(No Model.)
G. 1). BAILY.
SPEGULUM.
No. 325,647. Patented Sept, 8, 1885.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE D. BAILY, or SPIGELAND, INDIANA.
SPECULUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,647, dated September 8, 1885.
' Application filed June 18, 1885. (No model.)
To aZl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. BAILY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spiceland, in the county of Henry and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speculums; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventi0n,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiiiation.
My invention has for its object certain in1- provcments in vaginal speculums, by which a better action of the wings will be secured than is had in the devices now in use.
To that end it consists in joining the two wings or blades in the novel manner hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the ,claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figures 1 and 2 are side views of my device, showing it respectively in a closed and open position. Fig. 3 is an end view of the device in an opened position. Fig. 4 is a plan view.
A Arcpresent the wings or blades, which are made in the well-known manner and of the usual flaring shape.
For convenience of referencel call that end of the device which is inserted in the vagina the inner end, and the opposite end the outer end. The inner ends are rounded and tapered, as will be understood on reference to the drawings. The outer end of each blade is curved outward, as shown. The end of the blade A. is turned outward buta short distance, and a finger-rest or bearing-plate, B, is secured to it by soldering or otherwise. The outer end of the blade Ais divided or bifureated, as shown at G, and the two portionsD D turned up from the blade, forming fingerrests similar to the finger-rest B. Each of the blades has a flattened portion, E,where their connecting lever'arms are fastened. An operating-lever, F, is rigidly secured to the blade A. This lever F is circular in form, its ends being secured to the blade A near the opposite edges thereof, as shown, and the main or curved portion of the lever forming the handle.
The two blades are connected by two leverarms, G and H, pivotal] y secured to each blade.
The arm G, or outer arm, is shorter than the L arm H, or inner arm. The distance between the two arms at their lower ends is greater than the distance between their upper ends. The arm G has pivoted on it at about its center a rack-lever, I, which is engaged by a hook or catch, J, pivoted on the operatinglever F.
In the operation of my device the thumb is placed on the operatinglever and theinstrument'grasped by placing the fingers upon the blades behind the finger-rests. By pressing downward upon the lever F with the thumb the blades will be swung apart and theinstrrr ment opened. As the lever Fswings down. the hook or catch J will engage the books on the rack-lever I and hold the instrument in any desired position.
By the arrangement and relative size of the arms G H the outer end of the upper blade will be raised in anearly vertical line instead of the are of a circle, as is the case in theinstruments now in use.
My device is used in substantially the same way as other instruments of the same class, and the manner of using need not be de scribed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-- 1. In a speculum, the combination, with the blades, of two lever-arms of diflerentlengths, pivotally secured to the blades, whereby the upper blade is raised in a nearly perpendicular line, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, in a speculum, of the blades, with the connecting-arms, the racklever pivoted on one of the connecting-arms, the operating lever secured to one of the blades, and the hook pivoted upon the operating-lever and engaging the rack-lever, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE D. RAILY.
Witnesses:
HENRY W. CHARLES, WILLIAM H. DICKINSON.
