It is an object of the present invention to provide a smokers article, of the character described, which may be more comfortably, neatly and conveniently, and more safely held in a pocket of a garment.

It is also an object of the present invention to provide a smokers article, of the character described, which is ventilated to mix the smoke with fresh air, to cool it and make it more agreeable.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a smokers article, of the character described, which has provision for the regulation of the ventilation to control the amount of fresh air mixing with the smoke, to suit the taste of the individual smoker.

I am aware that smokers articles have been known, some of which have been provided with pocket clips and others of which have been provided with means for intermixing the smoke with fresh air. It is, however, the particular object of the present invention to combine both of these advantageous features, together with additional features of adjustability of the ventilation, in a unitary appendage for the article, that is sturdy, compact and inconspicuous, and may be relatively easily, securely attached to the smokers article.

The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the smokers article of the present invention will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the embodiment thereof, in the form of a tobacco-smoking pipe, which is shown in the accompanying drawings, and from the description following. It is to be understood however, that such embodiment is shown by way of illustration only, to make the principles and practice of the invention more readily comprehensible, and without intent of limiting the invention to the specific details therein shown.

FIG. 1 is a top plan view of a tobacco-smoking pipe embodying the present invention;

FIG. 2 is a fragmentary, longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1;

FIG. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 2.

Referring now with greater particularity, to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the same is shown to comprise a tobaccosmoking pipe, generally designated as 10, including a tobacco-holding bowl, 12, having the tubular stem, 14, provided with a smoke passage, 16 connected with the interior of the bowl 12, in the conventional manner. The pipe may also have the separate mouthpiece or bit, 18. Secured to the stem 14 of the pipe 10, in longitudinal relation thereto is a pocket clip, generally designated as 20, which comprises the elongated shank portion, 22, the nose, 24, and the base portion, 26. The base porton may be provided with depending sides, 28, the ends of which are tapered forming sharp pointed prongs, 30.

The pocket clip 20-is attached to the stem 14 of the pipe 10 with its nose end 24 facing away from the bowl 12 and, in order to provide for the ventilation of the smoke passing through the stem 14, the clip 20 is secured to the stem by an eyelet rivet, 32, having the top flange 34; the eyelet rivet being passed through the opening, 36, formed in the base end 26 of the clip and through a cor- 3,259,137 Patented July 5,1966

responding opening, 38, formed through the wall of the stem 14 and opening into the passageway 16 thereof; the opening 36 being of such size as to have flange 34 overlie its marginal edge portion. The diameter of the eyelet rivet 32 may be such that it will be force-fitted into the opening, 38, to be securely held therein; and, if desired, the inner end of the eyelet rivet 32, may be swaged against the marginal inner edge portion of the opening 38. It will be apparent that as eyelet rivet 32 is forcefitted into the opening 38, the spaced prongs 30 will bite into the wall of the stem 14, to secure the clip 20 against rotation about the rivet as an axis.

Damper means may be provided to regulate the amount of air that may be admitted to the opening of the eyelet rivet, 32, by adjustably regulating the size of the top opening of the rivet. Such regulating means may be carried by the clip, and may be secured on the clip before it is secured to the stem 14. In the illustrated embodiment the regulator may comprise a thin, narrow damper plate or bar, 40, inherently resilient and made from material such as stainless steel, which is slidably mounted on the shank, 22, of the clip by a rivet, 42, which passes through a guiding slot or opening, 44, formed in the shank 22 and extending longitudinally thereof; the rivet 42 is engaged on (the underside of the shank 22 by means of a slightly outwardly arched leaf spring 46, which is disposed and resiliently held by the rivet 42 against the underside of the shank 22 and retained in place against rotation by the dependent shank 22.

