MATTHEW M. WALSH, OF I'IILLSBOROUGH, ILLINOIS.
COMBENED TABLE AND WRlTlNG-DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,814, dated September 22, 1885.
(No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATTHEW M. \VALSH, of Hillsborough, in the county of Montgomery and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Table and iVriting-Desk; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in writing-desks, the object of the same being to provide a combined table and writing-desk which shall be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully dcscribed, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the combined table and desk, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionalview thereof, the cover in each instance being raised.
A represents a box table-bed, and B a box cover for the tahlebed. A or B may be asolid cover of any desired thickness.
0 C represent the legs of the table. The cover B is hinged to the bed A, preferably by straphinges l), secured by screws E or other suitable means to the upper edges of the bed A and lower edges of the cover B, being let into the said edges sufficiently to bring their exposed faces flush with the edges.
To the box-covcr B, atits lower edge and above the hinges D,is rigidly secured the laterallyprojccting bar F, to the forward edge, G, of which is hinged the writing-table H, occupying the central portion of the upper part of the bed A. The table H is provided on its under edges with the longitudinally-extending wedge-shaped bars I, the same being provided at the rear with the deepened ends J, and being gradually inclined or cut away toward their forward ends, at which point they are provided with the prolonged recesses K, terminating in the hooks L.
The inner sides of the inside longitudinal rails,M, are provided with the lugs N ,adapted to engage thehooks Lwhcn the cover is raised,
land by means of which and the contact of the rear ends of the bars I against the back horizontal rail, J, of the bed A the cover is prevented from tilting too far back, which would place the writing-table H out of useful adjustment.
The forward end of the table-bed A is provided with the horizontally pivoted or hinged section K,which is adapted to overlap the table H when the cover is closed. The forward edge of the table is provided with the horizontally-extending L-shape groove, as shown, and the hinge-section K is likewise provided with an inverted L-shape groove adapted to cover, thus enabling the section K and the cover to rest flush with each other at this point and form a continuous smooth writingsurface, and also hold the cover against any accidental closing.
If the cover of the table be box, as shown, it may be fitted with the doors 0 O, which inclose receptacles adapted to receive paper, &c. The doors may also have pockets P se cured to their inner sides, and should be pro vided with spring-eatches Q.
The table-bed is conveniently provided with a centrally-locatcd drawer, R, and with receptacles S and Tthe former inclosed by a door, U, and the latter adapted to receive stamps,&e.,for convenient use. A suitable re cess for an inkstand is also provided.
From the above construction it will be observed that when the cover B is elevated the writing-table will also be elevated at its rear end, thus causing it to rest in an oblique position. The section K, resting over the top front edge of the writing-table H, will automatically be lowered until the hooks L and rear ends of the bars I engage the lugs N and the rail J, respectively, whereby the backward movement of the cover is stopped and the L- shaped portions on the section K and the cover will then engage each other and retain the cover against accidental closing. \Vhen it is desired to lower the cover, the section K is raised, and the parts will naturally assume with small effort their normal positions in closed adjustment.
It will further be observed that my improved mechanism for lifting the writing-table and register with the groove on the edge of tlre holding the cover in elevated position renders my combination suitable for a center-table as well as a very convenient writing-desk.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combined table and writing-desk, the combination, with a box table bed and a cover hinged thereto, of a writing board or table hinged to the front of the box-cover, and a pivoted section adapted to engage the table and hold the cover in elevated adjustment, substantially as set forth.
2. In a combined table and writingdesk, the combination, with a box table-bed and a cover hinged thereto, of a board or table hinged to the front of the cover, and a pivoted or hinged section secured to the front of the table-bed, and adapted to engage and hold the cover in elevated adjustment, substantially as set forth.
3. In a combined table and writing-desk, the combination, with a boX table-bed and a cover hinged thereto, of a table provided with wedged shaped side bars having recesses therein hinged to the cover and lugs secured to the bed and adapted to engage the recesses, substantially as set forth.
4. In a combined table and writing-desk, the combination, with a box table-bed and a cover hinged thereto, of a table hinged or pivoted to the cover and provided with wedgeshaped and recessed side bars, lugs adapted to 6. In a combined table and writing-desk, 5
the combination, with abox table-bed and a cover hinged thereto, of a table provided with wedged-shaped side bars, the latter having hook-shaped ends, the said hook-shaped ends beingadapted to engage lugs, and the rear ends of the side bars adapted to engage the rear portion of the box-bed, whereby the cover is held against backward displacement.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
