POWER-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1907.
Application filed December 31,1906. Serial No. 350,108.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. HAMLETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salem, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Power-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts whereby a safe and conveniently operated press is produced, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved power press. Fig. 2 represents the opposite side view. Fig. 3 represents a front view. Fig. 4 represents a rear view. Fig. 5 represents a top view. Fig. 6 represents a vertical section taken 1 in the line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 represents an enlarged detail view of the clutch operating mechanism when the plunger of the press is in its lower position. Fig. 8 represents the same when the plunger of the press is in its upper position. Fig. 9 represents a detail top view of the clutch operating mechanism.
In the drawings, A represents the frame of the press, B the die, and O the plunger which projects from the plunger slide D held in the frame A, and actuated in the downward direction by means of the spiral spring E, held in the longitudinal perforation F. The spring E is attached at its lower end to the fixed eye G, and at its upper end to the cap H, which is secured to the end of the said plunger slide D, and the rear side of the said plunger slide is provided with the notch I. At the back of the plunger slide D is placed the sliding catchbar J, provided with the pivoted catch K, which has its upper end pressed forward by means of the spiral spring L, and to the frame A at the back of the sliding catch-bar J is placed the catch-deflector W, pivoted to the frame A at the point M, and actuated for adjustment at its lower end by means of the screw N, the said doflector being provided with the incline O, which upon the upward movement of the sliding catch-bar .I, will cause the disengagement of the catch K from the notch I of the plunger slide, thus allowing the action of the spring E to cause the rapid downward movement of the said plunger slide; and the outward or inward adjustment of the catch-deflector W, will serve to either increase or decrease the stroke of the plunger slide. The catch-bar J is operated by means of the crank A and connecting rod B the said crank being formed on the shaft G which is operated from the driving shaft D by means of the pinion E and gear F and upon the opposite end of the shaft C from the gear F is secured the ratchet wheel G which is acted upon to prevent the backward rotation of the shaft G by means of the pawl 11, which latter is pivoted to the frame A of the machine at the point a.
The gear F is loose upon the shaft 0 the said shaft being caused to revolve by the engagement of the teeth b of the sliding clutch member I with the loose clutch member 0 at the hub of the gear F The sliding clutch member I may be operated for disengagement either by means of the hand lever J which is pivoted to a bracket on the frame of the press, at the point d, and connected with the yoke M of the said clutch-member at the joint 6, or by means of the poweractuated lever K which is pivoted to a bracket on the said frame at the point f. The lever K passes loosely through a slot g, made in the end portion of the sliding bar L which is rigidly connected with the yoke M of the sliding clutch-member. The lever K is connected by means of the links N with the bell-crank lever 0 which lever is pivoted at the point It to a plate P of the frame, and the outer end of the said bell-crank lever is held in position for movement along the side of the said frame plate, by means of the guide bar Q Upon the pin 71, to which the connecting rod B is jointed, is loosely placed the pendent hook R provided with the notch j adapted for engagement with the pin 70 at the outer end of the bell-crank lever 0 as shown in Fig. 8, the curved form of the lower end of the said hook serving to cause it to swing automatically into the position for engagement.
At the side of the machine is journaled the hand operated arm Z, by the movement of which the pendent hook B may be forced out of its engagement with the pin it, and then the said-bell-crank lever will drop to the position shown in Fig. 7, in which position the members of the driving clutch may by means of the hand lever J be forced into engagement to cause the operation of the machine, and in this case upon the rotation of the crank A and the consequent downward and subsequent upward movement of the catch-slide J, the notch j of the pendent hook R will engage with the pin k of the bell-crank lever O to cause the gradual disengagement of the members of the driving clutch, with the resulting stoppage of the operation of the machine at the completion of a single revolution, the automatic spring actuated operation of the press plunger having in the meantime been effected. And at this time the press will be securely locked against the subsequent accidental engagement of the members of the clutch, and the press can only be started into operation after the hook R has been disengaged from the pin 70, by the purposed inward movement of the arm I by the operator of the machine. But such disengagement and subsequent downward movement of the engaging arm of the bell-crank lever 0 will not serve to cause the engagement of the driving clutch members, for there is left in the mechanism a sufiicient amount of backlash at the links N and at the slot 9, to allow for such downward movement without affecting the clutch, thus leaving the clutch members to be actuated into cngagement'by the hand oi the operator upon the lever P.
To the upper side o, of the bell-crank lever 0 is attached the spring m, which engages with the stop n,
the crank shaft and connection between the crank shaft and the reciprocating eateh bar, for imparting reciprocating movement to the said catch-bar, the driven clutch member, the sliding clutch-member, the bellcrank lever connected with the said member and provided with the engaging pin, the pendent hook loosely connected with the sliding catch-bar and adapted for engagement with the pin of the bell-crank lever, to hold the sliding clutch memher out of engagement with its opposite driven member at the completion of a single revolution of the crank-shaft.
2. The combination of the crank-shaft, the plunger slide, the reciprocating catch-bar and the catch, the driven clutch member. the sliding clutch-member, the bell-crank lever connected with the said sliding clutch member and provided with the engaging pin, the pendent hook loosely connected with the reciprocating catch-bar and adapted for engagement with the pin or the bell-crank lever to hold the sliding clutch member out of engagement with the opposite clutch member at the completion of a single revolution of the cranleshatt, and the hand operated arm for mentwith the plunger slide, and the catch deflector with causing the disengagement of the pendent hook from the pin of the bell-crank lever.
The combination of the crankshaft, the plunger slide, the reciprocating catch-bar, and the catch,'thedriven clutch member, the sliding clutch-membcr, the belhcrank lever connected with the said sliding clutclrmember and provided with the engaging pin, the pendent hook loosely connected with the reciprocating catch-bar and adapted for engagement with the pin of the bell-crank lever, to hold the sliding clutclrmemberout of engagement with the pin of'the bell-erank lever'at the completion of a single revo lution of the crank-shaft, the hand operated arm for causing the disengagement of the pendent hook from the pin or the bell-crank lever. and the hand lever for operating; the sliding clutelrmember into engagementupon the re lease of the pin of the bell-crank lever from the notch of the hook.
4. The combination of the crank-shaft, the plunger slide, the reciprocating ca't'ch bar, and the catch, the driven clutch member, the sliding clutch-member. the bell-crank lever connected with the said sliding cluteh member and provided with the engaging pin,the pendent hook loosely connected with the reciprocating catch-bar and, adapted for engagement with the pin of the bell-crank lever, to carry the sliding clutch-member out of engagement with the driven clutch-member at the completion of a single revolution Of lllt) crank-shaft, and the spring and stop for limiting the upward movement of the arm of the bell-crank lever.
