I-IAZELIUS B. GASKIN, OF BLOUNTSTOWN, FLORIDA.
HAY-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1909.
Application filed December 26, 1908. Serial No. 469,334.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I-IAZELIUS B. GAsKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blountstown, in the county of Calhoun and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to presses for hay, and other similar substances, provided with slidable rebounding plungers; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the press. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the press. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view, taken on the line cc-w in Fig. 1.
A is the press-chamber which is supported horizontally in any approved manner, and provided with tension devices B at its rear end of any approved construction.
C is the plunger which slides longitudinally in the press-chamber, and which is provided with a bar 0 which slides in a hole in a guide-plate c at the front end of the press.
I) is a retracting spring secured between the plunger C and the guide-plate 0, and provided with a bolt (Z for adjusting its tension.
E is a curved retainer spring secured to one side of the press-chamber, and comprising a single strip or plate of spring metal which projects in front of the plunger when the plunger is retracted. This spring prevents the return of the hay toward the plunger, so that more hay can be inserted into the presschamber through the opening d at its top. This spring E is secured to the inner side of the wall of the presschamber, so that no hole is cut in the side wall, and the free end of the spring normally extends nearly to the other side wall of the chamber.
F is a toothed rack secured to the bar 0, and f is a toothed segment which engages with the toothed rack. This segment preferably consists of a toothed wheel having certain of its teeth left Off to form blank spaces at two opposite points of its periphery. This segment is secured to a shaft G arranged in a vertical position and ournaled in bearings g at the front end portion of the press.
H is a toothed wheel secured to the top end portion of the shaft G, and I is a pinion which gears into the wheel H. This pinion I is secured on a shaft J which is arranged in a vertical position and journaled in bearings j at the front end portion of the press and on the other side thereof from the shaft G. A removable handle 9" is attached to the top of the shaft J, and affords a means for revolving the shaft by hand.
K is a removable pole secured to the wheel H by bolts is, and provided with a curved portion is at its middle part so that it will clear the handle j. This pole has a draft-attachment L for a horse or other animal at its free end, and it is made of such a length that the horse can walk around the press in a circle without coming into contact with any part of it. The press can be worked wholly by hand power or by horse power, or the power of the horse can be supplemented periodically by hand power when necessary. The segment operates the rack and presses the ha into the chamber by means of the plunger. When the blank portions of the segment come next to the rack, the plunger rebounds so that more hay can be packed into the press-chamber, and so that the horse does not have to be stopped. The head-blocks and other necessary parts of the press which are not shown in the drawings are of any approved construction.
What I claim is:
1. In a press, the combination, with a press-chamber, of a plunger slidable therein and provided with a toothed raclcbar, a vertical shaft journaled at one side of the press, a' toothed segment secured on the said shaft and engaging with the said rack-bar, a toothed wheel also secured on the said shaft, a vertical shaft journaled at the other side of the press and provided at its top with a handle for revolving it, and a pinion secured on the last said shaft and gearing into the said wheel.
2. In a press, the combination, with a press-chamber, of a plunger slidable therein and provided with a toothed rack-bar, a vertical shaft journaled at one side of the press, a toothed segment secured on the said shaft and engaging with the said rack-bar, a toothed wheel also secured on the said shaft, a vertical shaft journaled at the other In testimony whereof I have affixed my side of the press and provided at its top signature in the presence'of two Witnesses.
with a handle for revolvin it a pole secured to the said Wheel and provi ded with a curved HAZELIUS GASKIN' portion for clearing the said handle, and a Witnesses:
draft-attachment connected to the free end S. O. COX, portion of the said pole. CHAS. L. HOBBS.
