BALING PRESS.
I APPLICATION FILED 00T. 19. 1906.

B ALING-PRESS.
Specification Vof Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 24, 1907.
Application filed October 19,1906. Serial No. 339,622.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN JELr, a citizen of the United States, residing in Granite City, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ealing-Presses, of which the following is a full and clear description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in baling presses, and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts more fully set forth in the speciiication and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a View in side elevation, showing my improvements as applied to an ordinary baling press of standard construction; Fig. 2 is a top plan View.
The object of my invention is to construct a handpower baling press of the highest eiiiciency, one occupying and operating within a minimum of space, and one simple and durable in all its parts.
Referring to the drawingsA, A represent the top frame `pieces of the baling press, and B, B the lower parallel pieces which extend slightly beyondthe front end pieces 1, 1. And mounted upon the journal bearings 2, 2 securely bolted to theframe pieces l, 1 is a crank shaft 3 to which is connected an arm 4 connecting with a wrist pin 5 fixed in the head 6 for reciprocation through the hopper C of the baling box D. The said shaft 3 is provided on each end, outside the frame pieces, with cranks 7, 7 carrying crank-pins 8, 8 adapted to receive a suitable weight. or weights 9-9 to give force or momentum to the downward movement of the parts. Inside the frame upon the said shaft 3 are two sprocket wheels 10, 10 having ratchet teeth ll, 1l formed on their outer rim to engage with the ratchet pawl 12, and securely bolted to the iront end of the lower frame pieces B, B are journal bearings 13, 13, and mounted upon these said bearings is a straight shaft 14 which is provided with two small sprocket wheels 15, 15 over which lead sprocket chains 16, 16 to connect with the larger sprocket wheels 10, l0 upon the crank shaft 3. The lower shaft 14 is also provided with a ratchet 17 and lever 18 with which the shaft 14 is turned and the weights 9, 9 raised to their highest point by the cranks 7, 7 when the head 6 will be drawn back to clear the hopper.
In the baling operation one man feeds the hay, or other material to be baled, through the hopper C while a second man by operating ithe lever 18 raises the.
weights 9, 9 until they pass their highest center when they will sweep around by the force of gravity to a point beyond the low center, and to hold this position against a backward action the ratchet teeth ll engage with the ratchet pawl l2, and to continue the operation the lever 18 is acted upon to raise the weights from this point to again pass the high center point.
With each complete revolution of the crank shalt 3 the arm 4 is acted upon to reciprocate the head 6 through the hopper C to press the material ed therein into the baling box to be baled and tied in the usual manner.
Having described my invention what I claim is- 1, In a baling press, the combination with a ratchet le- Ver, of a Weight mechanism comprising a crank shaft mounted on bearings xed to the frame of the press, a crank fixed to each end of the said shaft, each crank being provided with a crank pin adapted to carry suitable weights, an arm connecting the crank shaft with a pin fixed in the head G; the said head; and a baling chamber through which the said head reciprocates, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a baling press, of a ratchet mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel and lever mounted upon a shaft journaled in bearings fixed to the lower sill of the press; the said shaft, sprocket wheels fixed thereon, an endless sprocket chain connecting each of the said sprocket wheels with sprocket wheels mounted upon a crank shaft journaled in bearings fixed to the iront end pieces of the press frame; the said crank shaft, the sprocket wheels mounted thereon having ratchet teeth formed on their outer lim to engage with a pawl upon the frame of the press; an arm connecting the crank shaft with a pin xed in the head 6; the said head; and a baling chamber through which the said head reciprocates, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CALVIN JELF.
