with (No model.)
loop h,to receive acord or shoestring, i, which latter also passes through the loops 6, and is secured at its lower end to the upper, the free end thereof passing through an eyelet, j, on the fly, and can be readily drawn when it is desired to tighten the shoe to the foot. An innerflap is provided, as at k, which is stitched tothe inside of the upper, and not only serves to prevent the straps and string from coming in contact with the foot, but covers the gap between the upper proper and the button-hole tly, thus preventing the stocking on the wearers foot from being exposed.
It will be observed from the above description, and by reference to the annexed drawings, that-the upper can be readily adjusted to fit the wearers foot by the cord 2' yielding, should the foot be larger than the upper, or said cord drawn taut to fit the shoe to asmaller foot, as the case may be, without removing and replacing the buttons; at the same time it is neat in appearance, durable and easy to the foot, and cheap to manufacture.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The hcrein-desoribed shOeupper, adapted to be adj ust-ed to the wearers foot, consisting of the upper proper, the inside flap, the looped straps stitched at one end to the upper, and the inside facing provided with the loops, said strap-loops and facingloops adapted to re ceive a cord, one end being secured to the up per and the other end left free, whereby the upper may be adjusted on the Wearers foot, as described and shown.
.In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
WARREN G. SLATER.
