PETERS. Phommhngnpmr. wimingbm D c UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
THOMAS CHARLES SAR-GEANT, OF CHURCH STOWE, VEEDON, COUNTY OF NORTHAMPTON, ENGLAND.
PLOW-COLTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,451, dated September l 1885.
Applicaticn filed February 4, i985. (No model.) Patented in England November 1-2, 1884, No. 14,900;
To @ZZ whomit may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS CHARLES, SAR- GEANT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Church Stowe, VVeedon, in the county of Northampton, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plow- Colters, (for which I have obtained provisional protection in Great Britain, dated November 12,1884, No. 14,900,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of plow-colters; and it consists, first, in making a plow-colter in two parts, in lieu of one, as heretofore-that is to say, the blade or cutting part is made sepa ratefrom its stem, the two parts being secured together, as hereinafter more particularly described, and, secondly, in forming the blade of a plow-colter with a double cutting-edge, in lieu of one, as at present.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side sectional elevation ot' my improved plow-eolter; Fig. 2, a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a. front view, thereof. Fig. 4 is a section through the blade on line l 2 in Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a side elevation of an ordinary plow-eolter, and Fig. 6 a section through its blade on line 3 4 in Fig. 5.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the respective figures.
A, Figs. l to 4, represents the blade or out ting part of my improved colter, the blade A being made separate from its stern B. For securing the two parts A and B together, I may form the blade A at its upper end or hilt with a boss or enlargement, which is reduced and tapered down so as to leave a shoulder, m', next the blade. rIhe tapered portion or hilt of the latter is inserted into the lower enlarged end of the stem B, which bears against 4o the shoulder x of the blade A, and is secured thereat to the latter by one or more set-screws,
y, as shown; or the blade A and its stem B may be held together by keys, bolts, and anges, screws, shrunk rings, or otherwise, as may be found most suitable.
I form the blade A of a ploweolter with a double cutting-edge, (see Fig. 4,) so that when one edge is dulled by wear the blade A can be turned round and its second cutting-edge 5o brought into play.
A greatadvantage of my invention is, that when the blade A is worn out up to its hilt or shoulder x the stump or blade=top can be detached from its stein Band a new blade snbstituted.
I claim as my invention- In a. plow-colter, the stem B, provided with a socket and fastening, combined with the blade A, having a double cutting-edge and 6o hilt, substantially as described, whereby said blade may be caused to present either edge forward without shifting its place as to the plow-beam, Ste. v
