To all whom z'zf may concern:
Be it known that I, MACK J. ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rutledge, in the county of Crenshaw and State of Alabama, have invent-ed new and useful Improvements in Ealing-Presses, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to baling presses and it has particularly that type of presses in which a plunger is arranged for longitudinal movement within a press box, means being provided for imparting a reciprocatory motion for said plunger.
One object of the present invention 'is to simplify and improve the construction of the plunger head and the manner of connecting the same with the pitm'an, whereby it is directly actuated.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction and operation of the plunger actuating means.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as thel nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a top plan view of a baling press constructed in accordance with the invention.

Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken through a portion of one of the side walls of the press box showing one of the detents.
The press box 15 which is of conventional construction may be supported on wheels 16 for convenience in transporting the same from place tol place. The bottom member 17 is extended materially to the forward of the side walls ofthe press, to form a support for the means whereby the plunger is actuated, the forward end of said bottom member being supported in the customary manner on a front truck 17.
The plunger head P which is supported on the bottom member 17 for sliding movement between the side walls of the press box consists of a rectangular frame having fro-nt and rear walls 18-19 and top and bottom walls 20-21. The side faces of the rear wall are provided with notches 22 forming seats for the retaining devices each consisting of a dog 23 hinged by means of a staple 50 eX- ternally on the side wall of the press box, said dog having a beveled tooth 51 that extends through a slot or opening 52 in the side wall 53 so as to lie in the path of and prevent return movement of the material that is being pressed as well as the partition boards inserted between the bales. At least two of these retaining devices or dogs are preferably used on each side wall of the press box. The toothed end of each dog is normally projected through the slot 52 to a position within the press box by the action of a spring 54 coiled about a bolt 55 which extends through the wall of the pressbox and through a slot or opening 56`in the dog 23, the outer end of such spring abutting on and capable of being tightened by a nut 57 on the bolt. The front wall 18 of the plunger head is provided with a vertical slot 24 for the passage of a knuckle 25 formed at the rearward end of the pitman 26, said knuckle having a transverse opening 27 for the passage of a connecting member consisting of a pin 28. The pitman is provided adjacent to the knuckle 25 with rounded shoulders 29 abutting on the front wall 18 of the plunger.
Supported on the bottom member 17 adjacent to the front end thereof are bracketsv 30 between which an approximately horizontal arm 31 is rmly secured, said arm having pivotally connected therewith a lever B, one arm of which is pivotally connected with the forward end of the pitman 26. The upwardly extending arm of the lever B is connected by a pitman 32 with a crank 33 formed on a shaft 34 which is supported for rotation by the brackets 30. The shaft 34 carries a spur wheel 35 meshing with a pinion 36 on a shaft 37, also supported by the brackets 30, said shaft being equipped with 110 a balance Wheel 38 enabling it to be driven manually or by power derived from any convenient source.
ln the operation of this invention it is evident that when the shaft 37 is rotated, motion at a reduced speed would be imparted to the crank shaft 34 which transmits through the pitman 32 a rocking movement to the lever B, whereby the pitnian 26 actuating the plunger head P is actuated. Then the plunger is moved rearwardly in the press box for the purpose of compressing material placed therein, the shoulders 29 of the pitman 26 will forcibly press aga-inst the front Wall of the plunger head, there being no strain Whatever on the connecting pin 28 until the plunger is retracted, When the strain is so light that there Will be no danger of breakage or injury to the pin or connecta ing member. The improved press is eX- tremely simple and it may be manufactured in various dimensions at a moderate eX- ense.
What is claimed is In a baling press, a plunger, said plunger consisting of a rectangular iframe having a front Wall provided with a vertical slot, a pitman having a knuckle extending through the slot and shoulders abutting on the front Wall of the frame, a connecting pin extending through the knuckle within the frame adjacent to the inner face of the front Wall, and means for actuating the pitman.
