(Cl. 30201) This invention relates generally to hair clippers and more particularly to a hair cutting guide attachment for a hair clipper and this invention is an improvement over the disclosure in my Letters Patent No. 3,208,143, issued September 28, 1965.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a hair cutting guide attachment for ready attachment to a standard type of hair clipper.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hair cutting guide attachment for a hair clipper that is highly efi'icient in operation and in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hair cutting guide attachment that can be installed and operated by unskilled workers.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, in FIG. 1, a manually hand operated hair clipper embodying the invention is shown in use and is designated generally at 10. The hair clipper 10 comprises generally a head structure 12, a hair cutting guide assembly 14 and handles 16 and 17.
The head structure 12 includes a dome-shaped outer metal shell 18, rectangular in plan, with a flat top wall 20, tapered front and rear walls 22 and 24, respectively, and tapered end walls 26, 26 as viewed in FIG. 1. The handle 16 is formed integrally with the rear wall 24 of the shell at one end thereof and extends rearwardly thereof. The handle is formed with a projecting curved lug 28 midway its ends. A flat comb plate 30 closes the open bottom of the shell and is secured thereto by means of threaded post 67 and nut 65. The comb plate has a straight front edge formed with short sharp teeth 32, and has a curved rear edge 34. A cutter plate 36 is reciprocably mounted in the shell and slides over the comb plate 30, the cutter plate having short sharp teeth 38 coacting with the teeth 32 of the comb plate. The flat top wall has a central hole 39.
The other handle 17 is spring-pressed and extends from the other rear end of the shell and has one end swivelly 3,262,200 Patented July 26, 1966 connected to the shell. The handle 17 has a short straight lug 42 midway its ends. The inner swivelled end of the handle 17 is flexibly connected to the cutter plate 36 by a slot and stud connection (not shown). The handles 16 and 17 are substantially parallel and by moving the handle 17 toward the handle 16, the cutter plate 36 will slide sidewise over the comb plate 30.
In accordance with the present invention, a hair cutting guide assembly in the form of an attachment is provided for attachment to the head 12 of the hair clipper for guiding the hair cutting operation. The assembly includes a metal casting 46 having a rectangular shaped flat body 48 with upstanding flanges 50, 50 at the ends thereof. An auxiliary comb plate 52 is riveted along one straight edge 54 to the flat body 48 and its other edge extends laterally of the body and is formed with elongated heavy teeth 56 curved upwardly at their extremities 58. A strap 60 of spring metal is secured in a countersunk recess 62 in the plate 52, the ends 63 of the strap being hooked shaped to clamp the main comb plate 30 to the auxiliary comb plate 52. The outer surfaces of the flanges 50, 50 are formed with vertically disposed grooves 64 intersecting the top and bottom ends thereof. A rectangular shaped guiding plate 66 is positioned underneath the auxiliary comb plate 52 substantially parallel thereto. A pair of upstanding corner guide posts 68, 68, square incross-section, is mounted at the corners along one long edge of the plate, and the side of the posts facing away from .the body of the plate is formed with teeth 70. The posts fit in the vertical grooves 64 in the flange 50 with the teeth facing one of the side edge walls of the groove as indicated at 72. A set screw 57 is mounted in a threaded hole 59 in the flange 50 adjacent the groove 64 therein with its elongated corrugated head 61 overlapping the edge of the groove to prevent accidental displacement of the adjacent post 68.
The hair cutting guide assembly is applied to the clip per 10 by slipping the casting 46 underneath the comb plate 30 of the hair clipper, the body 48 of the casting 46 finally resting underneath the solid portion of the comb plate 30 of the hair clipper, with the teeth 56 of comb plate 60 extending forwardly thereof. The comb plate 30 of the hair clipper is clamped onto the auxiliary comb plate 52 by means of the hooks 63 on the ends of the strap 60.