The damper 40 may be provided with an end portion 48, adjacent to eyelet rivet 20. The damper may be slightly offset relative to the remainder of its length in a manner to lie flat against the top of the rivet flange 34, and depressed against it when it is moved thereover. It will be apparent that the guide slot 44, will be so arranged and of such length that the damper 40 may be moved a distance to have its end portion 48 disposed completely off the rivet 22 to leave it wholly open, or to completely cover it to seal the opening therethrough or in any position in between, to seal off any desired portion of the eyelet opening and thereby regulate the amount of air admitted therethrough into the stem pas sage 16. It will be apparent that the leaf spring 46, which is slightly arched, will maintain the damper 40 in close frictional relation with the surface of the shank 22, so that, while permitting the sliding of the damper on such surface to any desired adjustable position, it will resiliently maintain the damper in such adjustable position, against inadvertent displacement.

While the invention has been described in connection with a tobacco-smoking pipe in which the stem portion is integral with the bowl, it will be readily apparent that the invention is also adapted for use with pipes on which the stems are non-integral with the bowl, that are insertable by one end into the opening in the bowl provided for the purpose.

This completes the description of the combined clip and adjustable ventilator for a smokers article of the present invention. It will be readily apparent that the clip and damper assembly may be readily formed of few parts that may be readily assembled. It will also be apparent that the clip and damper assembly may be means for the stem of a smokers article, of the present invent-ion, particularly with respect to the ventilation regulating means, by any one skilled in the art, in accordance with. the principle and practice of the invention, hereinabove set forth and without the exercise of any inventive ingenuity. I desire, therefore, the protection of the patent laws for any and all such modifications and variations that may be made within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the claims hereto appended.

What I claim is:

1. A smokers article comprising a tubular stem having a small passageway therethrough and a pocket clip attached to said stem, said pocket clip including a shank portion, a nose at one end of said shank portion and a base at the other end of said shank portion, said clip having an opening at the other end of said shank portion and extending through said clip base portion, a corresponding opening formed in the wall of said tubular stem, and an eyelet rivet passing through said openings, securing said clip to said stem and providing a ventilating opening into the passageway through said stem.

2. The smokers article of claim 1, wherein said clip is formed with depending prongs adjacent said opening in the base thereof, said prongs engaging within the walls of said stem.

3. The smokers article of claim 2 wherein said shank portion .and said base portion are formed with a depending side wall, said prongs forming projections of said side wall.

4. The smokers article of claim 1 wherein means are slidably supported on said clip for movement into adjusted position over the opening in said eyelet rivet to thereby regulate the volume of air passing therethrough.

5. The smokers article of claim 4 wherein the means for regulating the said opening of said eyelet rivet cornprises a damper plate slidably movable over said shank portion and means supporting and guiding said plate in movement on said clip.

6. The smokers article of claim 5 wherein said means supporting and guiding said damper plate on said shank portion comprises means defining a guiding slot formed in said shank portion and extending longitudinally thereof, a second rivet connected to said damper plate, projecting therethrough in spaced relation to the eyelet rivet and covering an end thereof, said second rivet projecting through said guide slot, and an outwardly arched leaf spring connected to the projecting end of said rivet, with its free end resiliently engaged against the underside of said shank portion, and dependent side of walls on said shank portion extending from each edge thereof on each side of said leaf spring.

7. The smokers article of claim 6, wherein the end of said damper plate adjacent said eyelet rivet is arranged to lie flat against the outer edge of said eyelet rivet when disposed thereon.

Claims

1. A SMOKER''S ARTICLE COMPRISING A TUBULAR STEM HAVING A SMALL PASSAGEWAY THERETHROUGH AND A POCKET CLIP ATTACHED TO SAID STEM, SAID POCKET CLIP INCLUDING A SHANK PORTION, A NOSE AT ONE END OF SAID SHANK PORTION AND A BASE AT THE OTHER END OF SAID SHANK PORTION, SAID CLIP HAVING AN OPENING AT THE OTHER END OF SAID SHANK PORTION AND EXTENDING THROUGH SAID CLIP BASE PORTION, A CORRESPONDING OPENING FORMED IN THE WALL OF SAID TUBULAR STEM, AND AN EYELET RIVET PASSING THROUGH SAID OPENINGS, SECURING SAID CLIP TO SAID STEM AND PROVIDING A VENTILATING OPENING INTO THE PASSAGEWAY THROUGH SAID STEM.
