UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL I. \VILKINSON, OF YAZOO CITY, MISSISSIPPI.
COTTON-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 326,698, dated September 22, 1885. Application filed July 29, 1885. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL I. WILKIN- SON, of Yazoo City, in the county of Yazoo and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Cotton-Press, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved cotton-press of a special construction, which press operates very easily and packs large quantities in short times.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is aplan view of my improved cotton-press, parts being in section. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same on the line 00 00, Fig. 1.
The balingbox A is placed horizontally upon the ground, and is provided at the center of one end with a wheel, B, running on the ground. From the opposite end abeam,0, projects, which passes longitudinally through the box, and has its end pivoted to the center of a fixed horizontal beam or frame, D, in such a manner that the beam 0 can swing on the beam D, the baling-box A running on the single wheel B. The baling-box A is divided into baling-chambers E-one at each side of the beam Owhich chambers can be closed at the under side of the box A by re movable plates F, and at the top by two hinged doors, G, each of which hinged doors can be locked on the box by means of latches H. At the outer swinging end of the box A a box, J, for receiving the bale is placed in each chamber E, and into the said box the plungers K fit, one of which works in each chamber E, the said plungers being connected by pivoted connecting-bars M with the fixed beam D. The plungers K are made quite long, so that they can be guided easily. The entire press can be made of wood or metal.
The operation is as follows: When the beam 0 is at right angles to the beam D, the plunand compresses the cotton between it and the outer end of the compartment, and the plunger K in the other compartment is moved from the outer end of the right-hand compartment, thus permitting of placing a fresh quantity of cotton into said compartment. The desired quantities of cotton are placed in the two compartments E, either successively or in one operation, and'then the box A is rocked to and fro, thus causing the plungers to compress the cotton.
The press can be operated by hand, or by animal, steam, water, or air power, suitable attachments being provided for rocking the box in alternate directions. The press can also be used for baling other materialsuch as hay, straw, leaves, 850.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a box pivoted to swing in the horizontal plane, of plungers in the box connected with a fixed object, whereby the plungers will be reciprocated in the box when the latter is swung or rocked in the horizontal plane, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a box having a projecting beam or bar pivoted in such a manner that the box can swing or rock in the horizontal plane, of plungers in the box connected with the fixed object to which the beam of the rocking box is pivoted, and of a supporting-wheel on the rocking end of the box, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with a baling-box pivoted to rock or swing in the horizontal plane,
of a supporting-wheel pivoted on the swingplungers with the beam D,the doors G, and ing end of the box, substantially as herein thewheel B on the rockingor swinging end 10 shown and described. I of the box, substantially as herein shown and 4. The combination, with the box A, didescribed.
5 vided into the two compartments E, of the v beam vO, the fixed beam or frame 1), to which Witnesses: V the beam 0 is pivoted, the plungers K in the CLAIBORNE BOWMAN, compartments E, the rods M, connecting the FLOYD J STRIOKLIN.