The guiding plate 66 is adapted to move up and down relative to the auxiliary comb plate 52 for predetermining the length of the hair left after cutting. For this purpose, the flanges 50, 50 are formed with diametrically opposed holes 76, the holes intersecting with one side of the grooves 64. A driving shaft 78, round in cross-section, is journalled in the holes 76. Midway its ends, the shaft is formed with a pair of closely spaced annular grooves and 82. A broad-faced gear 84 is fixed on each end of the shaft 78, which gears fit in the holes 76 in the flanges 50 and mesh with the teeth 70 of the posts 68. The shaft extends through the hole 76 in one of the flanges 50 as indicated at 86. The extension 86 is formed with a slot 88. A cylindrical solid knurled knob 90 is slidably fitted over the extension and is formed with an axial bore 92 to receive the extension and a coil spring 94 interposed between the end of the extension and the base of the bore 92. The knob is formed with opposed passages 98 extending thereacross and intersecting the bore 92. A pin 100 extends across the knob through the passages and bore for holding the knob on the shaft. One end edge of the knob, the inner edge, is formed with a series of recesses 102 in annular formation adapted to selectively receive -a pin 104 extending from the outer surface of the adjacent flange 50 for holding the shaft 78 in adjusted moved position when knob 90 is manually held inward.
The coil spring holds the knob away from the end of extension 86. A set screw 106 extending through a recess 108 in the rear long edge of the body 48 of the casting 46 keeps the shaft from turning and holds the parts in adjusted moved position. A screw 110 extending through a threaded cross passage 112 in the body 48 of the casting 46 is adapted to extend through a passage 114 in the auxiliary comb plate 52 for sliding said comb plate for adjusting its position relative to the head 12 of the clipper 10. The screw has a knurled head 116.
In FIG. 9, a modified form of hair clipper is shown. This clipper 10' differs from clipper 10 in that it is electrically operated from a motor (not shown) in a housing 118, which motor is connected to a source of electric motive force by means of a cord 120 and plug 122. A hair cutting guide assembly 14' is embodied in the clipper which is similar to the guide assembly of FIG. 1 and similar reference numerals with primes added are used to indicate similar parts.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. For use with a hair clipper device having a reciprocating cutter plate and a comb plate, a device for guiding the hair-cutting operation, said latter device including a casting having a rectangular flat body with upstanding flanges at the ends thereof, said flanges having vertically disposed grooves intersecting the top and bottom ends thereof, means on the body for clamping the comb plate thereto, a fixed comb plate supported on said body with its teeth extending laterally thereof, a guiding plate supported by the flanges of the body below the latter comb plate and movable toward and away from the last-named comb plate, means for moving said guiding plate including upstanding spaced posts on the guiding plate fitted in said grooves, said posts having teeth on one side thereof, a rotatable shaft supported between said flanges, an extension on one end of the shaft, gears fixed on the ends of said shaft disposed in the grooves in the flanges meshing with the teeth on the posts, a spring-pressed knob slidably mounted on the extension and operatively connected thereto for turning the shaft, said knob having an axial bore and cross passages intersecting the bore, said extension having an elongated closed slot therein, a pin extending through the passages, bore and slot, a coil spring interposed between the outer end of the extension and the base of the bore for urging the knob outwardly on the extensioin, and means for holding the knob in moved turned position.
2. A device as defined in claim 1 wherein the means for holding the knob in moved turned position includes a pin extending laterally of the opposed surface of the adjacent flange, the body of the knob having a series of spaced recesses in the surface of the end thereof facing the flange adapted to receive the pin.
3. For use with a hair clipper device having a reciprocating cutter plate and a comb plate, a device for guiding the hair-cutting operation, said latter device including a casting having a rectangular flat body with upstanding flanges at the ends thereof, said flanges having vertically disposed grooves intersecting the top and bottom ends thereof, means on the body for clamping the comb plate thereto, an auxiliary fixed comb pla-te supported on said body with its teeth extending laterally thereof, a guiding plate supported by the flanges of the body below the auxiliary plate and movable toward and away from the lastnamed comb plate, means for moving the guiding plate including upstanding spaced posts on the guiding plate fitted in said grooves, said posts having teeth on one side thereof, a rotatable shaft supported between said flanges, gears fixed on the ends of said shaft, disposed in the grooves in the flanges meshing with the teeth on the posts, and means fixed on one end of the shaft for turning the shaft, the body of the casting having a threaded opening leading to the rotatable shaft and with a threaded opening leading to the auxiliary comb plate, the latter comb plate having a threaded opening in the long edge thereof, opposite the edge bearing the teeth, a set screw in the first-named threaded opening in the body of the casting for holding the shaft against rotation and an elongated screw in the second-named threaded opening and in the opening in the auxiliary comb plate for moving said auxiliary comb plate.
