ALEXANDER P. BALDWIN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
BRlDLE-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326.703, dated September 22, 1885.
Application filed February 12, 1884. Renewed July 27, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER P. BALD- WIN, of Newark, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in BridleBits, of which the following is a specification.
Bridle-bits as commonly constructed have the mouth piece or bar jointed at the middle. Hitherto it has been the custom to unite the two parts by constructing one of them in the form of a closed eye, and making the other in the form of an open hook, which was inserted through the eye, and then closed. In use these bits are subjected to severe strains, particularly to strains of a twisting or torsional character, the effect of which is frequently to open the joint, which results either in injury to the mouth of the animal or to the separation of the parts, the latter being attended with great danger to the driver.
It is the aim of my invention to provide a bit which may be cheaply manufactured, but which may possess great strength in its joint, and be particularly adapted to withstand the twisting strains.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view ofa bit constructed on my improved plan. Figs. 2 and 3 are side views of the two parts separated from each other.
In constructing my bit I first provide the part B, having at one end a solid eye, athat is to say, an eye without slit or opening there from. I next provide the part A, having one end in the form of an open eye or hook, f that is to say,an eye with a slit or opening, 0, at the side next to the body portion, in order to permit it to be inserted through or interlocked with the eye a. Open eyes have been heretofore employed for this purpose in this class of devices; but the end or extremity of the eye portion was simply returned to the body and seated thereon, in consequence of which the eye would open under the severe torsional strains to which it was subjected in use. My construction differs from the old in this regard, in that the extremity of the eye portion f, made of wrought metal, is formed with a tip or projection, (2', extending laterally therefrom in position to be seated against and welded to the side of the body portion. In practice it is found that by means of this lip I am enabled to weld the end of the eye portion firmly to the body, so that it willwithstand severe strains without danger of being opened thereby. This is an important feature, not onlyin that it avoids the danger which results from the breakage of the bit when in use, but also in that it permits the joint to be safely made smaller than those of the ordinary construction.
As an additional security against the opening of the joint, I propose to provide the lip dwith a stud or projection, g, on the one side, and to provide the body with ahole or cavity, 6, to receive said stud when the eye is closed. This stud, although advantageous, is not a necessary feature of my construction.
\Vith the exception of the joint the two parts of the bit may be made of any ordinary or approved form.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The improved blank for awrought-metal bit, having an eye portion,f, formed on one end thereof and curled backward, as shown, said eye portion being provided at its extremity with a laterally-extended lip, d.
2. The wrought-metal blank for a bit, provided at one end with a recess, 6, and the eye portion f, the latter having at its extremity the lip (Z and stud g.
3. The improved bridlebit, consisting of the part B, having the continuous eye a, and the part A, having the eye porti0nf,with the laterallyextended lip d, welded to the body.
