SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,573, dated September 1, 1885.

.To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES SNYDER, of Fair Mount, in the county of Onondaga in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holdbacks for Harness, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention consists of a metallic holdbaclz for harness, which holdback is easily adjusted in length, readily connected to the harness, and is perfectly secure and stronger and more durable than the ordinary leather straps heretofore used for that purpose.

rIhe invention is fully illustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein Figure I shows my improved metallic holdback in its connection with the thills and harness. Fig. II is a detached enlarged side view of the holdback, and Fig. III is a top view of the same.'

a and a represent two metallic straps provided, respectively, with a series of perforations, b b, distributed over the lengths of the straps. Said straps are spliced together adjustably lengthwise by a T-shaped lug, c, attached to the splicing end of the strap ct, and standing transversely thereon. By turning said strap to a right angle from the other strap, (L, the lug c is adapted to enter one of the perforations b of the latter strap, and protrude with its head through the same. In swinging the strap a baci; into line with the other strap, the head of the T-lug c locks the straps together. A clamping-screw, s, passing through one ofthe perforations b ofthe strap a, and engaging a screwthreaded eye, f, on the strap a, serves to retain the straps in line with each other.

l. A holdback for harness composed of metallic straps spliced together ad j ustably length wise, as set forth.

2. The combination of the metallic strap a, provided with perforations b b, the metallic strap c', provided with the T-lug c, and the clamping-screw s, substantially as described and shown.

3. In combination with the metallic strap a, the metallic strap a', spliced adjust-ably on the strap c, and the snap-hook d, formed integral with the end of the strap a', substantially as described and shown.

4. In combination with the breeching of the harness and the hook or staple t on the thills, the metallic strap a, provided with the eye e, the metallic strap a', spliced adjustably on the strap a, and the snap-hook d on the end of the strap a', substantially as described and shown.
