UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. TAYLOR AND OHASTAIN H. TAYLOR, OF ASHLAND, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT INCHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,828, dated February 22, 1876; application filed December 31,1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES W. TAYLOR and GHAsTArN H. TAYLOR, of Ashland, in the county of Hanover and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full and'exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of our improved churn, a portion of the body being broken away to reveal the interior; and Fig. 2 is a central yertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference in the accompanying drawings denote the same parts.
Our invention relates to that class of churns in which an oscillating dasher is employed to agitate the cream; and has for its object to improve their construction in such manner as to facilitate the churning process and to cheapen the cost of manufacture. To these ends it consists in certain details of construction, which I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawings, A represents the body of the churn, formed, preferably, of wood, and having vertical sides and inclined ends, as shown, and B is the handle or dash-rod, ex tending through a slot, 8, in the cover 0, being pivoted on a rod, R, having its hearings in ears E E, formed by a continuation of the sides of the churn. The lower end of the handle, within the body of the churn, is provided with a flat perforated dasher, D, and above. the dasher, at right angles thereto, is located a cream-guard, G, consisting of a root angular piece of wood, secured to the dashrod, and accurately fitting the sides of the churn, but wide enough to allOW considerable play to the dasher.
As the dasheris operated the cream is forced against the ends of the churn but is prevented from fiyin g upward by the guard G, and thus all liability of the cream being thrown out at the top of the churn is prevented, while the G removing the cover, as will be readily understood.
We are aware that cream-guards have here.
tofore been arranged on the staff of an oscillating churn, within the body of the churn, immediately beneath the cover, for the purpose of preventing the escape of cream, and we therefore lay no claim tosuch invention.
By our construction the cream-guard not only prevents escape of cream, but also facilitates the process of churning by affording a surface against which the cream is forced at each oscillation of the dasher.
We claim as our invention The cream-guard G, located on the handle B above, and at right angles to, the oscillatin g (lasher D, and acting as a surface against which the cream is dashed, in combination with the churn-body A and dasher .D, substantially as described.
