JERSEY CITY, NEYV JERSEY.
HYDRCCARBON-BURNER.
Application lled July 15, 1385.
TFIlaTON 'oilfiing part of Letters Patent NO. 325,617, dated September 1, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE MACHLET, of Elizabeth, in the county ol' Union and State of New Jersey, have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved hydrocarbon burner for metallurgical and other furnaces by which a perfect combustion and a high degree of heat are produced, so that it works in a quicker and more economical manner than the gas-burners heretofore employed for jewelers and other furnaces.
The invention consists of a hydrocarbonbnrner for furnaces, which is provided with a steam-supcrhcating coil located in the nozzle of the burner, a vapor-conducting tube leading to said nozzle, an injector connected to the superheatcr, a supply-pipe for the volatile hydrocarbon oil, a mixing-chamber, an evaporating steam-coil insaid mixing-chamber, and a trough below said eVaporating-coil.
The invention consists, further, of certain details of construction and combination of parts, which will be described more fully hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved hydrocarbon -lourner7 shown as applied to a metallurgical furnace. Fig. 2 is an cud elevation of the mixing-chamber, showing thc cvaporating-coil und its trough.
Similar letters ol' reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings reprcscntsa metallurgical or other furnace, and B a metallic nozzle or throat, that communicates with the interiorof the furnace. ln the nozzle or throat B is located a steam superhcating coil, C, to which the steam is supplied at the upper end by a steanrpipe, C'. The supcrhcater C is connected at the lower end by a pipe, C?, to an injector, D, that is located axially in line with a mixing chamber, F. The mixing-chamber E is contracted in front of the injector D, and
connected by a bent tube, E, with the nozzle B. The eduction-pipe C'z of the superheater C is also connected with a steam-coil, F, that is located in the mixing-chamber E, back of the injector D, said coil serving to evaporate the hydrocarbon oil that is supplied by a pipe, f. The diameter ot' the pipe forming the evaporation-coil F is made smaller than lthe diameter of the pipe leading to the injector D, so that the steam passes with greater force through the injector than through the coil F. The opposite end of the cvaporating-coil F is open and discharges the steam and water ot' condensation formed in the coil into the atmosphere. A trough or drip-pan, f', is arranged below the coil F at the lower part of the mixing-chamber E, said drip-pan collecting the oil not vaporized by contact with the coil, so as to evaporate by the radiant heat of the coil. i
The injector draws atmospheric air into the mixing-chamber E, and forces the same, together with the hydrocarbon vapors and the superheat-ed steam emitted by the injector through the tube E and nozzle B, into the furnace, where the combustion of the gas, air, and steam mixture takes place. rlhe heat produced by the combustion causes thedissociation of the superheated steam into its component elements, so that a perfect and rapid combustion of the fuel and a high temperature are produced iu the furnace.
The bent connecting-tube E is provided, at its bottom portion, with an opening, g, closed by a thin plate, g', oi brass or other suitable metal, which is retained by a collar, g2, attached to the tube E'. The plate g serves for the purpose ol' furnishing an outlct for the molten metal in the furnace in case the cruciblc containing the same should break. The mixing-chamber, injector, and evaporatingcoil are thereby protected against destruction by the molten metal in case of accident.
Having thus described my invention, Ici-Jini as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A hydrocarbou-burner for metallurgical and other furnaces, consisting of an cduction nozzle or throat, a stcam-superheating coil located in said nozzle, a mixing-chamber, a tube connecting said mixing-chamber and nozzle, an injector connected to the supcrheater.` an eva-porating-coil also connected to the superhcating-coil, and a. tube for supplying hydrocarbon oil to the evaporating-coil, substantially as set forth.
heater, a mixing-chamber surrounding the injector and evaporator, a bent tube connecting the mixing-chamber and nozzle, said tube having a bottom opening closed by a sheetlnetal plate, a hydrocarbon snpply-ppe terminatngin the evaporatingeoil, and a trough 0r drip-pan below the same, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE MACHLET. XVitnesses:
PAUL GOEPEL, SIDNEY MANN.
