MORGAN E. LASHEP, OF UHAMPAIGN, lLLlNOIS.
HAME-Tue.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,797, dated December 26, 1882,
Application filed November 24, 1682. (X model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORGAN E. LASHER,
of Ohampaign, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hams-Tags; and 1 do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of thisspecilication, in which- Figure 1 is an outside view of the locking device for the tug secured to the end of a trace. Fig. 2 is a view of the inner side of Fig. 1. Fig. 3isaview of-the outer side ofmyimprovedheme-tug, havingfour links connected together and attached at one loop-buckle guard and at the other end to a coupling-piece for the attaching hame-strap. Fig. 4. is a view of the inner side of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section taken centrally through the heme-tug and trace, showing these parts connected together. Fig. 6 is a perspective view in detail, showing the pintle end of one of the links.
This invention relates to metallic flexible hame-tugs; and the nature of my invention consists mainly in a metallic hame-tug which is composed of detachable links adapted to have attached to them in a secure manner a trace, and which can be readily separated or united for the purpose of shortening or lengthening the tug to adaptit to horses of different sizes; also, in a trace-fastening which is of a peculiar construction and which is so constructedthat it can be readily attached in a secure manner to any one of thelinks composing the flexible metallic tug; also, in'a novel construction of the links and link-couplings constituting the hame-tug, all of which will be fully understood from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings:
A designates my improved flexible hametug, which is composed of metal links D, and provided on one end with a guard looped buckle consisting of a body, B, and loops B B B and also a coupling-hook, b, by which it can be hinged to the pintlec of any one of the links D. The opposite or front end of the flexible tug A will be provided with a clip for attaching it to the well-known Dame-ring,
which clip is secured to a flanged plate, F, at
tached by a hinge-join t, b c, to the front link D of the tug. The tug may be composed of any desired number of'links D, and each one of these links, like the clip-plate Fand buckle B, is made of metal, preferably of cast malleableiron, although the said parts may be of any other metal. Each link D is preferably of an oblong rectangular form, as shown in the drawings, and constructed with an elliptical hole, a, through its body, which is surrounded on one side (the inner side) of the link by a rectangular recess, 0, (shown in FigsA and 5,) and on the outside by an elevation. One end of each link is constructed with a transverse pintle, c, terminating at one end in a contracted entering portion, f, and the opposite end of the link is formed into a coupling-hook, b. By means of the pintles c and the hooks I) the links can be coupled together by holding them at or nearly at right angles to each other and inserting the pintles edgewise into the hooks, the contractionsf allowing this to be done, after which the links are adjusted into line with each othcr, which renderstheirhinged couplings safe and secure. The links can be uncoupled only when they are adjusted at or nearlyat right angles to each other and sliding them apart by an edgewise movement. Itwill thus be seen that I am able to detach the links and to quickly shorten, or, when desired, add other links and lengthen the tug at pleasure. It will also he observed that the tug is flexible laterally, but rigid in the opposite direction.
0 designates the leather trace, which has an oblong slotted frame, J, suitably secured to one end, and between the bifurcated ends of this frame is hinged at j, a locking-lever, G, which is constructed with a curved locking tongue, 9, a shoulder, t, and a curved portion, 9. (Shown clearlyin Fig. 5.) On the inner side of the frame J is formed a lug, J, having a hookingend,h,which is allowed to pass freely through the hole a in anyof the links andwhen drawn backward will engage with such link, as shown in Fig. 5. The tongue g is then forced into its place through the frame J and hole a, and the trace is securely attached to the link. It will be seen by reference to Fig. 5 that when the lever G and its tongue are in a locking position the rear end of the curved lever G drops forward of a guard, a, formed on the frame J, which guard will prevent a casual displacement of the said lever by preventing its free end from being struck by any object. It will be seen from the above description that I can shorten or lengthen the trace by engaging its fastening device with ditt'erent links composing the tu Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A hame-tug consisting of a. series of detachable metal links provided with end attaching devices, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially as set forth.
2. Thecombination of the detachablehinged sections or links D with the looped buckle 1-3 and the hinged plate F, constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
3. Fora hame-tng', anuinber ot' hinged metal links, each link having a perforation, a, and recess a, a pintle, c, and a hook, I), constructed and adapted to operate substantially as de' scribed.
4. The combination, with a trace, of the frame J, its hooked lug J, the hinged locking devices G g,.and perforated name-tug sections D, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
5. The combination, with a hame-tug composed of detachable flexible metal sections, of a hooked trace-fastener and a locking device therefor, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
6. The guard '12, on the frame J, in combination with the hinged lever G. locking-tongue g, and hooked lug J, substantially as described.
In testimony that. I claim the foregoing as my own I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MORGAN 1 LASHE l1.
