SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,530, dated September 1, 1885.
Applicaiion filed April 20, 1&85.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RUSSELL L. Gone, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Carlisle, in the county of Nicholas and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full ,clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view of my improved churn. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the dasher detached from the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing in perspective the several parts of the dasher separated or detached from each other; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line at w in Fig. 1, with the ends of the dashcr shown in horizontal section.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to that class of churns which are known as rotary churns, or which are provided with a revolving dasher and with means or mechanism for operating the same. The invention has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
With these ends in view it consists especially in the improved construction of the dasher and of other component parts, as will be hereinafter fully described,and particularlypointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designatcs a suitablyconstructed box or receptacle, which may be rectangular or of any other suitable shape, and which forms the creamvessel of my improved churn. The said box is provided with detachable half-covers B B, the inner or adjoining edges of which are provided with suitable bearings for adetachable shaft, 0, the construction of which will be hereinafter more fully described. One of the said half'covers, B, is provided with a suitably-constructed upward-extending bracket,D, having a bearing for a transverse shaft, E, carryinga gear-wheel, F, having a handle, G,

by means of which it may be conveniently manipulated. The said bracket D is also constructed with a downwardly extending pintle, H, forming abearing for the upper end of the dasher stem or shaft C, as will behereinafter more fully set forth.
The shaft or stem G of the dasher consists of a tubular cylindrical stem provided at or near its upper end with vertical slots or openings I I for the admission of air, and with a ring or collar,J, having a laterally-extending vertical flange or groove, K, for the reception of a key or feather, L, formed upon one side of a detachable plug, M, adapted to be seated in the upper end of the said tube, and retained in position by means of the said feather. The upper end of the said plug is formed or provided with a pinion, N, adapted to engage the gear-wheelF, as shown in the drawings.
0 designates the dasher proper, which consists of a vertical tubular portion, 1?, adapted to be fitted upon the lower end of the dasherstaff 0, and provided at its lower end with a transverse tubular brace, Q, which is elliptical in cross-section, with sharp edges, and provided with open diagonal ends R R. The said tube 1? is connected to the brace Q in such a manner as to admit of the passage of air from the one to and through the other, and the under side of the tubular brace Q is provided with a centrally-located pintle or pivot pin, for which a bearing is formed in the bottom of the box or receptacle A, as shown.
Suitably-constructed wings or heaters RR, which may be formed of wire or of any other suitable material, connect the tube 1? with the transverse brace Q, as will be seen in the drawings. The construction of these boaters may be changed or modified to any desired extent without departing from the spirit of my invention.
The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. When the dasher is revolved, which is done by means of the gear-wheel upon the churn-cover, the air will enter the upper end of the dashcr-staff through the slots formed therein, and, descending through the said hollow or tubular staff, will be emitted with considerable force through the tubular brace at the lower end of the said staff and into the empty space or vacuum formed centrally in the body of cream by the revolu tion of the dasher.
By the general construction herein described the operation of churning is greatly accelerated and facilitated, and the butter product is gathered toward the center of the churn, and is, therefore, more easily removed from the churn.
The dasher and its attachments may be easily and quickly removed from the churn and separated from each other, and each of the tubular parts may be readily cleaned simply by passing a Wet cloth through the part. Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent v of the United States- Ina rotary churn, the combination with a box or casing, of a vertical revolving tubular stem or shaft, aplug inserted detachably in the upper end of the latter and having apinion, a tube adjusted upon the lower end of said stem and having a transverse tubular brace and suitable wings or dashers, and suitable bearings and operating mechanism for the said stem or shaft, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
