COMBINATION-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part o Letters Patent No. 325,321, dated September 1, 1885.

The invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation of our new and improved combination-lock. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the lock, the back plate, G, being removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the lock taken on line ac a: of Fig. 2. Figs. L and 5 show the form of the sliding tumblers. Figs. 6 and 7 show the divisionplates for the tumblers, and Fig. 8 shows the plate for operating the sliding tuinblers and the bolt of the lock.

which meshes with the teeth c, formed at one edge of the operating-plate E, so that by turning the disk F the pinion b will cause the plate E to be moved backward or forward in the box A. Upon its inside the box A is formed with the lugs d d, which serve, in connection with one of the outer walls of the box, to keep the sliding tnmhlers C C and the division-plates D and operating-plate E in place. ners of the plate and entering screw-threaded recesses made in the lugs, the other end of the back plate, G, being held by a single screw, passing through the plate and entering the screwthreaded opening e. The lug d" serves as a stop or lock for the .bolt B to prevent it from backward movement when it is shoved forward and outward to a locked position`(the position shown in Fig. 3) by the sliding plate E. The lugs c e are formed a short distance from the outer end wall, a, of the box A, so as to form the space f, which receives the sta-- ple J, so that the staple, when the lock is applied to it, will be entirely inclosed by the lock-box A. The lugs c c also serve as guides to the forward end of the bolt B in its backward and forward movement, as will be understood from Fig. 2.
The bolt B in this instance is formed with the lug g, and by the action of the spring le, placed in a recess, h', made in the back of said bolt, so as to act against the side wall, a2, of the box A, the lug g will be constantly held pressed against the edges of the sliding tuniblers and the edge of the operating-plate E.
rlhe operating-plate E is provided with the pin i, and is formed with the notch j, the pin being for the purpose of sliding the tmnblers G C, and the notch for receiving the lug g of the bolt B, for sliding the said bolt. The notchj is inclined at one end, as shown at k, for shifting the lug g of the bolt E out of the notch j, and for bringing the rear end of the bolt B in line with the lug d', as hereinafter described.
The division-plates D are for the purpose of separating the tumblers C O from each other, and for separating the lower tumbler, G, from the operating-plate E, so that this plate and the tumblers may slide independently of each other, except as the tumblers are moved by the pin t' of the plate E.
The division-plates D may be of any suitable form, and duplicates of each other. ln this instance they are each cut away at Z to form a clearance for the pin i, and at Z', so as not to interfere with the movement of the lug g of the bolt B, and they are each cut away to form the shoulders Z2, which. embrace the lugs d., as shown in Fig. 2, so that they cannot move out of place.

The sliding tumbler C is made of a rectangular piece of sheet metal, notched at m, to receive the lug g, and again at m, to form the shoulders m2, against which the pin i is adapted to strike for moving the tumbler longitudi-` nally. The notch m is made out of line with the center ofthe tumbler C, so that by reversing the tumbler in the lock *box A-that is, by turning it end for end and inverting it-the combination of the lock will be changed.
rlhe tumbler C is like the tumbler C, being cut away at a, and also cut away at its side edges at a', except that these notches are arranged differently with reference to the transverse center of the tumbler-that is, they are made on the opposite side of said center-.so that by interchanging the tumbler C with the tumbler C the combination will be changed, and so also by reversing this tumbler end for end (the tumbler C remaining the same) the combination will be changed.
The outer surface of the diskF is graduated, as shown at o, Fig. l, andV the'box A has the index-mark o formed upon it for indicating the combination of the lock.
Beneath the back plate, G, is placed the flat curved spring p, which bears upon the upper tumbler, C, and serves to hold the tumblers and the division-plates in place in the box A.
The bolt B being shoved forward to locked position-the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3-in order to withdraw the bolt the tumblers C C must be moved so that the notches m a in the edges of the tumblers toward the bolt B will stand exactly in line with the lug g of the bolt B, and the plate E must be moved to such position that the notch j thereof will also stand in line with the said lug g. The tumblers and plate G being in this position, the spring h will act to force the bolt B to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the lug g of the bolt entering the notches m, fn, and j, and this movement of the bolt B, caused by the spring h, is sufficient to carry the rear end of the bolt B out of line with the stud d', so that by simply turning disk F by the knob f thereof1 the notch j in the operating-plate E, acting against lhe stud r/,will slide the bolt B backward and withdraw it from the staple J.
To force the bolt B forward again to lock it with the staple J, it is only necessary to turn the disk F in the opposite direction, which will cause the beveled end Ic of the notch j, acting against the lug g, to move the bolt B longitudinallytoward the staple J until the rear endv of the bolt passes the stud d', whereupon the bevel 7c, acting as a cam, will move the bolt B outward, so that its rear end will stand in front of the lug d', as shown in full lines in Fig. 2. The bolt B being thus moved c outward by the bevel 7c, the operating-plate the plate E all abreast of the lug gof the bolt B, which will hold the bolt B in line with the lug d', so that the bolt B cannot in any manner be withdrawn until the notches m, n, and j are all brought again in line with each other and with the lug g of the bolt. Y
In order to bring the notches m, a, and j into line with each other and with lug g, the disk F must be turned to right and left with a regular combination of movements, and this combination must be known so that with the aid of the graduation-marks o and the index o the exact required movements of the disk F may be effected.
In order to learn the combination necessary to operate the lock, the back plate, G, must be removed, and the movement of the tumblers C C and plate E observed. To ascertain the combination (the plate G being removed) the disk F will first be turned to move the plate E as far in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3 as it will go. Then the disk F must be turned in the opposite direction until the tumbler C is moved by pin t', so
that the notch m stands just in line with the lug g of the bolt B, the position of the index o on the graduation o being carefully noted.
vThe disk F will then again be reversed or turned in the opposite direction until the notch of the tumbler C' is moved by the pin t' so that the notch n stands exactly in line with the lug g, the position of the index o being again carefully noted, as before. Then, nally, the disk F will be again reversed and turned until the notch 7' of the operatingplate E stands exactly in line with the lug g, noting as before the position of the index o. In this position the spring h-will force the bolt B forward, as above stated, the lug g entering the notches m n j.
As above stated, by changing the tumblers G C the combination will be changed so that with each change of the tumblers the ,above method must be pursued to learn the combination, which must be strictly followed to open the lock. The combination may also be changed by moving the pin t to different positions in the holes z" in the `plate E, thus enabling an indefinite number of changes of combination to be made.
XVe do not confine ourselves to the use of two sliding tumblers, as any suitable number might be used, greatly complicating Vthe lock; nor do we confine ourselves to the hasp77 form of lock shown, as the principle of the lock is applicable to locks of various forms, t) be used for various purposes.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim asnew, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
